the Van Wert Recycle Center.
Cardboard, magazines and
plastic shopping bags also
need to be separated. All tin,
plastic and glass contain-
ers need to be rinsed clean.
Labels can be left on items
and they can be co-mingled.
No window or plate
glass, light bulbs, orna-
mental, Pyrex or cookware
glass will be accepted.
Computers, etc., are
also accepted but no
monitors or TVs.
Stadium work

a.m. at the football stadium.

power-washing the stadium,

softball tournaments in
July and a baseball event.
The first softball tourney
is a girls 8 & under coach-
pitch all-star tournament
on July 16-18. All play-

The second is a girls
12 & under fast-pitch soft-
ball all-star tournament
on July 23-25. All play-
ers must be 12 or under as
of December 31, 2009.
The association is also
hosting a boys 8 & under
coach-pitch all-star tour-
nament on July 9-11. All
players must be 8 or under
as of April 30, 2010.

available for the double-
elimination tournaments,
which will take place at the

Officials say Ohios job mar-
ket improved in May as unem-
ployment fell to 10.7 percent
from 10.9 percent in April.
The Department of Job and
Family Services says manu-
facturers were hiring while
employment in services was
boosted by temporary census
jobs.
The report was released
Friday ahead of a visit to
Columbus by President
Barack Obama to tout job cre-
ation from last years stimu-
lus act. Department spokes-
man Ben Johnson says Ohio
added 1,700 construction jobs
in May and says the stimulus
played a role in that, though
the state doesnt know exactly
how many of those jobs were
stimulus-related.
Ohios overall employ-
ment outside of farms grew
by 17,100 jobs in May. The
number of unemployed work-
ers dropped to 641,000, from
652,000 in April.

Authorities in Ohio used
strawberry shortcake as bait
to capture a roaming black
bear in a busy suburb near
Youngstown.
Boardman police say the
bear was rummaging through
the community for two days.
It was captured Thursday in
a cage containing the sweet
treat.
Wildlife officials said the
bear would be released into
a rural area of Ashtabula or
Trumbull counties north of
Youngstown.
One woman says she

to boost Medicaid costs
COLUMBUS (AP) An
expansion of Medicaid thats
part of the Obama health care
law will boost the programs
cost to Ohio taxpayers by
$1.45 billion over five years,
according to projections pro-
vided to a newspaper by the
administration of Democratic
Gov. Ted Strickland.
Republicans say the state
already is struggling to afford
Medicaid coverage for the
poor and disabled and won-
der how it can afford to pay
more.
Under President Barack
Obamas health care over-
haul, states will be required
to widen Medicaid eligibility
in 2014 so that the program
covers people with incomes
up to 133 percent of the fed-
eral poverty level, or about
$29,327 a year for a family of
four. Also, coverage will be
extended to childless adults
for the first time. Ohio offi-
cials have estimated that the
expansion will add 554,000
people to the states Medicaid
rolls.

to The Columbus Dispatch
on Thursday, and to The
Associated Press on Friday,
show that during the first
five years the broadening of
Medicaid will cost the state
annual amounts ranging from
$136 million to about $333

pick up $16.9 billion in addi-
tional Ohio Medicaid costs
over a six-year period begin-

Why I Relay

When I first heard that
Delphos was having the
Relay for Life 8 years ago, I
was elated. I had been a vol-
unteer at the Lima Relay for
several years, selling lumi-
naries and T-shirts, but I had
never been on a team. I saw
how much fun the teams
were having setting up
tents, bringing all kind of
snacks, playing games, stay-
ing up all night, walking,
etc., but I was not really a
part of it. I remember being
so touched by the survivor
walk and the luminary cer-
emony. But it was all from
a distance.
So now Delphos was
having its own Relay and
I could be on a team. As
it turned out, I could have
been on 3 teams. My church
was having a team, my co-
workers were having a
team, and my best friends
were having a team. I chose
to be on my friends team
because there were fewer of
us. That first year Delphos
exceeded all expectations.
It was so magical. And I
got to experience it being a
part of a team with a tent,
snacks, and staying up all
night with my friends and
other walkers.

