Biodiversity, the Next Challenge for Financial Institutions?
A scoping study to assess exposure of financial institutions to biodiversity
business risks and identifying options for business opportunities
Mulder, Ivo
While the business case for climate change is now widely recognized, the business case for
biodiversity has only to a limited extent been addressed. “Biodiversity”, or the ecosystem
services that support our way of life, are becoming the next challenge for financial
institutions.
This report focuses on the specific implications of exposure to biodiversity business risks
for the commercial banking sector, asset managers and investors, and (re)insurance firms.
It provides an overview of available tools and best management practices to enable financial
institutions to mitigate any adverse impacts proactively. The report also identifies a number
of biodiversity business opportunities for financial institutions that make both financial as
well as conservation sense. A number of recommendations are presented to the financial
sector, as well as to other stakeholders, such as NGOs, governments and multilateral
institutions on how to further build and communicate the business case for biodiversity to
the financial community.

BIODIVERSITY
The Lao People’s Democratic Republic lies at the heart of the Mekong
River basin. It is rich in natural resources including water, wetlands,
forests and biodiversity. Managing these resources sustainably is
essential to meeting its development objectives of reducing poverty
while promoting economic growth. Although the upper Mekong
River is internationally recognized as important for biodiversity, including large, endangered
migratory fish species such as the Giant Catfish, there is currently very little information
about the status of these resources. This report is a synthesis of the findings and key points
of discussion drawn from three years (2003–2005) of monitoring and assessment, and
identifies key areas of concern that require further monitoring and assessment as well as
making recommendations for future work.

MANAGEMENT
The Green Belt of Europe: from Vision to Reality
The Iron Curtain, running from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea,
divided Europe for almost 40 years and no activity was allowed in
this “forbidden” zone. When it fell in 1989, it left a strip of land that
runs the entire length of Europe and that has remained comparatively
undisturbed – a green belt. The Green Belt initiative aims to integrate
this entire strip of land with its key habitats and ecological areas as
part of an international network of valuable ecosystems. This book provides background
information on the initiative, reviews current activities in a number of case studies and
looks at how the initiative can fit into current and future global efforts to protect European
biodiversity.

This book seeks to: 1. examine the political, economic, cultural, and ecological dimensions
of food sovereignty; 2. generate and exchange technically informed and practically applicable
knowledge; and 3. provide an interactive space for the formation of cross-cultural alliances
between the USA and Latin America among academics and practitioners. It grew out of
a unique workshop at Yale University on “Food Sovereignty, Conservation, and Social
Movements for Sustainable Agriculture in the Americas”. In this book, the organizers have
synthesized the proceedings, expanded on insights derived there, and provided concrete
recommendations to academics, policy makers, farmers’ movements, and other audiences.

FORESTS
The Forest Landscape Restoration Handbook
In this groundbreaking text, forest quality is discussed as a useful new concept in forest
conservation and management. Three main assessment criteria are used: authenticity,
environmental benefits, and social and economic benefits. A methodology and protocol for
collecting and analysing data is described, and the approach needed with each indicator is
outlined in detail. A landscape approach to assessment is advocated, as meeting conservation
goals also means addressing human needs, and balancing the trade-offs involved is only
possible at a landscape scale. Assessment is demonstrated in a series of case studies from
Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America, showing how this method can be used in many
ways to help forest conservation management.

Rehabilitation and Restoration of Degraded Forests (Chinese version)
Large areas of the world’s forests have been lost or degraded and landscapes everywhere
are being simplified by current land-use practices. This publication presents approaches
to restoring and rehabilitating the vast areas of degraded, fragmented and modified forests
around the world. The authors argue that by applying best practice at the site level it is
possible to enhance socio-economic and ecological gains at the landscape level. It is an
important contribution towards the objectives of the Forest Landscape Restoration approach
and essential reading for practitioners and decision makers involved in forest restoration.

Evaluación de Impacto Ambiental Transfronteriza en Centroamérica:
Lineamientos Generales

An Introduction to the African Convention on the
Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources
Introduction à la Convention africaine sur la conservation
de la nature et des ressources naturelles
The ABS Series is the first “subseries” within the EPLP series, designed to maximize the
usefulness and accessibility of writings to the broad range of participants addressing the
ABS challenge at both national and international levels. It offers a real contribution towards
progress on an issue which has, up to now, been stymied both by its complexity and by
its controversial nature. It is only through the understanding of those complexities that
consensus and useful compromise can be attained that will resolve the controversies and
enable a functional system for achieving the all-important equity objective of the CBD.
This book provides a systematic analysis of the requirements of access law, both the CBD
requirements and the basic requirements of enforceable legislation. Often key legal issues
16
that have a significant impact on enforceability of ABS agreements are not addressed in
national legislation, therefore, this book addresses these issues with the aim to recognize
and understand the nature of the legal impediments that must be addressed for the drafting
of functional ABS legislation. Although the book is premised on the issues of access, it
inevitably refers to corresponding issues of benefit sharing that are relevant for articulating
the legal principles that inform a functional ABS system. Its conclusions look at particular
legal concepts that, if accepted, could form the basis for functional ABS systems that respond
to the identified concerns.

