1 EXT. DEAD SPACE -- DAY
WIDE SHOT: Just empty blackness,somewhere in space. No
stars, no planets, just space.

Its quiet, so quiet...


And there, hanging; floating, not really moving:
A SPACE CAPSULE- very contemporary, very ordinary, just a
tube, like a baked bean can.

Quite far out, small, NOT FILLING FRAME


Beat.
Just a few seconds, no noise, absorb the sights. Then...

NEWSREADER (V.O)
And, there, we can see some live
footage now, directly from our long
range telescopes, the B-16 space
capsule, part of OPERATION CHECK
MATE. It is the first manned space
mission to the planet Ravenna for
21 years. Conventional methods of
faster than light travel are of
course impossible because of the
long term ion storm, and so these
brave astronauts have embarked on
this five year journey, against the
odds, to extend the hand of
friendship to the stranded
population, and re-establish their
links with the empire...
Newsreader, nice, old man, calm voice, maybe a nice accent,
a Geordie?
During his speech were PUSHING IN on space capsule.

2 INT. SPACESHIP -- DAY


MUSIC ROAD TO HELL [BOTH PARTS] by CHRIS REA
The COCKPIT, nothing modern, cramped, metal, again quite
contemporary

Inside three ASTRONAUTS, relaxing, nice, bit of a drink in a


squeezey silver carton- lovely.
Two astronauts; HARVEY, ZURAB, playing CHESS.
All wrapped up, nice and warm, in space suits; very B-movie
sci-fi, all orange and fat, and boiler suit-like, insulated.
No helmets on, though.
The Chess board is magnetic or something, bit weird, bit
clunky.

Another astronaut, John, bit of a geek, nice silver


frameless glasses, not much hair at the front, little
moustache.
Hes heating up some food, silver packages, in a heater:
hole in the wall, cash machine type thing, standing,
waiting, doing a little tap-tap-tappedy-tapp thing with his
finger.
SOUND FX: whirring, microwave-ish sort of noise, bit sci-fi

CU: John, still waiting...


Beat.
Then- Pingg!- food done. John takes it out- mind, its hot!-
walks over to the others [Harvey, Zurab], plonks it on the
table.
Both nod; bit awkward, concentrating on the game, they dont
get on that well.
JOHN
Good game?
ZURAB
(concentraing, not listening)
Yes, good nutri-packs thanks!

JOHN
Oh! Um, thanks, I guess. Its not
hard.
HARVEY
(Doesnt much like John)
No, its not, I- Check mate!
ZURAB
Aah... yes, you are right. Well
done...

(CONTINUED)

HARVEY
Five in a row now!

JOHN
Well done! On a roll now, got the
luck when you needed it as well, I
guess...
HARVEY
(Angrily, looking for a fight)
Its not luck-
Hssssss.....
Interrupted by...

SOUND FX: a hissing, static sound, filtered through the


speakers. Carries on throughout dialogue, scene, etc
They ignore it for a bit, still talking about the game- its
all a bit confrontational, a bit provovative

Hssssssss.....
Again! Louder!
The astronauts look up, nervously, a bit. Frown. Nothing
dramatic, just a bit unexpected. Bit creepy: Brrrr, bit
chilly!
John bounces -floats?- over to a PANEL
ZURAB
(Partly to break up the
argument)
Well? Whats that noise?
JOHN
Just checking...
John touches a few buttons, and...
Beat...

SOUND FX: A beep, a whirl, a little whistle. All very


2001..
Beat. Reading, understanding... or not. Doh! What is it?!
JOHN
It says that...I dunno where its
coming from? Not anything wrong
with the systems. Not
from...anywhere. It doesnt exist.

HARVEY
Dont be ridiculous, it must be.
Check again.
Meanwhile...

HSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
SOUND FX: The static increases in pitch, like the wind
howling through the loft in your grandmothers drafty,
creaky, bump-in-the-night-y house.

Spooky...
Almost like a murmuring...
John presses a few buttons.

Again,
SOUND FX: Bit of beeping, a whistle.
JOHN
Nope, still there. Or not there.
Whatever I do to the scanners
ZURAB
Did anyone else- did you hear that-

Interrupted.
HARVEY
(big man, trys to hide it, but
bit scared)
It must be, it is there, I can hear
it. Stop it, just... turn the
speakers off, or something.
ZURAB
(Bit anxiously now)
No, but really, did anyone hear
that?
The pitch of the noise increases, and just, just maybe....
words? A moaning sound, a groaning, a... voice?!?!

VOICE
At.....
HARVEY
...What the hell...?

VOICE
At last...

HARVEY ZURAB
John? John, for gods sake Make it stop, I dont like
man, do something!?! it, really...

John hammers at the panel, talking, fast-fast:

JOHN
Mayday! Mayday! I repeat, mayday!
Can anyone hear us?
VOICE
...no-one can
The voice is detached, emotionless, perfectly blank.
The other... are not. Real panic, talking, noise, fear,
adrenaline. Jolly good!

JOHN
I repeat, Can anyone hear us? Are
you listening control?
CU: John steels himself

CU:Zurab and Harvey exchange a terrified look


Then, John...
JOHN
(Stronger)
What are you?
VOICE
(Its not heard them)
...After so long... we have flesh!
HARVEY
What the hell is this? Sir, I am
asking you a question. What are
you? Are you an angel?

VOICE
Angel....No, we are gods, and we
have flesh again...
HARVEY
How do you have flesh? What does
that mean? Youre just... a
nothing, a trick of the radio, a
signal, nothing.