I have been in every relay
since, but I dont walk just
to be a part of a team any-
more I walk because like
so many people, cancer has
affected me in a personal
way by taking the lives of
several people I was very
close to.
Three years ago, I
watched my nephew strug-
gle with and die of colon
cancer at the age of 40. He
was 5 months old when I
traveled to Spain to see him
for the first time and it was
love at first sight. When my
own children came along,
he was like a big brother to
them, very sharing and lov-
ing. To watch what cancer
did to him and to my sister,
his mother (the stress caused
her to have a heart attack),
was almost unbearable. Now
I walk in memory of him.
When Im on the track in the
wee hours of the morning, I
think of him and all the joy
he brought me.
Just in the past six
months, cancer raised its
ugly head again and took
the life of one of my very
good friends. In fact, she
was the captain of my very
first relay team. She was
diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer last fall. I watched
her lose weight because she

As Fathers Day
approaches of course Im
thinking about my father
long time gone for 14 years
of my life. Although I must
admit with a busy life of
watching our own five chil-
dren and now 10 grandchil-
dren, I dont think of my
Dad as much as I use to.
There are times when I
see other men my age talk-
ing to their dad or helping
their dad that I miss him.
We talked a lot, argued a
lot but I guess that is what
fathers are for, they lived
the life we are about to and
they only want it better for
us. As I remember my dad,
he was a hard-working, ear-
ly-hour riser who wanted to
get his work started before
it got hot. You see, my dad
was a garbage man and back
in the 40s, 50s and into the
60s, garbage men had to
work much more than they
do now, with all the power
equipment these trucks have
now.
Dad had to drive down
alleys, go into people
garages, basements and

couldnt eat and eventually
get so weak she couldnt
walk by herself. One night
I got a phone call. In a
raspy voice, she asked if I
would be a pallbearer at her
funeral. I told her I would
be honored, and I was; but
let me tell you, it is a ques-
tion I hope I never get asked
again!
How can I describe
MaryAnn? A little bit Irish
leprechaun and a little bit
English bulldog. A little bit
of a person with a whole lot
of heart. She had the most
infectious laugh and a smile
that would grab you and
pull you in. She had a fierce
loyalty and was a champion
of the underdog. She was
the nurse who worked with
patients and took pride in
making their visits as com-
fortable as possible. She was
the wife, mother and grand-
mother who loved her family
as only a wife, mother and
grandmother can. She was
the sister that her siblings
looked up to and admired.
But for me, she was one of
the sweetest, kindest per-
sons I ever met and I am
a better person for having
known her.
So this year, when I walk,
I will walk in memory of
MaryAnn.
sometimes house to pick up
garbage. Trash cans were
heavy, stinking, sometimes
filled with rats, cats and if
garbage sits long enough
in the heat you can imagine
what kind of bugs are crawl-
ing through it. If containers
were too heavy or too full to
move, he would dump it in
to a smaller tub and make
two or even three trip to the
truck to empty the can.
As our family grew and
expenses accordingly, dad
need to broaden his business
so he started to collect tin,
iron, brass, cardboard, rags
and newspapers, holding
these items cleaning them
(separate them) and when
he had enough for a load to
take to the mills, he would
load these materials on the
truck and deliver them. Still
this was not enough to sup-
port a family of seven.
Twice in my fathers life,
he started a taxi service to
earn and extra income so
when he got off the gar-
bage route (working from
5 a.m. to 1 p.m.). He would
shower shave and drive taxi
to the late evening hours. As

I would like to remind
the citizens of Delphos of
some important city ordi-
nances that are vital to know
for the summer months. We
have received complaints
that would fall under these
ordinances. The job of keep-
ing our city clean and safe
is much easier when we all
work together.
Minors curfew
Ord. 557.01
This ordinance was set up
to protect our young people
and their parents. The hours
have been set as a means
to be sure our youth are in
their homes or other safe
place at a reasonable hour.
It also helps parents to know
where their children are. For
those under 14 of age, the
curfew hours are between
the hours of 10:30 p.m. and
6 a.m. Curfew for minors 14
years old and under 18 are
between the hours of 11 p.m.
and 6 a.m. Sundays through
Thursdays and midnight
and 6 a.m. on Fridays and
Saturdays.
Dogs and other animals
running at large

This ordinance was set
up to keep dogs under the
control of their owners.
Residents should not have
to worry about their chil-
dren or themselves being bit
by a dog running loose in
the neighborhood or caus-
ing an accident on the road.
All dogs should be confined
to the owners yard or on a
leash.

ordinance was passed.

up messes in your yard, and
you dont even own a dog,
you want laws like this. If
your dog defecates in anoth-
er persons yard, you need to
show common courtesy and
respect by cleaning it up.

one will rake, push, or blow
any kind of debris into the
streets. When leaves, grass
clippings or other debris
are placed in the streets,
it can fill the catch basins
and cause flooding when it
rains and presents a hazard
for drivers. Lawns must be
groomed and are not to be
over 10 inches tall. Weeds
are to be controlled.

