Staying Active in School

QUOTE OF
THE MONTH:
Pleasure in the job puts
perfection in the work.
-Aristotle

Welcome to Ms. Georges

First Grade Classoom
September 2016

Physical education is extremely important in

staying healthy. It is an integral part of the
total education of every student, from
Kindergarten through high school.
Physical competence, health-related
fitness, self-responsibility and enoyment of
physical activity for all students are just
some of the many benefits of staying active
at school!
Physical Activity supports other subjects. It
reinforces knowledge learned across the
curricul and serves as a lab for applying our
science, math and social studies contents!
It also strengthens peer relationships, being
a major force in helping children stay social
and gives them opportunities to learn
positive teamwork and people skills.
It also improves self-esteem and confidence
of students! It gives students a strong sense
of worth and helps them being
independent, self-controlled, and assertive!

Self Determination Theory

Having Trouble Motivating Your Kids?

Motivation is critical in supporting sustained
exercise and that itself is associated with
important health outcomes.
Lack of motivation can broadly be explained
by two orders of factors:
1. People may not be sufficiently
interested in exercise, or value its
outcomes enough to make it a priority in
their lives
2. Some people may not feel sufficiently
competent at physical activities, feeling
either not physically fit enough or skilled
enough to exercise, or they may have
health limitations that present a barrier
to activity
Keeping Kids Motivated
Find an activity they enjoy so they will do it a lot,
feel accomplished, and want to do it even more!

Intrinsic motivation: someone does an activity

because they enjoy it
Extrinsic motivation: doing an activity to obtain
an outcome separable from the activity
There is competence, relatedness and
autonomy, how they work together shows how
motivated one is
-

Competence- I can do this task, I have

skills knowledge and ability

Autonomy- I have the freedom to

choose, I am not being forced to do this
activity

Relatedness- I am welcomed and

appreciated by others, I am valuable
and want to be valued

In our class, we are focusing on motivating

students to be active! Be aware of the
difference between intrinsic and extrinsic to
get the best results for your child!

New Year, New Reasons to Stay Active!

What Happens if your Kid
doesnt like Sports?
Not every child has to join a
Contact
team to get the
Information
recommended amount of
physical fitness! Some who
havent practiced a specific
sport might need time to
learn to love it!
What do you do?
Practice! Even if they still
dont enjoy it they are being
active and spending quality
time with you! Help build skills
with them to help them
succeed so they are
confident!
Talk to them! Always find out
why they dont like the
activity! It could be the
activity itself, or it could be
the team or coaches!

New Reasons to Stay Fit!

As the winter drags on, it is
likely childrens activities will
be at an all time low.
Being fit impacts ones
happiness! As it continues to
get dark in cold, it isnt
unusual that children get
moody and unmotivated.
Keep them moving and keep
pushing them to stay active.
Go over healthy eating with
them and keep in mind the
diseases they could get, like
obesity, if they refrain from
activity!
Remember physical exercise
influences cognitive and
emotional well-being!