(CONTINUED)

VOICE
We have flesh. It means you,
humans, Harvey. John, Zurab, are
disposable. It means for once in
your puny, stunted lives, you have
worth. It means you are a part of
me now. And, I suppose, it means...
you are dead.
CU: Harvey. Terrified. Literally, pants-wettingly terrified.

HARVEY
(babbling)
No...No, no what do you mean. I
cant die, not yet, who are you...
CU: Zurab. Out of his depth, confused, scared.

CU: John. Sad. really, just so sad.


Beat.
Then, it happens...

CU: The SPEAKERS


FX: A GOLDEN LIGHT, glowing, a gentle trail, spirals around
the room, in a thin stream.

FX: the light, gathers, more and more, than spreads out:
three streams. Each one winds across the room- not scary,
gentle, graceful-
Then each one FORCES itself down the throat of one of the
astronauts, VIOLENT, nasty.
Immediately they fall to the floor, three bodies.
Thump!

Beat. Long pause. HIGH ANGLE over the bodies


HIGH ANGLE (CRANE?): Then, one by one, they pick themselves
up, stand up, in a ring, a circle, Three of them.
O.S: HARVEY: the other two astronauts, in a ring, eyes
closed, heads bowed.
SLOWLY PAN ROUND outside the circle, slowly, behind then:
Harvey, Zurab, John, Harvey again, Zurab...
Waiting.

Theyre just standing there, not moving, not looking, not...


anything.
Long pause, few seconds. Nasty, chilly music, (a bit
spaghetti western maybe?), threatening.

Then...
Snap!
All of their heads snap up, bolt upright, looking ahead.But
we cant see their faces, one of the heads- Harveys?
Then, they all look up, at the ceiling, and beyond, looking
further...
HIGH ANGLE: (CRANE): Looking down at them, and...

FX: all of them have that same glow in their eyes, the same
yellow light. Oooh! Nasty!
Then...

HARVEY & ZURAB & JOHN


At last! I have flesh! And I am
reborn!... I will rule again! We
will reclaim our galaxy!
MUSIC ROAD TO HELL FADE OUT.

CUT TO TITLES
CUT TO:

3 INT. PERFORMANCE ARENA -- DAY


AUDIENCE P.O.V: A big, wooden, ring type construction, all
nicely upholstered seats, usual thing, the CAMERA is sitting
quite high up, near the top

PRAC: LIGHTS off, we cant see the center of the ring.


Gradually people filing in, sitting down: no humans, all
varieties of ALIENS, a real assortment, maybe some
BLATHAREEN, the rest are new.

Gradually the noise dies down, like it does...


BLAMMMM!!!!! The lights come on, and we can see the center,
its... just sand, not much, all flat where people have
trodden on it.

Then, MUSIC. Sad, haunting, just one or two FEMALE VOICES,


unseen, quiet, bit like the SONG OF FREEDOM, 4.3, or
DOOMSDAY, 2.13.
And, from a small entrance, the PERFORMERS enter.

These are the GNAECIANS, a nice typical alien: quite short


lizard-men, standing upright on short, powerful hind legs,
blue scales, knobbly and lumpy, but shiny, like pearls,
reflecting all the different colors. Forked tongues as well,
of course.

All dressed differently, very diverse: the performance is a


bit like a ballet, or a carnival, all very nice. Most of
them in all different colored silks, all floaty and lovely
and ballerina-y, a few in crepe paper-ish stuff. Lots of
headdresses, all long and dangly, feathers everywhere of
course, and lots of bangles, got to have bangles, bracelets,
more feathers, beads- the works. Theyre quite a tribal
society, sort of Native American meets Masai, probably quite
a lot of piercings...Oh, and maybe have some wearing skins,
leopard skins, something like that. AND, if possible, it
would be good to have some riding some other creatures like
horses but I dont know, with... eight legs? Human top
halves? Wings? Something cheap?
There should probably be about five or so GNAECIANS in a
sort of CHINESE DRAGON costume, bamboo scaffolding propping
up a great big colorful costume of a dragon-thing.

The Gnaecians start dancing round and round, in circles,


again influenced by tribal dances, a few standing in the
middle, or at the side, with musical instruments, but still
SOUNDLESS apart from MUSIC, the same haunting singing, with
INSTRUMENTAL BACKING now though.
Its really spectacular, breathtaking- just so alien for
once, a nice proper alien civilization.

VOICEOVER: A (gnaecian) Journalist XERISPHOD, arts


correspondent.
XERISPHOD (O.O.V)
Good evening, this is me
Xerisphod, GINCs arts and
literature correspondence, and Im
here reviewing the dance of our
people. This is the dance of the
Gnaecians. A precise ritual,
repeated a multitude of times down
the generations by our people, a

ripple in time from the incident
known as Occurrence TARDIS,
thousands of years ago. Know idea
what that means, havent got the
clearance to get near the bally
files, what. Starts off with the
singing. This part is so moving it
always brings members of the
audience to tears. Then, the
dancing, elegant steps, perfectly
co-ordinated through centuries of
practice and refining. Some of the
dancers wear feathers from the
Delhian birds, priceless relics
from a forgotten people, their
bodies turned to skeletons, their
skeletons to sediment, their
sediment to dust, and their dust
buried under boiling seas and
flaming skies, heaving with the
weight of the neer sleeping
universe, remembered by few save
those who study them. Their passing
into extinction was marked by few,
mourned by less. They were destined
to die, when the human race, barely
evolved enough to walk, just a few
millennia since it crawled out of
the primordial soup that gave birth
to them, in whose pregnant belly
they swelled up, stumbled upon
them....