Fewer than 11% of CBD Parties have adopted substantive ABS law,
and nearly all of these are developing countries, focusing almost entirely
on the ‘access’ side of the equation. Most of the CBD’s specific ABS
obligations, however, relate to the other side of the equation – benefit
sharing. This book considers the full range of ABS obligations, and
how existing tools in user countries’ national law can be used to achieve the CBD’s third
objective. It examines the laws of those user countries which have either declared that their
ABS obligations are satisfied by existing national law, or have begun legislative development;
the requirements, weaknesses and gaps in achieving benefit-sharing objectives; and the ways
in which new or existing legal tools can be applied to these requirements.

Current discussions over the “Certificate of Origin, Source and Legal Provenance” include
the legal and practical implications associated with tracking the flow of genetic resources.
Knowing what is where, how it got there, and whether conditions and restrictions were
complied with, is a critical aspect if an ABS regime is to be effective in its implementation.
This book provides insights into options and components for the development of a
national/international system for the tracking and monitoring of genetic resources to ensure
compliance with the ABS provisions of the CBD. It includes discussions addressing the
practical options for such a system, its costs and economic impacts, and its possible role in
the ABS framework.

Contracts relating to scientific/technical development are effective only where they are
enforceable or valid under relevant law, can be practically implemented by the Parties, and
address matters arising from the relevant scientific/technical issues and practices. Negotiators
are often hampered by their lack of knowledge of contract law (and special legal concerns
in the country in which users are located), and of the bio-technological techniques used to
derive new molecules and genes or genetic or biochemical formulae from biological samples.
This lack of knowledge means they may not make the best choices on behalf of their country,
community or institution. This book examines the special issues in applying contract law
to the rights to take and utilize genetic resources; and the scientific issues and the manner
LAW
The most difficult and least-addressed ABS implementation issue is that of coverage. On
the one hand, the CBD’s ABS provisions appear to give every country full rights over all
genetic resources found in the country, even if the exact subspecies or variety is also found
in other countries. On the other hand, however, even within a single country, each biome
may be separately regulated, and each community or landowner may be given the right to
control access to and receive benefits for the genetic resources of every specimen taken from
their land or sold by them. This book will analyse the basic concept of ABS, examining
the overall mechanisms that could be used to make the system work internationally. It also
documents the overall conclusions and analytical results of The ABS Project which have not
been incorporated in its other primary publications, focusing on the questions that remain
open and identifying some points of concern or oversight.

This report reveals recent discoveries about the beauty, value and
vulnerability of life in the deep seas and in the open ocean. It explores
what these astonishing findings mean for current ocean governance, what
the impacts are of present and potential human activities, and what can
be done to promote effective and sustainable management of the riches of
the deep and open oceans. The ecosystems and species described herein
do not adhere to man-made boundaries; many exist within national
jurisdiction as well as in the high seas and seabed “Area”. It is hoped that this report will provide
a common basis of knowledge to stimulate action by states and the global community.

Coral reefs are vital ecosystems, providing a source of income, food and coastal protection for
millions of people. Pollution, habitat destruction, disease and unsustainable fishing have led
to declines in reef condition throughout the world. Added to this, the threat of mass coral
bleaching has recently emerged, causing extensive coral mortality to nearly every coral reef
region. Efforts have now begun to improve the prospects of coral reefs by identifying resilient
areas, enhancing their protection, and implementing strategies to support ecosystem resilience.
This guide brings together the latest scientific knowledge and management experience to
assist managers in responding effectively to mass coral bleaching events, providing pragmatic,
science-based suggestions for adaptive management in this time of change.

The fifth in the series of CORDIO Status Reports, this publication will reflect the evolution
of the CORDIO project in response to the mass mortality of corals in the Indian Ocean
in 1998, a direct consequence of climate change and rising sea surface temperatures. The
contents of the publication intend to show there is no single way to adapt to climate change,
no uniform outcome that affects all places in the same way. Each community, research
institution, country and sub-region in the publication expresses variations on the reality of
degradation as a result of climate change interacting with other local threats, and variations
in possible outcomes and how to respond to these. The reader should gain a sense of the
immense scope of change that ecosystems and people are facing, and the urgent need to
respond from local to global levels to take steps to constrain and minimize the rate of
climate change.

