I. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure, Concept, or

Principle):
Teachers will demonstrate the correlation of Japanese Zen gardens and expressive art
through interpretive dance.
II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective): need to update
Students will be able to understand the cultural importance of Japanese Zen gardens
through a similar art form in dance.
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence):
Introduction to Middle School art and preparation for high school content.
IV. INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activities): Students will be introduced to the
lesson through a warm up activity including a small set of breathing, stretching, and
kinesthetic movements.
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology with Student
Activities):
Build conceptual knowledge of components of Zen garden relating to dance:

a. Teacher will write three components of a Zen garden on the board with brief
definitions.
Kanso - simplicity
Shizen - natural
Ma - space
Teaching Relation of dance and Zen garden:
Teacher will explain Kanso and demonstrate how it applies to dance.
Teacher will explain Shizen and demonstrate how it applies to dance.
Teacher will explain Ma and demonstrate how it applies to dance.
C. APPLICATION ACTIVITY (Practice and/or Reflection):

Teaching Application of components of Zen garden to dance

Teacher will instruct students to do movements using the three
components to express their feeling while listening to the music
D. MATERIALS & RESOURCES:
Writing board and pictures of basic elements in Japanese gardens
Music (sound of a waterfall)
Comfortable clothes
Dance studio
V. ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES (Methods for Obtaining Evidence of Learning):
While students are participating, the teacher will watch the students and make mental
notes about the students understanding of the subject.
Students will be asked what emotions the lesson elicited for them and if they
understand the connection of Japanese Gardens and expressive dancing.
VI. ACCOMMODATIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL LEARNERS (CONTENT,
INSTRUCTION, and PRACTICE):
ASL interpreter will be available
Hands on activities and visual demonstrations will be available
One on one bilingual aid for ELL.
VII. HOMEWORK (IF APPROPRIATE):
Students will be assigned to read a book, magazine, or watch a video to learn a dance
that incorporates different elements relating to a Zen garden. The students will have to
develop their own dance with the involvement of their family members. They may not
use the dance already demonstrated in the previous class meeting. Dance combinations
presented by the students will be performed in the next class meeting.