...VOICEOVER FADE OUT


...MUSIC FADE OUT
Most of the Gnaecians exit, gradually, leaving just a FEW
GNAECIAN SPIRITSINGERS, all women, in the center.

Beat.
Gradually, they arrange themselves up, a line, seven or so
in a line.

And they sing.


Like the MUSIC we heard earlier, but more powerful- more
singing, and so sad; quiet, haunting, a nice MURRAY GOLD
whats it.

And as they sing...

FX: Gradually, an IMAGE appears, floating in the air high


up, above their heads, floating, coalescing in the air, all
in 3-D, made up of smoke, and light, so, so beautiful.
They have sung this into existence; an image of their songs,
bit like going to the cinema for us; they sing up a story.
The image is of PEOPLE: two people, hard to see properly
though.
VOICEOVER RESUMES...

XERISPHOD (O.O.V)
Their dance continues, labyrinth,
complicated, spirals and
pirouettes. And they sing, still
they sing. And as they sing, their
words, their thoughts, their
dreams, their hopes, are projected
into the air, a huge image, in four
dimensions, a moving, crystal clear
psychic resonance, showing their
story, their song.

VOICEOVER FADES OUT...


PUSH IN: Closer to the image, front row seats level now, but
up in the air.

PUSH IN: Closer to to the image, we might recognize the


people...
PUSH IN: IMAGE fills FRAME, semi-transparent, all greens and
blues and sepia...

THE DOCTOR! And Florence! In the cinema-type-thing! (Theyre


in the TARDIS, moving round it, talking.)
VOICEOVER CONCLUDES...

XERISPHOD (O.O.V)
Their whole lives they are singing
this song. They sing such a
beautiful song. They sing the song
of the doctor...

NB: ALL SCENES FROM NOW ARE FLASHBACK, THE SAME STORY THE
GNAECIANS ARE WATCHING, BUT LIVE...
FADE TO:

4 INT. TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM -- DAY


B/G: The DOCTOR, running round like a mad thing, hitting
buttons, levers. But this is all B/G.

F/G: CU: Florence, a bit oblivious, hardly noticing him,


standing LEFT FRAME, staring out AT CAMERA, thinking, bit
sad.
SOUND FX: (Recap/REPEAT: From IVB.3; Where the freakish
creatures play;)

FLORENCE
Youve told me nothing. Who you
are, where your from. If your
alien, or scientist, or... Youve
kept secrets, and told me nothing.
Not asked about me, or my family.
And then, when it stops being fun,
when theres no-one to show off to,
you tell me Im a mistake. An
accident. Thats not fair.

THE DOCTOR
(so hurt, because he knows
its true)
Get out!

FLORENCE
But-
THE DOCTOR
No! Get! Out! Were going back to
earth, right now, Florence, and you
are walking out those doors, never
to come back in. Were going. Now!
Then, the doctor stops, straitens up, coughs. Walks over.
PULL AWAY to HIGH SHOT: The Doctor walks up to her, knows
there is something a bit wrong...
THE DOCTOR
Florence? Are you okay? Something
wrong?

FLORENCE
...No. No, Im fine.
THE DOCTOR
Good! Okay-dokey then, where do you
wanna go? Anywhere in the whole
galaxy! The whole of time! The
(MORE)

whole of history, at the touch. Of
a button.
FLORENCE
(Shes been thinking about
this, almost says it without
thinking)
Erm... the year 3000. Home.
THE DOCTOR
(Sudden change; hurt,
offended, forced brightness)
Okay. Fine.
FLORENCE
Not permanently, just to see... my
boyfriend doesnt even know where I
am, doctor.
THE DOCTOR
Good. Sure.

FLORENCE
Is that a problem?
THE DOCTOR
No! Why would it be a problem?

FLORENCE
(feels she owes him an
explanation)
Cos, when I woke up, in the year
3000, I had nothing, but... well,
he was there for me. And then, he
had to go. He was an astronaut, and
he had to go on this mission, to a
planet, that had been trapped by
this... ion storm, so no-one had
been able to go there for ages, he
was on the first ship to go back
there.
THE DOCTOR
Yup. Okay.

FLORENCE
Cos its just, I dunno how to tell
him, I travel in time, but this...
if we arrived before him, on the
planet, Ravenna, we were waiting
for him... would make it easier.

(CONTINUED)

BCU:: The doctor. He slowly walks over to the console, hands


in his pockets; eyes are dark, a bit sad. Clever as well.
Not again!
He fiddles with some switches, presses a button.

THE DOCTOR (CONTD)


Done. On our way. Wont be long. Be
a few minutes. Ill call you.
Florence looks at him, for a moment, knows theres something
wrong, not sure what.
Beat.
She looks at him, thinking, how to ask, should she ask...

Then she leaves, walks out the console room...


Leaving the doctor alone, standing, leaning into the time
rotor.
Alone again, inside...

FADE THRU BLACK TO:

5 EXT. RAVENNA CITY - LOWER LEVELS -- DAY

Chilly day, bit nippy, one of those bright-sun-but-Grey


days, wind.
WIDE MATTE SHOT: Its on the outskirts of a CITY. Like
Marrakesh, or Kenya: All small, stone, tumble-down,
paint-peeling CUBE BUILDINGS, all painted in bright colors,
orange, yellow, red. Lots of SHACKS as well, corrugated
iron, mud. Outside the buildings, braziers in the streets,
trestles with food, fruit, carved wooden things on, massive
ALIEN ANIMAL on a spit being cooked, that sort of stuff.
Dirt/mud tracks.Lots of poverty, but no-one to be seen.
Really exotic, nice, different. Not much plant life, but
definitely alien; HUGE TREES here and there, strange
flowers.
Then, FX: The TARDIS arrives, with:
SOUND FX: wheezing, groaning engines.