No one taking care of
land in Delphos shall let
weeds, grasses or undesir-
able vegetation grow to a
height of more than ten inch-
es. We should take pride in
our properties and take care
of them. The City should not
have to enforce this law and
sometimes even do the work.

months. We should all try
to abide by them because
they are laws created to help

Fire at two Delphos schools

Delphos Herald
Two school fires, believed
to be of incendiary origin,
caused serious damage in
Delphos early Monday morn-
ing. The two fires were the
most disastrous in Delphos in
the past several years.
At about 2:20 a.m. Henry
Gemke Jr., South Pierce St.,
was passing the Franklin
school and noticed a blaze
in the northeast corner of
the building. He turned in
the alarm at 2:25 a.m. The

the flames were at their height,

building started in the furnace
room in the northeast part of
the building. There had been
no fire in the furnace since
last Friday. The blaze gutted
the commercial room directly
above the furnace room. The

entrance. The police report no

It is made clear that the
rebuilding of the structure will
be on a pay as you go plan
and the people of Delphos
will be ahead. Insurance
money already available will,
it is believed, take care of the
greater portion of the cost.
Little change is contem-
plated on the exterior of the

dow frames will be installed
and more window space will
be made available to conform
to state code. Some changes
will probably be made on the
entrances also.

Clubs Little League baseball program, presented six tee-
ball teams with shirts and caps. Members of the 8-9 year-
old team are Cory Noonan, Matt Klaus, David Weinandy,

The baseball program is also sponsored by the Delphos
Recreation Department.
The Jefferson Acme baseball team was shut out by
Van Wert 5-0. Sam Miller took the loss. He went seven
innings, struck out nine and didnt yield a walk. Jefferson
was paced by Mike Closson 2-for-3, Scot Boggs and Miller

FISHING REPORT Dodge, Penske on upswing

ANDOVER Many things
have changed in Ohio since the
early 1900s.
Ohios deer herd has gone
from scarce to world class and
the bald eagle, once on the edge
of extinction, has rebounded dra-
matically. But for most of Ohios
lakes, the past century has not
been so kind. Most
of the natural habitat
in Ohios reservoirs
has disappeared due
to natural causes.
Fish naturally relate
with habitat and
anglers typically key
in on these spots
but what happens
when the habitat dis-
appears?
Thanks to the Ohio Division of
Wildlife and numerous other state
agencies and conservation clubs,
anglers who fish Pymatuning have
another hot spot to try out. This
past week, these groups collabo-
rated on their annual structure
placement project on Ohios larg-
est inland lake.
The Short Plank Vertical
Structures are ideal for shallow
water that lacks natural habitat,
while the rock reefs can be used
at a variety of depths, says Matt
Wolfe, Fisheries Biologist for the
Ohio Division of Wildlife, who over-
sees this project. Both structure
types are ideal for the fisheries
that are available in Pymatuning.
The Plank Structures can be