Many of the areas most important for conserving biodiversity are occupied by poor people, or
have poor people living around them. Hence, the complex relationship between poverty and
protected areas can no longer be ignored. This book presents a balanced perspective on how
protected areas relate to poverty, in both positive and negative ways. On the one hand, protected
areas deliver multiple benefits to the people living around them, ranging from tourism to crop

Estimating the Value of Ecotourism in the Djoudj
National Bird Park in Senegal
Sometimes boundaries make geographical sense; other times they are straight lines, imposed
by colonial powers centuries ago. Today, territorial integrity is a founding principle of the
relations between governments, but even so, boundary conflicts are still unresolved in many
parts of the world. This book demonstrates how transboundary conservation initiatives
can help to defuse boundary conflicts, and sometimes even solve them, and discusses
management and security considerations that should be foremost in the minds of those
responsible for transboundary conservation areas.

The World’s Protected Areas: Status, Values and Prospects in the 21st Century
Extensively illustrated with maps, colour photographs, and graphics, this state-of-the-art
reference book offers a comprehensive and authoritative status report on the world’s 100,000
parks, nature reserves, and other land and marine areas currently designated as protected areas.
Covering over 12% of the Earth’s land surface, protected areas are the great strongholds of
biodiversity and landscape conservation. They also provide a wide range of valuable ecosystem
services: protecting food and water supplies; regulating weather patterns; protecting watersheds
and coastlines from erosion; maintaining places of historical or cultural significance for
recreation; generating income and employment, and more. This publication describes what
protected areas have and have not accomplished, what threats they face, and how they can be
better managed to achieve the goals of conserving biodiversity and other natural resources.

BEST PRACTICE GUIDELINES SERIES
This series is designed to address key issues facing protected areas around the world. It
is intended for all those concerned with protected area policy and practice: practitioners,
political decision makers, NGOs, academics and international funding agencies. The
series was originally developed and published in partnership with the Department of City
and Regional Planning, Cardiff University (volumes 1 12). While each of the first twelve
volumes received some seed funding support from Cardiff, each was separately funded
from a range of other sources as well. Beginning with volume 13, the series is published
in partnership with the James Cook University and Rainforest CRC, Australia.

ACTION PLANS
AND OCCASIONAL PAPERS
The Specialist Groups in the IUCN Species Survival Commission publish in-depth reports
on the conservation status of particular species or groups of species. These Action Plans
assess the current situation of species throughout their habitats and – most importantly
– lay out the necessary steps for their protection. The strength of the Action Plan format is
in its combination of species overviews and the clear delineation of conservation priorities.
The Occasional Paper series of publications focuses on a variety of diverse species
conservation topics, in particular, proceedings of important meetings.

Amphibian populations are disappearing all around the world and we are only just beginning
to grasp the scale of the situation. Around a third of amphibian species are threatened with
extinction – mass extinctions of this magnitude have not been seen since the time of the
dinosaurs. Traditional threats to species and ecosystems – such as habitat loss and pollution
– are being compounded by new threats such as climate change and emerging disease. This
is not simply an amphibian problem, but a human welfare issue. We need to act quickly to
save the amphibians, as well as the ecosystems that support them and provide us with clean
drinking water, clean air, and support the quality of life that many take for granted.

Blanc, Julian J.; Barnes, Richard F.W.; Craig, G.C.; Dublin, H.T.; Thouless, C.R.;
Douglas-Hamilton, Ian; Hart, J.A.
The African Elephant Database is a spatial database used to store, manage, analyze and
disseminate information on the distribution and abundance of elephant populations on the
African continent, in order to provide a current and accurate picture of the status African
elephants. Elephants are the largest living land mammals, and their potential impact on their
habitats raises important management issues both for protected areas and unprotected land.
This Status Report is rich in data and information on numbers, distribution and current
issues, and provides continent-wide information that is vital for conservation. It will help
wildlife management authorities to harmonize their policy and management decisions across
regions, as well as the continent, to reduce conflict and relax the pressure on habitats.

Trade and travel are the primary drivers of biological invasion both into and within the
United States, and prevention measures have been identified as the most cost-effective means
of minimizing the introduction and impact of invasive species. A recognized gap in the US
government’s knowledge of the role that trade has played in the introduction of invasive
species into the US led to a study undertaken by the US Environmental Protection Agency’s
Office of International Affairs and IUCN. The aim was to identify the resources, strategies,
and policies necessary to create, maintain, and make accessible one or more commodity/
invasive species databases that EPA and other relevant agencies can apply to trade policy
decision making in a timely and scientifically-based manner.