MID-FRAME, facing us.


Beat.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (2) 14.

Then, the doors open, and Florence leaves, summery clothes:


expecting good weather. She RUNS out the doors, laughing,
barely able to stand up. Really happy!

She runs TOWARDS CAMERA, facing in the other direction,


still babbling on to the doctor, and then, I say: But
youre green! And he says; it doesnt make me a
slitheen!...

She FILLS FRAME, passes THRU, behind us now, but the CAMERA
HOLDS. Still pointing at the TARDIS, one door open, waiting
for the Doctor.
SOUND FX: We can hear Florences footsteps getting further
away, she runs off, exploring.

Beat.
Then, quickly: CAMERA PANS, fast, about head height. PANS
FORWARD, closer to the TARDIS, closer, then, INSIDE!

PAN TO:

6 INT. TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM -- DAY


...Still moving, up to the console, to...

THE DOCTOR! Standing there, by the console, where we last


saw him. Has he moved? He looks up, right AT CAMERA.
PUSH TO CU: THE DOCTOR. So sad, so old.

CLOSE: The Doctors hand, rested on one particular button...


Then...
FLORENCE (O.O.V)
Doctor! Doctor! Where are you?!?
You coming?
THE DOCTORS P.O.V: The TARDIS doors, open, and outside
Florence, coming back, looking confused.
FLORENCE (O.O.V)(CONTD)
Doctor? Youd really like John, you
should meet him, hes just like you
really...
CU: THE DOCTOR, looking so sad. So, so, sad. Because he
knows what he has to do. Hes made a decision.
CLOSE: The Doctors hand. It twitches. The finger presses
the button.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (2) 15.

THE DOCTORS P.O.V: The doors slam shut, just as Florence


was about to enter, slamming shut- thumppp!!!- shutting her
out. Eh?!?
The Doctor reaches for another button, presses it, still
looking so sad. Little Beep! as he presses it.
THE DOCTOR
Florence. Listen to me. First of
all Im sorry. Im so sorry.

CUT TO:

7 EXT. RAVENNA CITY- LOWER LEVELS -- DAY


Florence outside, standing, pressed up against the TARDIS,
desperately rattling the handle, shouting.
FLORENCE
Doctor! Doctor, its not funny! Let
me in! What are you doing! Doctor?

The TARDIS speaker systems cut in, with the Doctors words
from PREVIOUS SCENE.
Immediately she stops moving, and listens.
THE DOCTOR [O.O.V]
Florence, I want to say... thanks.
And sorry. Really, so sorry. Thank
you, cos traveling with you was
brilliant. I loved it. And sorry,
because Im sorry of what Im about
to do to you. Sorry Im leaving
you, like this, gone from your
life... The ultimate sacrifice, for
both of us. Youll forget me, move
on, carry on with your life, with
your boyfriend. Your brilliant
boyfriend. Whole new planet, just
for you! First new humans here, for
how long? Come on, thats brilliant
as well! You dont belong in the
twentieth century, you belong here!

FLORENCE
Why?
THE DOCTOR [O.O.V]
Because people who travel with me
they... they get hurt. Ive lost so
many friends, so many brilliant,
(MORE)
(CONTINUED)

THE DOCTOR [O.O.V] (contd)


brilliant friends, and I promised
myself: no more. But then I met
you, and that was good, and that
was great, but that was wrong. Its
dangerous... Im dangerous. You
travel with me, you get hurt. So,
thats it. Im going.
FLORENCE
No! Doctor, please, what are you
saying?! You cant do this, to me!
You showed me.... everything!
Youve got no right to take it
away! No right!
THE DOCTOR [O.O.V]
I know... Sometimes, the people you
love most, you have to leave. Ill
carry on. Alone. Ill still be out
there, fighting. I have... so much
power. Too much. I could bring down
a thousand empires, topple a
hundred thousand dictators, shut
down a million super computers, and
wipe out the dinosaurs, all before
tea. But on my own. Like it should
be. Take some time out.

FLORENCE
(crying)
No, please, doctor, just think!
This is amazing, its perfect, I
cant stop, I just wanted to see
him again!
THE DOCTOR [O.O.V]
Shhh. Getting too old for this.
This universe... theres more
death, and pain, than ever. It used
to be fun.
Through this, ON Florence.
No!!! He cant?!?

THE DOCTOR [O.O.V]


Go on Florence. Do the biggest
thing of your life. Walk away. Turn
around, and walk. Keep on walking,
dont look back. Be stronger than I
am. Be a bigger man than me.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (3) 17.

FLORENCE
You cant
THE DOCTOR [O.O.V]
But I have to.

FLORENCE
This is it?
THE DOCTOR [O.O.V]
(Gently)
Yep. This is it.
FLORENCE
Then... goodbye doctor. Thank you.
Thank you, cos Ill remember you, I
will. I wont forget you, not ever.
Rvery time I sleep at night, every
child I see on the streets, theyre
only alive because of you! Youve
saved us so many times. So, thank
you...

Stand waiting for a moment, like you do, for him to reply.
He doesnt.
FLORENCE
Doctor?

