Standards:
English language learners communicate for social and instructional purposes within the
school setting.
Materials:
White Copy Paper
Copy Machine or Printer

Objective:
Families will attend Literacy Night to learn how to encourage and support literacy in
their homes on a daily basis.
Families will make take-home literacy activities to bolster literacy skills at home.
Procedure:
Print the Sign-in Sheet for Literacy Night. The Sign-in Sheet can be found in the
Additional Resources on pages 107-108.
Print the parent questionnaire/survey for the end of the event. The parent
Questionnaire/Survey can be found in the Additional Resources on page 109.

Procedure Continued:
Print out the location cards, one set for each family.
o Use card stock or construction paper for durability.
Print out the Verbs Galore response sheet double-sided so families can play
more than once.
Provide an envelope and paperclips to hold all of the cards together.
Model Game:
o Demonstrate how to cut out the location and response cards.
o Model that the location cards get shuffled and placed face down in the
center of the table.
o One player flips over one location card and a timer is set for two minutes.
o Each player uses a response list card to write down verbs (action words)
that happen or are associated with that location.
o The object of the game is to try to write as many verbs (action words) as
possible about the location in two minutes.
o At the end of the two minutes, players compare their lists of verbs and
cross off verbs they wrote that match one another.
o The player with the most verbs left on their list is the winner.
Provide each family with an envelope labeled Verbs Galore to keep the location
and response cards.
Ask parents to complete a Parent Questionnaire/Survey at the end of the Literacy
Night event.

Maintain a Parent Sign-In sheet for your records.
Give the Parent Exit Survey and reflect on the parent feedback.
Maintain the Parent Exit Surveys for your records and to make improvements if
necessary for future events.

Family Directions:
Cut out the location cards.
Take three-four response sheets.
Take an envelope or paperclip to hold your materials together.
To Play:
o Shuffle the Location Cards and place them face down in the
middle.
o Each player takes a response sheet three-four players can
play.
o Flip over one location card and set a timer or watch the
clock for two minutes.
o Each player writes down as many verbs about the location as
possible in the two minutes. Dont show each other your
responses during the two minutes.
o When the time is up, compare your responses.
o Each player crosses off verbs that match other players.
o The player that has the most verbs left on their response
sheet is the winner.
