Concept Being Taught: Writing an adventure narrative
Grade Level: Third Grade
School: John F. Kennedy Elementary

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.3:Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.3.A: Establish a situation and introduce a narrator and/or characters; organize an
event sequence that unfolds naturally.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.3.B: Use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop
experiences and events or show the response of characters to situations.

Throughout this unit, students will be learning lessons that are tied into these writing standards. Students will be
focusing on creating a narrative that is an imagined adventure. The lessons they will learn will be strategies and
techniques to help describe their characters, events, settings, and other key components of a narrative.

Learner Background - What learning/imbedded skills related to this particular skill/concept has been previously
taught to support this goal?
Prior to this lesson, the unit that the students were focusing on personal narratives. So some similar lessons were
taught that will be taught in this unit. However, this time they do not have to focus so much on making
everything
truthful and can use this opportunity to use their imagination. In the previous unit, they learned how to acquire
writing skills such as focusing on specific scenes and using descriptive words so readers can see it in their
minds
through the words they use. This will apply to this lesson as well. The students will be very excited to let their
creative minds loose and create a fictional adventure narrative for this unit.
Assessments - How will the students demonstrate what they know and understand about the learning? Include
BOTH Formative and Summative Assessments. List performance task, if any.
Summative: Pre and Post Assessments (both on-demand writing pieces)
Formative: Continued work on their narrative pieces, graphic organizers, quizzes and character profile sheets.
