Counting and Cardinality
Know number names and the count sequence.

Step #2 Review Vocabulary
a. What is a number? What is a Hippo? What is a digit? Where did we start counting from?
Students will work in pairs to discuss the questions above after a minute teacher will bring
back students attention and have a group discussion.
b. Teacher listens to students responses.
Step #3 Number Demonstration
a. Students will demonstrate how the number of gumballs requested by the teacher using a
number flip card. In each table students will have 20 different gumballs and will work
together as a group to count the correct number of gumballs requested by teacher.
b. Teacher will walk around as students are working together to count the number of gumballs.
Step #4 Putting it all together (worksheet)
a. Students will work independently on a worksheet where they will place different colored
circular stickers representing gumballs.
b. Teacher will work independently with struggling students in a small group setting.
B. APPLICATION ACTIVITY (Practice and/or Reflection): Students will fill in the numbers
written on the board by teacher, in their journals.