THE DOCTOR [O.O.V]


Bye.
Beat.
For a moment, she just stands there, looking at it, the
TARDIS, one last time.
Remembering; thinking...
[V/O] from episode 4b.3, Where the freakish creatures play,
SOUND FX:
THE DOCTOR [V/O]
You leave the Tardis, now, walk out
those doors. You could have been so
much, with me, you could have seen
infinity, could have had so much
power, seen everything, and you
threw it all away!
Deep breath.

Then, she turns around. Head high.

(CONTINUED)

She can do this.


-Then, slowly, calmly, sadly-

-Walks away-
PULL AWAY to HIGH SHOT, behind, her back, as she walks away
FROM CAMERA, smaller, and smaller.

Further and further away. Then...


Gone.
PULL AWAY TO:

8 INT. TARDIS SCANNER -- DAY


This same image, REPEATED on the SCANNER, the edges just
visible, edge of FRAME.

PULL AWAY TO:

9 INT. TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM -- DAY

The DOCTOR, hunched over, watching this on the SCANNER, eyes


so close to the screen, longing, wet.
Stands up.
Sighs.

Flicks a switch.
SOUND FX: With the familiar dimensional trumpeting...
Gone.

FADE TO:

10 EXT. RAVENNA CITY - LOWER LEVELS -- DAY

Florence is walking towards a big, posh looking BUILDINGS:


nice, neo-classical facades, colonial type, green and white.
Walks up the big wide marble steps, towards the DOORS: big,
heavy, wooden, bolts, the works.

She looks at them, a bit puzzled: theres no handles, nor


knobs, no nothing... Eh?!?! Fiddles around a bit, pulling
pushing, prodding, but... no way in.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (2) 19.

Then, suddenly... zzzzz! A little SOUND FX: buzzing,


hissing, electronic sound, and out pops... AN ELECTRONIC EYE
STALK!
A bit like the one on the SS Madame De Pompadour, 2. 4, or
maybe star wars. Friendly, WALL-E. It looks, around, moving,
all rusty and brass.
Florence jumps back- what?- then looks around, feeling a bit
stupid, eyes still a bit wet.

FLORENCE

their own, opening inwards, revealing the pitch black
interior behind...

ALIEN P.O.V: Inside, pitch black. Cant see anything, but we
can still tell: This room is HUGE.Then, the doors creak
open, casting PRAC WHITE LIGHT into room, still not enough
to see anything. Silhouetted, Florence, quite far away:
other end of long chamber, for example.
FLORENCE
Hello? Hellloooooo? Anyone at home?
Im looking for the Ravenna city
um...airport?! Is this the right
place? The right time?
Little SNUFFLING, SNORTING SOUND, like mice rustling around
in the darkness.
FLORENCE
Hello? Whos there? I heard you,
yknow. Come out, come on...

ALIEN P.O.V: Keeping low, fast, clumsy, moving towards


Florence: Scuttling.
She can sense it, moves back.
FLORENCE
I dont mean any harm... I probably
couldnt do any harm if I wanted
to. Um... no weapons?
Then, the noise:

PRAC FX: Not just one, HUNDREDS of FOOTSTEPS, all moving


towards her, getting closer!!!

13 EXT. RAVENNA CITY - HIGHER LEVELS -- DAY


LOW SHOT: Were at about foot height [maybe even lower!]
looking up at...
HERO SHOT: THE DOCTOR!
Standing on the edge of... whatever it is, maybe a cliff, or
a balcony. With no sides. Looking straight in front of him,
terrifying, and powerful and omnipotent. Distant. Hurt. Sad.
PRAC FX: WIND, really strong, whipping through his clothes,
his coat, his tie, his suit, billowing them behind him.
Behind him, bit of a distance, the TARDIS, the doors open.

Hes standing on some sort of platform, obviously quite high


up, the floor is metal, sci-fi.
He just stares straight ahead, looking down. Meanwhile,
quiet, carried by the breeze, so he cant hear it:

14 INT. TARDIS - CONSOLE ROOM -- DAY


Same view, but from inside the TARDIS, by the console. The
doors are open, we can see the Doctor, his back to us, hands
in pockets. And in front of him, below him...
WIDE MATTE SHOT (CGI?): Huge vista of the city of Ravenna,
recognizable, architecture, stalls etc
But SO FAR DOWN! He must be hundreds of feet up, if not
thousands, literally amongst the clouds, some even below the
huge platform.
Then, suddenly, the Doctor changes his posture, cocks his
head, as if hearing:

FLORENCE (V.O)
Help!!
Then, he turns and RUNS towards CAMERA, fast!

And CAMERA is in/on TARDIS SCANNER!


The Doctor puts his hands on either side of the camera,
twiddles it, wiggles it around, side to side, frowning! Oh
no!

THE DOCTOR
(Whispers)
Florence!
CUT TO:

15 INT. GOVT OFFICE BUILDING -- DAY


ALIEN P.O.V: Once again, pitch black. But not quiet.
The snuffling, the moving, Florence shouting, but MUFFLED-
someone or something has its hand over her mouth.
Then, suddenly: The DOOR opens, with a GRRRRRRRINDING
Sudden rush of PRAC WHITE LIGHT, illuminates room, not much,
just a bit.

Silhouetted in the door... THE DOCTOR!


Beat.
No movement. All noise has stopped.

And then, Florence...

And we can see them! The GNAECIANS. like in Sc. 3, but a bit
different: Dirty, poor, bit of a mess. And, on their faces,
WICKER MASKS! Shaped like a strange animal horns, three
eyes- bit scary, bit disturbing.
Theres about fifty of them, crowded round. We can also see
the inside of the building: a bit palatial, fountains, stone
floors, even some plants [not native plants, recognizable
earth plants]. It really is a HUGE building.

