Understand how forces (pushes or pulls) affect the
motion of an object (No CCSS for this lesson because I

ES)
Daily Lesson Objective (1): Students will learn about how push and pull affect motion. They will then go to the
playground to find different equipment that requires a push, a pull, or both. They will then fill out their lab report.
Students will earn at least points.
21st Century Skills (1): Discovery and investigative skills Academic Language Demand (Language Function and
Vocabulary): Gravity, force, motion, push, pull
Prerequisite knowledge and skills needed (1): What is a
push and what is a pull

Description of Activities and Setting

Time
T will go over lesson vocabulary with S using real life
3 min
examples and then check for understanding. Vocabulary
words include gravity, force, motion, push and pull.
S will find things around the room they can see that have
2 min
gravity, or that they can use a force of pushing or pulling
to move around.
S will then have a discussion with T explaining what they 8 min
found and why they think it can be moved with the force
push or pull. T will explain how to fill out the lab report
during this time so S can prepare to go to the playground.
S will go out to the playground, exploring with a partner
10 min
to find different things that can be moved by forces push
and pull. While walking back inside, T will ask S to think
very hard about what they found on the playground.
Lab reports will be graded by accuracy of method of force 8 min
and placement on lab report. S will be expected to write
two things from the playground that were push and two
things from the playground that were pull.

Reflection on lesson: This lesson was wonderful to teach. I was uneasy because I havent been at the school for over a
week, but the students were very excited to see me and engaged in the lesson quickly. The students responded very
well. Overall, every child completed their lab report. The grades were as follows: 4/4: 13 students. 3/4: 2 students.
