ELEMENTS OF LITERATURE
1. Authors Purpose: There are four basic reasons an author might choose to write:
1. to explain or inform.

3. to persuade.

2. to entertain.

4. to enlighten or reveal an
important truth.

2. Setting:
The storys setting is where and when the events take place.
3. Characters:
A character is a person, an animal, or an imaginary creature that takes part in the
action of a story.
4. Plot :
Plot is the action of a story. It is the series of related events that the author
describes from the beginning of the story to the end. Most plots follow a
chronological order. In other words, they proceed in the order in which the
events happen.
5. Point of View :
.

First-person Point of View: in the first-person point of view, the story is told by
one of the characters. The character uses pronouns such as I or we and usually
participates in much of the action.
Third-person Point of View: in the third-person point of view, the story is told by
a narrator who is not a character in the story. (Pronouns such as she, he, and they
are used when writing in third-person point of view)

6. Theme:
A writers message, or main point, is the theme of his or her literary work. Looking for
a theme helps you look more deeply into the literature and makes for more
enjoyable reading.

Who is Charles Dickens?

Charles Dickens was a famous British novelist, perhaps best known for
works such as "Oliver Twist".
Born on 7 February 1812, Dickens was heavily influenced by his own
difficult childhood.
At age 22, Dickens joined a London newspaper as a journalist,
publishing articles in the Monthly Magazine.
Dickens became known for his themes of social injustice and poverty.
Oliver Twist is the story of a young orphan boy who reflects the life of
poverty in England in the 1830's.
Oliver Twist is a story about the battles of good versus evil, with the evil
continually trying to corrupt and exploit the good.