The Shuffling/snuffling noise gets louder.


THE DOCTOR
Let there be light.

(Rough, coarse, deep voice)

masks, because they find it
unseemly to show our faces. We have

follow the human rulers into battle
and to die for them if they deem it
necessary. They burn our books,
destroy our datacores. Is that your
cultural diversity? We are a
workforce. We are slaves.
FLORENCE
Doctor, is it true? Is that right?
Humans? The empire? Slaves?

GNAECIAN #1
Not only that, they force us to
work the mines to extract the
precious metals and jewels of our
land. When these are exhausted,
they will have no use for us left.

THE DOCTOR
I left the TARDIS scanner on tuned
in to your bio-field, heard you
shouting.
FLORENCE

THE DOCTOR

WIDE SHOT: The city of Ravenna, and above it: A HUGE, really
MASSIVE upper city, balanced on top of huge POSTS.

These POSTS are MASSIVE, as wide as a house, a thousand of


them dotted through the city, and balanced on top, SO, SO,
high up, the UPPER CITY, above the clouds.
THE DOCTOR
(murmurs)
Like I said. The easy bit.
FLORENCE
(Flabbergasted)
What... What is it?

THE DOCTOR
When the humans arrived, they were
hardly gonna live amongst the plebs
were they?
GNAECIAN #1
They built it above our city. It
blocks all the light, and all the
rain. We have had a famine lasting
a hundred years. Our crops have
withered and died, our people
starved and died of thirst.
THE DOCTOR

with the consul.

FLORENCE
Is that where the spaceport is
going to be?
THE DOCTOR
Yep. Thats where youll find

FLORENCE

The Doctor walks up to one, waves at it.
Nothing happens.

And we cant see anything happen, but we can tell its gone.

18 EXT. RAVENNA CITY - HIGHER LEVELS -- DAY


A flat area of STEEL PLATFORM; part of the structure on
whoch the HIGHER CITY is built. All around are PICADILLY
CIRCUS STYLE ELECTRONIC ADVERTISEMENTS, swish BUILDINGS,
FLYING CARS.
But theres no-one there. No-one. All movement is automated,
robotic. Even a few bodies visible. Its empty, silent.

All of a sudden, with the same Whoooooshhhhhhh!!!


Florence, HERON and THE DOCTOR appear through the floor. All
look slightly dazed.
FLORENCE
Very high speed.
The Doctor straightens his tie, looks around.

For the first time we really get an idea of the size of this
platform: Its VAST. As far as the eye can see, and then
more; most of it bare, a landing strip.

Florence is outsidea high-tech, sci-fi TERMINAL-BUILDING,


completely round.
LOW ANGLE: She looks up at the huge building, and behind it
the SKY, so high up its turning black because of the edge
of the atmosphere.
Swallowing, she enters.
We follow.

PAN TO:

20 INT. SPACEPORT TERMINAL BUILDING -- DAY


NB: Although shes an outsider, because she looks human,
they dont question her.
Its very empty, because of the ion storm: the famine has
killed of all but a few of the humans.
Inside, everything is automated, all electronic, robots, the
works. Florence walks up to one, a two metre tall three
sided SHAPE, covered in screens showing the space shuttle
times, except all screens are blank, because of the Ion
storm, again. Its all deserted, layers of dust, lots of
dirt.

She approaches it; feeling a bit stupid.


HIGH SHOT: looking down, HAND-HELD CAM, ALIEN P.O.V?

like a barell. Eeek! Its face is like a helmet, shiny
metal, blue eyes, glowing: very Iron Man.
This is part of THE CURFEW, police-robot-fighters, working
for the humans.
THE CURFEW #1
Halt. Intruder. Prepare for
scanning.

It raises one arm, again, very MARVEL/SUPERHERO, points it


at her; a BIG-BONED BEAST OF A SCANNER!
Points it at her.

Then, the scanner speaks. That is SO weird, even Florence


cant help it but speak:

With that, he dramatically LEAPS onto the RECEPTION DESK!
On it is a little BELL, the small round ones you always
have.

HE picks it up, and gives it a good THUMPING!

Florence runs over to them, bit of a distance.
Doesnt notice: Theyre just standing there, staring
straight ahead; not even noticed her.

And their eyes; So cold.

SLOW MO:

EPIC HERO SHOT: Florence, so happy! RUNS towards John.


BCU: Great big SMILE on her face.
BCU: John. Not noticing.

Then, slowly, he turns his head, to look at her, and his


neck makes a CRACKKKK! like people with old bones do. Yuck!
John is in the middle, directly in front of the capsule!

Behind is a WALL OF FLAME, which is...


FX: Fire is being put out by FIRE-BOTS
Behind him, on either side, Harvey and Zurab.

Then, Florence reaches him, in his ORANGE SPACE SUIT and...


Gives him a GREAT BIG HUG!
CU: John: OS: Florence, still hugging. He has his arms
around her, but his face hasnt change. Doesnt register her
presence, doesnt look at her, just looks straight ahead.
Brrrr! Creepy!

SOME TIME LATER.

WIDE MATTE SHOT: Exactly the same spot John jumped off.
THE DOCTOR and Florence sitting on the edge, their legs
danging over the edge of that beautiful vista of the city

The SUN is SETTLING, a beautiful SUNSET.


They are HOLDING HANDS, not speaking, just looking,
thinking, remembering.
To hell with the CURFEW, THE VOICE, the rest of them. They
can wait.
And they just sit there, and look.
And think.

