Lesson Plan #2 Descriptive Writing
Title of the Lesson: Painting a Picture with Words
Academic Objectives: Students will be able to know what an adjective is and how to use it to
make their writing more descriptive. They will apply this knowledge to their writing process
(prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing).
Key Concepts and Academic Standards:
Standard 4 (Writing: Process)
4.4.3 Provide details and explanations
Standard 5 (Writing: Applications)
4.5.1 Write narratives (stories) that include: provide a context to allow the reader to
imagine the word, the event, or the experience: concrete sensory details
Standard 6 (Writing: English Language Conventions)
4.6.3 Create interesting sentences by using words that describe, explain, or provide
additional details and connections, such as adjectives
Approximate Duration of the Lesson: This lesson should take about an hour
Materials Needed for Implementation of the Lesson:

Everyday objects around the room

My painting
Paper with instructions based on different tiers
Writing tools

Key Vocabulary:

Adjective a word the describes a noun

Noun a person, place or thing
Prewriting exploring ideas and organizing the details before you actually start writing
Drafting write a sloppy copy; where you have everything written down, it can just use
improvement
Revising improving your sloppy copy by finding errors and improving your writing
Editing have someone (parent, friend, teacher) check your work so you can have all your errors
(grammar, spelling, mechanics) fixed so you are ready for your final copy
Publishing this is your final neat copy that can be hung up and shared.
Instructional Steps Utilized:
1. I will start by asking the students to describe things in the class room (what kind,
how many, and which one questions), and informing them that these descriptive
words are adjectives.
2. Next, I will have the students recall (level one on the depth of knowledge chart)
what a noun is, what the writing process is, and how to use a word web.
3. We will then work on coming up with descriptive adjectives together.
4. Then, I will explain to them that they are going to be writing about a painting that
I made. To help show them what I want, I will choose some pictures out of a
magazine and have the students help me describe the pictures with adjectives.
5. The students will then start to work on their prewriting by constructing (level two
on the depth of knowledge chart) their adjectives and ideas on their prewriting
paper with a word web.
6. The students will start their rough draft of the assignment and ask questions if
needed.
7. Next, they will look at their paper and revise (level three on the depth of
knowledge chart) it to make sure that they meet the requirements of their tier and
are using adjectives.
8. Then, they will have a friend edit their paper to make sure that they followed
instructions.

9. Finally, they will create (level four on the depth of knowledge chart) their
published copy and we will hang them in the room.
10. If a child finishes early, they can color or draw their own picture that we as a class
can use to talk about adjectives.
Culminating Activity/Activities: I will then use the drawings the kids made to have them tell
me some adjectives. In the following days, when the students tell me a story I will ask
descriptive questions (how many, what color, ect.) and ask them to use adjectives to paint a
picture for me.
Assessment Methods: The students will be placed into three different tiers based on their
writing level. Tier one students will have the most difficult assignment; they will have a longer
assignment that will require the use of more adjectives where they have to make a story about the
painting. Tier two will have a more moderate assignment; they will have to write a little less than
and use fewer adjectives than the tier one group and they will place themselves in the painting
and describe what it would be like there. Tier three will just describe the painting by using five
adjectives.

Painting a Picture with Words (Tier One)

Name___________________

Write a descriptive story about the painting. The story needs to have at least two paragraphs (five
sentences makes a paragraph, so at least ten sentences are needed) and use one or two adjective
in every sentence (at least four sentences need more than two adjectives in it), but the more the
better. Use the bottom of this sheet to prewrite.

Painting a Picture with Words (Pier Two)

Name___________________

Write a descriptive paragraph (five sentences makes a paragraph) about what it would be like to
be inside the painting. What would you see, smell, and hear. Make sure to include one or two
adjectives per sentence. An adjective describes a noun. Use the bottom of this paper to do your
prewriting and your word web.

Painting a Picture with Words (Tier Three)

Name___________________

Adjective describes a noun

Noun is a person, place, or thing

Look at the painting and write five descriptive sentences about what you see. What color are
things? How many trees are there? Questions like that that answer the how many, which one,
what kind questions. Make sure to use at least one adjective in each sentence. Use the space
below to start your prewriting and your word web.
