High School Sports
High Schools around the world provide students with sport programs that he or she can
participate in. Sports affect high school students significantly. Sports are an activity involving
physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for
entertainment. These programs vary and give every student enrolled an equal opportunity to
participate in these. High school sports are beneficial in multiple ways. Sports provide students
with an opportunity to gain social skills, improve his or her physical state, and even provide
student-athletes with the chance to receive a scholarship. Individuals who participate in high
school sports are given a various amount of beneficial opportunities.
Participating in high school sports require a lot of physical activity. Kids who play
sports develop general physical fitness in a way that's fun, and they establish lifelong habits for
good health (Metzel). At St. James High School, teams come together after school and meet for
practice. During practice, student-athletes are required to condition and work to become better at
succeeding in the sport he or she is involved with. After school, Monday through Friday, the
girls and boys basketball team practices. During practices these teams are required to run. In the
game of basketball, players run most of the time he or she is playing. Endurance and good health
is needed when one is on the court playing. Therefore, during practice building an individuals
endurance is a priority during conditioning. Not only do players practice everyday during the
week, but when basketball season rolls around, they will have to add game to their schedule.

When the athletes are not on the court, they are at school. Students have the opportunity to
exercise and 48 have a break from school (Jackson). These individuals spend so much time at
practice and because of this, they are receiving a great deal of exercise. According to The Perks
and Pitfalls of Youth Sports, being involved in sports decrease the possibility of becoming obese
which in unhealthy. Participating in sports improve a student-athletes physical state and makes
he or she healthier.
High School only lasts for so long. While one is in high school, he or she can only
participate in sports for four years. When an individual develops a passion for a sport, he or she
may want to play longer than their high school career could provide for them. According to
College and High School Sports, colleges offer this chance to those individuals. Students who
participate and are dedicated in high school sports have a higher chance of receiving scholarships
than those who do not (Jackson). If one works hard enough and excels in that specific sport,
colleges more than likely will offer scholarships to these individuals. An athletic scholarship is a
form of scholarship to attend a college or university awarded to an individual based
predominantly on his or her ability to play in a sport. College is expensive to those who attend
or plan to attend. According to the article Hillary sport scholarship for Megan, scholarships are
given to to students who had been recognised as high achievers academically, and who also had
excelled in his or her sport. Scholarships provide a sense of financial relief for individuals who
receive them. Not only do high school sports provide student-athletes with a great opportunity to
excel high school, but high school sports also give one an opportunity to excel beyond high
school.
Not only do students who participate in sports gain scholarships and an opportunity to
become fit, but participation in sports provides opportunities for leadership and socialization, as

well as the development of skills for handling success and failure (Metzel). Students who
participate in school sports gain beneficial and necessary social skills that will affect he or she in
the future. According to the article Playing Sports Benefits Children, sports affect ones
relationship with adults, allows one to build relationships with other individuals, allow one to
participate in a community, and allow he or she to gain an opportunity to learn how to work well
with one and other. In the article "Sport Benefits Kids In So Many Ways.., it states that sports
offer much more than just fitness. For example, ...it teaches a couple's kid that if life is
difficult, one can overcome those obstacles (Sports Benefits Kids in So Many Ways..). When
an individual joins a sports team, he or she is forced to work with other individuals and build a
relationship with these individuals. In the article Organized Sports can Benefit Children, it
discusses the importance of team players and states that everybody admires the team players
(Brooks). One must learn how to participate well with others in order to be apart of that team
and make that team the best he or she can make it.
High school sports provide many opportunities for individuals who participate in them.
Those who engage and become involved with sports have a higher quality outcome and learn
multiple lessons. For example, those who participate learn how to work well with other, learn
how to create an appropriate relationship with an adult, and also learn that if life throws difficult
obstacles at an individual, he or she must overcome the obstacle. High school sports give one an
opportunity to live a healthier and higher quality of life. Participation in high school sports
develop life skills and provide one to change the outcome of his or her future. Students who