SLO-SLO, Pull away further and further, BEYOND CLOUDS, until


theyre just dots, so small, with such long shadows.
FADE TO:

30 EXT. RAVENNA CITY - HIGHER LEVELS - SPACEPORT -- DAY


WIDE MATTE SHOT: Getting late now, the SUN just about to
disappear completely, almost dark.
Florence is leaning against THE DOCTOR, he has his arms
round her: mourning together, both just so sad.
Hes not trying to say anything, not trying to make her feel
better; they know each other too well for that.
Then, something to distract them:

FX: CROWD MULTIPLICATION CURFEW: So, so, so, many CURFEW,


descending like a swarm towards the LOWER CITY, on nice,
sci-fi FLOATY HOVERBOARDS
They dont stop, just look at the Doctor and Florence,
ignore them, floating lower, and slowly, theyre...
Gone.
And then the SCREAMING begins.

The Doctor and Florence look at each other. Grim


determination. The Doctor clambers to his feet, dusts
himself down.

In the middle of the VILLAGE of the GNAECIANS. THE CURFEW


are causing havoc: DRAGGING people out of houses,
SLAUGHTERING innocent people.
In the middle of the SHACKS, HUGE BONFIRE, being constantly
fed by some curfew-guards, with BOOKS. More and more come
round from houses, carrying books, drop them on the fire.
Behind them, hiding, terrified, the GNEACIAN people, unable
to act, silhouetted by the blaze, or illuminate by the
flames.

A GNAECIAN WARRIOR steps foward, holding his SPEAR.


Stealthily, approaches one curfew, and then...
-STABS at it with his spear!-
-It does no good!-

-The curfew turns around-


-Raises his ARM-GUN!-
-The Gnaecian backs away, stammering-

FX: The Curfew fires!

FX: CROWD MULTIPLICATION: The CURFEW are retreating, on


their hoverboards, again utterly remorseless, leaving DEATH
and DESTRUCTION.
PRAC FX: Flames, Smoke, Burning Wrecks. The GNAECIANS are so
exhausted, cant even move to help themselves.
Then...
SOUNDLESS apart from

MUSIC: UPRISING, by MUSE.


HERO SHOT: THE DOCTOR and Florence STRIDE forwards, maybe
SLO-MO, walk towards the Gnaecians.
They look up sadly; friend or foe?

Still SLO-MO, The Doctor is clutching the body of HERON.


Puts it down on the ground. Bows his head.
Beat.

Hes on a mission. Him and Florence, still SLO-MO, oblivious


to the walls of fire, six stories high!
They walk amongst the Gnaecians, bend down, tending to the
WOUNDED. But more. WHISPERING in their ears, SPREADING THE
WORD. Pass it on; Inciting a revolution.

CU: The Doctor bends over an OLD GNAECIAN LADY, claps her
hand in his. Whispers something in her ear. His eyes are so
sad, but so angry. Full of fire.

self-confidence, arrogance. What a creep. We dont like him

maybe it was my fault, just a

citizens of the universe, for a

heavens.

FLORENCES P.O.V: Facing her... JOHN!


FX: But its not, quite. Hes a bit transparent, from
certain angles, and a blue-tinted; JOHN-MEMORY.
A Ghost.

But one thing is the same; the smile. He looks so happy and,
so sad at the same time.
Hes perched on one BRANCH of the tree, his legs dangling
down, swinging in the air, his arms crossed.

JOHN
Back from the dead. Just for you.
FLORENCE
That was the Doctor. His parting
gift to us. The tomb stone is made
of psycho-refractive metals. Taps
into your brain, your memories and
experiences. Brings you back.

He jumps down from the tree and walks towards her, straight
passed her, slightly transparent.
He hops up, sits on top of his tombstone.
JOHN
Brought me back just for you. I was
in the dark. The cold, black, dark.
A second lasted an hour, a year, an
eternity. I could feel time racing

past me, while I stood still. It
was so cold, so empty. Ive been
there. Felt it. Hated it. Except
then... I saw what wee fighting
for. What was worth it. Another
life. Another world. Like this one,
but... simple. Perfect. Heaven. A
place worth fighting for! Dying
for. And then, dyou know what? I
opened my eyes. From the dream.
There is no afterlife! But now Im
here. And Im not leaving you
again.

FLORENCE
(trying to change the subject)
The Doctor said there are whole
planets made from this. No-one
there ever dies. Just retires.
Every person whose ever lived is
preserved. And... Why did you kill
yourself? Why? How could you do
that?!
JOHN
To save you. And it was worth it.
If I could, Id do it again right
now. No regrets.
FLORENCE
(Smiles; she knew)
I love you.
JOHN
(So happy)
I know.

37 EXT. RAVENNA - WASTELAND -- DAY


LATER: Afternoon, long shadows.

HIGH SHOT: looking down at the hillside from so high up; the
tombstone, and lying on her back, looking up at us,
Florence, just thinking.
And, sitting, watching over her like a guardian angel;

FX: JOHN.

38 EXT. RAVENNA - WASTELAND -- NIGHT


LATER: DUSK, no natural light, but...
PRAC FX: The candle illuminates Florence, lying on the same
spot, and by her head, sitting on the floor, cross-legged,
not quite touching her...
FX: JOHN.
FADE TO:

39 EXT. RAVENNA - WASTELAND -- DAY


LATER: The next morning.

MUSIC: GOTTEN by SLASH.