WETLANDS AND WATER
The IUCN Water & Nature Initiative (WANI 2001–2007) has worked with 80+ partner
organizations across the world to demonstrate water management that supports healthy
rivers and communities.
A toolkit series has been developed under WANI to support learning how to mainstream
an ecosystem approach into water resource management. Aimed at practitioners, policy
makers and students, the series builds on practical case studies to show how key
principles of sustainable water management are implemented in river basins. The current
toolkits cover the management of flows, governance, economics and incentives, and
adaptation to climate change. The series continues to grow and will be complemented
by the publication of a comprehensive WANI Synthesis book in 2009.

Have you ever heard of cloud forests? These intriguing ecosystems only represent 2% of
the world’s tropical forests. And yet, they are important treasure houses of biodiversity
and suppliers of large volumes of high-quality stream-flow. However, these cloud forests
are among the most threatened forest ecosystems in the work. In this film scientists try
to unravel the secrets of these amazing ecosystems and understand how forest protection
works in Costa Rica.

Tales of Water: a Child’s View
Anema, Taco
Water is both the most ordinary and extraordinary of resources; without it, nothing can
survive. Yet, 1.1 billion people around the world do not have ready access to clean water
and more than 2.6 billion people lack basic sanitation. During his travels around the world,
to five continents and 15 nations, Dutch photographer Taco Anema listened to the voices
of children telling their stories about the importance of water. In this magical journey seen
through the fresh and spontaneous eyes of children, the focus is on the wonder of water, its
power, and its beauty. Let the children inspire us to take action for a better and sustainable
world for all!

Drawing on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the world’s most objective and
authoritative inventory of species at risk of extinction, this publication combines awe-
inspiring imagery with solid science and factual accounts. The result of a collaboration
between industry and science, this dramatic new work conveys to the general public the
urgency and scale of the current extinction crisis. It describes the extinction process, its
causes, and the measures needed to reverse it in terms accessible to everyone. More than
simply raising awareness, this book is a call for action to all sectors of society from industry
to governments to educators, to work together to save biological diversity. Conserving this
diversity is one of the greatest challenges facing mankind today and we hope this book will
help inspire more people to take up that challenge.

The Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forests:
The Americas
Harcourt, Caroline S.; Sayer, Jeffrey; Billington, Clare, eds.
The threats to the forests of tropical America have been the centre
of international environmental concern for some time, yet the
material in this atlas highlights the continuing extent of scientific
uncertainty over the critical issues that will determine the future use
and conservation of these forests. Preceded by Asia and the Pacific,
1991; Africa, 1992 (both now out of print), this atlas completes the
series. Part I examines the obstacles to protection of tropical forests and outlines a plan to
counter problems such as colonization, exploitation of natural resources, and illegal trade
in forest species. Part II presents an in-depth study of the forests in each country of the
Caribbean, Central and South America. This research is gathered together in detailed colour
maps, photos, and concise tables illustrating the development of each area. For students,
researchers, and activists, the atlas will prove an invaluable guide through this still largely
uncharted territory

This book aims to present the state of the world’s deserts, their peoples and their wildlife
and also provides a basis for action. It reveals the beauty of desert landscapes and their
ecology, and the cultures of the desert peoples. It examines the impact of the changes in
global climate and the effects of recent catastrophes. The extensive atlas section of the book
maps the world’s deserts region by region, charting their growth, agricultural development
at their margins, the locations of resources, and pattern of human settlement.

World Conservation / Planète conservation /
Conservación mundial
World Conservation has been published in various forms for more than 50 years. Until
the arrival of the Internet, it was the main source of Union news and information for IUCN
members. With more than 50 IUCN websites and hundreds of newsletters, journals and
updates coming from different parts of the Union, World Conservation has now evolved
to examine some of the broader issues of conservation, development, economics and
society in the 21st century.
However, World Conservation remains, as always, a voice for the Union’s member
organizations, Commissions, staff, partners and friends. In the months and years to come
we hope that the magazine will become a place to air a wide variety of views, controversial
or consensual, and to stimulate debate.
Accountability is a buzzword of the 21st century. But what does it mean to the NGOs,
scientists, governments and companies in our conservation community? The first issue
of World Conservation 2007 takes a look at how the pressure for greater accountability
is playing out in the areas of environment and development. Are demands for good
governance and transparency fundamentally changing the way governments, the private
sector and NGOs operate? What more needs to be done, and who is responsible for
driving the necessary changes? This issue shows how an elusive concept is translating
into some tangible changes.
International attention to the energy crisis is heightening by the day. While the
planet indisputably heats up, so does the energy debate. The second issue of World
Conservation looks at the role of energy in sustainable development and the importance of
biodiversity. We cover the energy chain from producers to consumers; rich to poor; low
tech to high tech.
The third issue, to be published in January 2008, will explore diversity – how natural
diversity underpins the world’s social fabric, cultural diversity and economic progress.