the structures.
The goal of this project is to
introduce 500 structures into the
waters of Northeastern Ohio annu-
ally. With limited funding available,
none of this would be possible
without the help of local organi-
zations who have contributed to
this effort. The Pennsylvania Fish
and Boat Commission, Ohio State
Parks, Pennsylvania Department
of Conservation and Natural
Resources and the Pymatuning
Lake Association partnered up
with the Division of Wildlife on
this particular project in its attempt
to recruit the next generation of
anglers and retain the anglers who
already enjoy the sport of fishing.
The Fish Ohio Report
CENTRAL OHIO
Delaware Lake (Delaware
County) - This 1,017-acre lake
north of Columbus consistently
also being caught.
Lake Milton (Mahoning County)
Anglers are catching muskies,
largemouth bass and walleye
from the causeway of this 1,671-
acre lake; most exceed 15 inches.
White bass are being caught in
the back waters between Milton
and Berlin by Carsons landing.
West Branch Reservoir
(Portage County) - Muskellunge
have really turned on, being caught
by anglers focusing
their efforts around
weed beds and struc-
ture while using larger
lures. Casting jerkbaits
or trolling crankbaits
can produce monsters.
Largemouth bass are
also being caught on
jigs fished near the
bottom in 5-10 feet of
water; try white baits
or crayfish-imitating colors like
brown, black or green.
SOUTHWEST OHIO
Acton Lake (Preble County)
Good numbers of channel catfish
are being caught using shrimp,
cut bait and chicken livers fished
on the bottom under a bobber
or by tight-lining on the bottom.
Successful catfish areas include
the more shallow waters near the
boat ramp or along the dam, espe-
cially at night. Bluegill 6-8 inch-
es in length are being taken on
red or wax worms fished around
woody cover found in 6- to 15-foot
depths.
Cowan Lake (Clinton County)
Saugeye action is heating up,
with anglers taking better numbers
of 13- to 20-inchers; try casting
a 1/8- or 1/4-oz. jig tipped with a
piece of nightcrawler and hop it
along the bottom in 5-12 feet of
water near the beach. If you prefer
trolling, saugeye can be taken on
shad pattern medium- or deep-
diving crank baits. Lots of 7- to
8-inch crappies are being caught
on small tube jigs or minnows
fishing near submerged trees 6-15
feet deep. Bluegill can be caught
on red or wax worms near boat
docks or the edges of lily pads.
Lake Loramie (Shelby County)
Channel catfish are biting on
chicken liver, shrimp and stink
baits on the bottom. Lots of 6- to
7-inch bluegill have been caught
recently around boat docks, rip rap
shorelines and along the edges of
lily pads; try small jigs tipped with
wax worms fished just 1-2 feet
under a small bobber.
SOUTHEAST OHIO
Lake Hope (Vinton County)
Located in the Zaleski State
Forest region, this scenic lake can
be fished from both shore and
boat. There is shoreline and boat
access near the picnic and shelter
areas. Both bluegill and crappie
can be caught on minnows or
worms. Late evening fishing for
channel catfish should be done
after tumultuous 2009

Suddenly, Dodges woeful
2009 seems like a long time ago.
Save for Buschs solid fourth-
place finish in the Chase last fall,
2009 was a disaster for the com-
pany that first reached Victory
Lane in NASCAR 57 years ago.
Penskes other two cars, the
No. 77 driven by Sam Hornish
Jr. and the No. 12 split between
Keselowski and David Stremme,
combined for just seven top-10s,
all of them by Hornish.
Things were hardly better on
the business side of things. Sales
lagged during the economic down-
turn and companywide financial
restructuring slowed funding to
RPM, which went through two
rounds of layoffs and payroll

Nationwide race at Wisconsins
Road America this afternoon,
then fly to Sonoma, Calif., in time
for Sundays Sprint Cup race at
Infineon Raceway.
And yes, racing rivals Edwards
and Keselowski who famously
tangled on the track at Atlanta ear-
lier in the season will be taking
separate airplanes.
Edwards has made the most of
his commute in recent years, win-
ning the past two Nationwide races
at the Milwaukee Mile. But those
races might be the Miles last gasp,
at least as far as NASCAR is con-
cerned. Facing financial
problems, the historic
oval has withdrawn from
hosting major racing
events.
Taking its place on
the Nationwide sched-
ule is Road America, a
4-mile road course that
zigzags through a park-like setting
in scenic central Wisconsin.
The Miles race was held at
night but todays race at Road
America will take place in the after-
noon.
That has forced double-duty
drivers to tweak their schedules:
instead of trying to practice at
Sonoma on Saturday morning and
then hightail it to Wisconsin for
the race that night, as they did at
the Mile, drivers now must skip
Saturdays Sprint Cup practice
session.
It actually will make life a little
less hectic for drivers Edwards
once had to sprint through the
garage at Milwaukee to make
it to his car in time and Denny
Hamlin once missed the start of
the Milwaukee race because his
helicopter couldnt find anywhere
to land but perhaps tougher on
their teams.
Despite his success at
Milwaukee, Edwards said hes rel-
ishing the challenge of learning a
new track.
The local knowledge edge goes
to Menard, who grew up going to
the track as a fan and has raced
there before. He was fastest in
Thursday mornings practice.
Things havent been quite
as smooth for Keselowski and
Edwards.
Keselowski reported his car slid
off the track in Turn 6, a sharp
left-hander that comes immediately
after the crest of a steep hill, early
about the kink, a high-speed bend
that leads into a heavy braking
zone, by a friend who used to race
motorcycles at Road America.
Johnson ready to rush home
if babys on way: The golf cart will
be ready to whisk Jimmie Johnson
to the helicopter, which will be wait-
ing to rush him to the plane.