Florence has fallen ASLEEP.
CLOSE: on Florence, from above. Stirring. Slowly, she yawns,
opens her eyes,looks around, sits up. Then she remembers.

Oh god. Because even though hes there, watching her...


Its not the same.
She slumps back down, until...

SOUND FX: The TARDIS engines, that famous sound, and...


FX: The TARDIS fades into existence, a bit quieter, less
theatrics, like its being respectful; observing the dead,
some distance away, down the hill.

The DOOR opens, the Doctor steps out, quiet, awkward, long
COAT, hands in pockets.
Walks up the hill, slowly. Like a pilgrimage.

Looks at her, so sad, so compassionate.


If anyone understands, its him.
She CLIMBS to her feet. Looks at him.

Smiles, sadly.
THE DOCTOR
Your staying?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (2) 64.

FLORENCE
Ive got to. He needs me.
THE DOCTOR
Then... I came to say goodbye.

FLORENCE
Thank you.
THE DOCTOR
It was great. And... Im sorry. So
sorry.
Watching this, JOHN.
JOHN
Go with him.

FLORENCE
I cant. Ive got you. Ive got to
look after you. You need me!
JOHN
He needs you
CU: John. It hurts him, but he nods to the Doctor.
JOHN
Just go. Ill still be here. Got no
choice now. For ever. Im immortal.
Eternal. Youre not. You dont want
to be stuck here with me.
FLORENCE
But I love you!

JOHN
Thats why Im saying this. I would
love you to stay. But I cant sit
and watch you grow older, and
weaker. Take the chance.
FLORENCE
Ill... Ill come back
JOHN
No you wont. And that is so right.
How it should be.
He can see her hesitating.

(CONTINUED)

JOHN
Go on. Please.

FLORENCE
Ill come back.
JOHN
(He nods; appeasing her guilt)
Course you will. Now go. Run. Dont
let him dissapear from your life.
Catch him. Hes worth it.
FLORENCE
Well take you with us.

JOHN
You cant. Move me, I die. But can
I have one last wish?
FLORENCE
What?

JOHN
Unplug me. Let me grdually break
down. I dont want to live for
ever. Im not a god. I just want
some peace.

THE DOCTOR
(Whered he come from?)
Join the club.

JOHN
Please?
THE DOCTOR
I cant. Im sorry, I cant.

JOHN
(We can see the pain in his
eyes)
Please!
FLORENCE
John. Im sorry, I just cant.
And she runs towards him, for a last, proper, GREAT BIG HUG
THE DOCTOR
No! You cant touch him!

Too late.
-She runs forward!-

(CONTINUED)

-As she meets him, he simply...


-FX: Hisss! John FADES away!!-
Final CU: John. Desperately sad. He doesnt want the
afterlife.

CU: Florence. CRYING. Properly sad. Shes lost him. Again.


JOHN (O.O.V)
Look after her Doctor. Look after
her.
FLORENCE
John? John?!
THE DOCTOR
Youve short circuited him. He
wont be back online for a few days
now.
All slow, gentle, sad. Two people getting to know each other
again.

THE DOCTOR
Are you okay?
FLORENCE
Yeah. Im fine.

Shes not.
THE DOCTOR
I could drop you off somewhere?

FLORENCE
Is that what you want?!
THE DOCTOR
(sad smile)
Course not. Im not strong enough
for that.
FLORENCE
I want to come with you.

The Doctor NODS.


She turns to take one look around. One last look.
FLORENCE
(smiles)
Bye John

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: (5) 67.

Then she walks into the TARDIS.


The Doctor follows, reflecting...
Pauses.

As though listening to something...


Sniffs a bit, and-
CU: the doctor. Terrified.

-Runs into the TARDIS-


-SLAMS the doors!!!-
Beat.

FX: Then, with the familiar dimensional trumpeting, the


TARDIS fades out of existence.
Gone.

Hold on the TOMBSTONE


FADE TO:

40 INT. PERFORMANCE ARENA -- DAY

And the SHOW draws to a close.


FX: For a few seconds, the FLOATY HOLOGRAM runs footage from
Sc 37-9, gradually PULLING AWAY.

Then, it draws to a close, the SINGING stops, and...


FX: The flickering, spooling image fades away.
The ALIENS stand up, and the APPLAUSE is deafening

XERISPHOD (O.O.V)
And we applaud the tragic tale of
the man who would sacrifice
everything, and sing the song of
two star reaching lovers, who
sailed through space. And John died
for love. Died for the truth. But
we still see him. On his hill,
unable to leave. Talking and
telling stories to our children.
FADE TO:

41 EXT. RAVENNA - WASTELAND -- NIGHT


FLASHBACK: JOHN, on the hill.
PRAC FX: Gale winds pound at the trees, the grass, the
flowers, but he stands there unaffected.
Staring up.
Alone.

XERISPHOD (V.O)(CONTD)
And sometimes, on a perfect night,
a quiet night, when the wind blows
in the right direction, you can see
him. Staring out, into space,
looking at the stars. Looking for a
release. Hes walked that hill
every day for one thousand years.
And still no-one comes. Still no
sign of the Doctor.
FADE TO:

42 INT. PERFORMANCE ARENA -- DAY


The APPLAUSE continues, deeafinng.

XERISPHOD (O.O.V)
But hell be out there, somewhere,
saving worlds and people. Its in
honor of him, and its only right,
that his song is sung for ever, and
should never stop. That was the
song of our liberator. That was the
song of the Doctor. But it was the
first of his two songs. He sang
here twice, he danced here twice,
and each time it ended in death.

And gradually, the SINGING starts again, the haunting, sad
