DECLARATION
I do hereby declare that the project entitled, CONTROLLING OF
POWER FLOW IN TRANSMISSION LINES USING FACTS DEVICES
submitted in the Department of Electrical Engineering, CIET Budbud in
partial fulfillment of requirement for the award of B.Tech is an
authentic work carried out by us during 2010-2014 under the guidance
of Prof. Krishnendu Maitra. To the best of my knowledge and belief, it
contains no material previously published or written by another author
nor material which has been accepted for the award of any degree or
diploma of the university or other institute of higher learning, except

ABSTRACT

Electrical energy plays a significant role in the development of a nation. Today, there is a
trend towards tremendous growth and phenomenal modernization of electric power systems
throughout the world, especially for developing countries. Grid network system has already
become popular. Therefore, for successful operations, Powerflow studies are of great
importance in planning and designing the future expansion of power systems as well as in
determining the best operation of existing system. Symmetrical steady state is, in fact, the most
important mode of operation of a power system. Electrical energy in form of 3-phase AC power
(active and reactive power) flows from various generating station buses to various connected
load buses via various network buses and branches of the transmission network. The voltages of
buses and their phase angles are affected by the power flow and vice versa. The principal
information obtained from power flow study is the magnitude and phase angle of the voltage at
each bus and the real and reactive power flowing in each line, other variables being specified.
As the system becomes larger and complex, UPFC plays an important role in this problem. It has
the accuracy and reliability to maintain the various system parameter like voltage magnitude
and angle by keeping the line flow and line loss in control. Here in this paper we tried to control
the line flow using UPFC and hence to find the optimum Pref and Q ref of UPFC using NewtonRaphson method. All the proposed iterative methods have been rigorously tested on IEEE 5-Bus
test systems under various simulated operating conditions using Matlab Software.