but Johnson is prepared should he
become a father early.
Part-time Cup driver Aric
Almirola is set to serve as an
emergency fill-in if
need be.
Johnson hopes he
can drive at least the
first lap of the upcom-
ing races because
that would mean hed
receive any points the
car earns. He has got-
ten plenty of advice from his fellow
drivers with young kids. The big-
gest recommendation is to take
advantage of his days at the track
to catch up on sleep because
when you get back home Sunday
night, its full contact.
Penskes expanded IRL team
- 3 winning drivers: When Ryan
Briscoe crossed the finish line
for his first victory of the season,
the accolades from his car owner
meant as much as the trophy and
trademark cowboy hat he got for
winning in Texas.
Briscoe really resumed when
I saw him as a great driver, this
was a terrific race, Roger Penske
said moments after the Australian
driver captured the IndyCar Series
last race and joined both his team-
mates as winners this season.
Racing for this team, theres
no better feeling than coming into
Victory Circle and getting congratu-
lated by the captain, Briscoe said.
To receive compliments from him,
its a great feeling. I want to get
many more of them this year.
Through the first seven races,
Penske has been able to give out
plenty of attaboys to his expand-
ed 3-car team.
Will Power, Helio Castroneves
and Briscoe are all in the top five
in IndyCar season points and each
has already won a race this sea-
son. Power won the first two.
The Penske team has started
from the pole in six consecutive
races, including Briscoe at Texas
weekend off.
Since Penske made its IndyCar
Series debut in 2001, the 3-time
Indianapolis 500 winneHelio
Castroneves is the only driver to
be part of the team every season.
The Brazilian has won at least
once each year and has 17 wins
overall in 137 IRL starts.
This is the first time since 1994
that Penske has fielded three full-
time open-wheel teams. Power
was only a substitute and part-
timer last season.
Power opened this season by
winning on street courses in Brazil
and St. Petersburg, claiming the
IRL points lead. He stayed on top
until a 14th-place finish at Texas
dropped him to No. 2, a mere three
points behind Indianapolis 500 win-
ner Dario Franchitti.
Scott Dixon, Franchittis team-
mate at Target Chip Ganassi
Racing, is third, while Castroneves
and Briscoe round out the top five.
Franchitti and Dixon finished
1-2 last season, when Briscoe won
three races and was the runner-up
eight times to finish third, only 12
points behind Franchitti and one
behind Dixon. Castroneves was
fourth despite missing a race.
Powers debut for Penske
came as a fill-in when Castroneves
missed the start of last season
while on trial for federal tax-evasion
charges. Castroneves returned to
the No. 3 car at Indy and won,
while Power was fifth in the No.
12 that Penske entered into three
more races after that. Power won
at Edmonton before he broke his
back in a practice crash at Sonoma
in August.
Penske got enough backing for
the third full-time team and Power
quickly got back up to speed.
After this weekends race in
Iowa, the IRL has five consecu-
tive races on road courses, where
Power is at his best.
Briscoes breakthrough in the
Lone Star State helped ease the
sting for the team after the disap-
pointment at Indianapolis, where
things had gone predictably well for
Penske until race day.
Castroneves gave the owner
a record 16th Indy 500 pole and
Power started beside him on the
front row. The team won the pit
contest again but didnt win its 16th
race at the Brickyard.
Briscoe crashed soon after
coming out of the pits late in the
race and Power overcame two mis-
haps to finish eighth, a spot ahead
of Castroneves after the defending
Indy 500 champion stalled his car
on the final stop.
