as a junior she averaged 6 points and 7 rebounds. Senior guard Hailey Pylkas is also a two-year working on This prevarsity player. The last two years she came off the bench and this year as a senior she will move into
a starting role. Hailey is one of the toughest and best defenders on the team. She will also be the
teams emotional leader. Sophomore point guard Makayla Ardis is in her second varsity season. She
started every game as a freshman at point guard averaging 10.4 points per game while earning allconference and all-area honors. As a freshman she played like a veteran who was very confident
on the floor. I have already seen a great deal of growth in her game in the first couple weeks of practice. Sophomore Forward Lindsey Pylkas came off the bench last year as a freshman and gained
a ton of experience playing behind a couple of seniors. This year she has moved into a bigger role
and will play some guard and forward.
newcomers Junior guard Maddie Pedlar, junior center Taelee Winklemann, junior forward
Kylie Branscombe, sophomore forward Kaitlyn Booms. Maddie, Taelee, Kylie and Kaitlyn all saw a
lot of minutes on the JV last season and will continue to have roles on varsity. All four will come off
the bench. Maddie, a solid defensive player, will be able to back up a couple of different guards.
Kaitlyn, a sophomore who also hangs her hat on defense, will back up the forwards. Taelee and
Kylie, both tall aggressive centers, will play behind Maggie Thom at center. Freshman guards Rylie
Bisballe and Emma Elmquist are both making the jump from Middle School to varsity and so far they
have looked good doing it. Both players are very confident and fit right in with the older girls. I think
as the season progresses these two will do some real nice things for us. Rylie will play both inside and
out while Emma will primarily be a guard.

strengths This group has great work ethic. They are very
coachable and willing to put the TEAM first. So our greatest
strength this year is going to be our team chemistry and confidence in one another. We have some vocal leaders this year
that we havent had in the past and it is really showing in practice already. These leaders understand for us to be successful
we need everyone talking, rebounding, running the floor and
playing together.

working on We will be working on all phases of the

game to start the season, but we will really focus on our offense and rebounding these first three weeks. Im a defensive
coach so that is hard for me to say, but we need to fix some
things offensively before we concentrate on our defense.
style The fans will see a team that works extremely hard
and plays the game the right way. We will play mostly manto-man defensively, and we will press a lot more than in years
past. Offensively, we will push the ball and take quality shots.
Our team is very unselfish so they will be fun to watch.
conference McBain will be the favorite. The rest of the
league will be very competitive and time will tell how the conference standings will play out. We have a lot of great coaches and players in our league. It should be another fun year.
goals Our No. 1 goal is to improve each and every day. If
we do that, our other goals will take care of themselves.

returnees Senior guard Dion Stanley will lead our back-

court and is a great leader for our younger players. Senior guar,
Kaitlyn Vogelaar will continue to shine as a good outside threat
and will make positive contributions on and off the court. Senior center,Kate Vander Lugt will continue to be a leader for our
younger players and will make our post players better each day.
Junior center Haley Taylor will continue to improve and cause a
presence for us in the middle.
newcomers Sophomore forward Louise Mackeprang;
Freshman forward Brianna Puffer; Freshman center Molly Lane;
Freshman guard Abby Brown; and Freshman guard Jaden Wilder
strengths We are a guard-oriented team and will look to
have an up-tempo style. We will need to utilize our speed not only
on offense but defense, as well. We also have packages to slow

things down and be a more balanced team if needed.

working on We have five new players, so we are working on team chemistry and gelling more as a team. Because of
our youth, we tend to settle and will need to be more patient on
offense.
style We want to create a fun atmosphere at our games by
being a fast up-tempo team. Our fans should see a hard-working
defensive team that is physical and communicates well.
conference This year will be competitive in the conference and is too close to predict who will win it. The team that
stays healthy and is hot at the right time will have the best chance
at winning the conference.
goals Our team goal is to become better teammates and
basketball players after every practice. We want to compete for

accomplishments Last years team, led by Coach has not had a lot of win/loss success, over the last few years,

Brian Miller, won the 2015-16 Top 100 Sportsmanship Award.

The award is voted on by the officials, and given to the top

fans and community, will continue displaying great sportsmanship throughout the season.

on them, to lead the team all season. Junior Kelly Fischer and

returnees McBain returns three seniors and four juniors
from last years 2015-2016 team that went 26-0 before losing in
the Class C Final Four. Two of last years top scores Logan Eling,
5-11 guard and Craig Sterk, 6-7 Forward/Center bring back
valuable experience and offense as they both enter their third
year on varsity. Logan Taylor, senior 5-11 guard brings back
experience at the guard and point guard position as well. The
seniors will be looked upon to show leadership every day in
practice and in games. Juniors Michael Heuker Jr.6-2 guard/
forward, Jarrett Koopman 6-2 guard/forward, Nicolas Rodenbaugh 6-2 guard/forward, and Seager Wiltzer 5-10 point
guard were brought up as sophomores last year and worked
their butts off every day in practice gaining valuable experience

and mental toughness in preparation to contribute this year!

They will be counted heavily if this team is going to successful.
newcomers Other juniors coming up from a J.V team
that finished 17-3 include Alex Utecht 5-10 guard, Andy Sikkema 6-1 forward, Brett Kamphouse 5-9 guard, Ethan Clark 59 guard, from Georgia and Michael DeRuiter 6-1 forward. All
of them will work hard everyday to improve and to contribute.
Sophomores Justin Kamphouse 5-10 guard and Garrett Verberkmoes 6-3 forward/center will look to provide depth and
gain experience as the season unfolds.
strengths As with teams in McBains past that have been
successful, experience from players that have been on varsity
for two, three or four years will be necessary to teach young
players the process of playing great defense, rebounding and
working together offensively as one team to win regardless of
who shines that particular night! Depth, size, athleticism and experience along with having been playing in the same system
should be a strength.

returnees McBain returns seven seniors from last years successful 2015-2016 team beginning with two senior starters Michaela Koopman, a 5-9 forward/center, and senior Samantha
VanHouten, a 5-10 guard/forward. These two young ladies have been on the varsity for three
years and each will be counted on for their toughness, experience and leadership. Shelby Whitt, a
5-5 senior guard, was also a key starter on last years team and is just a tough minded defender
with great quickness. Seniors Sarah Mayle, a 5-8guard/forward, Allyssa Johnson, a 5-8 guard/
forward, Gretchen Koster, a 5-9 forward/center, and Megan Kamphouse, 5-8 guard/forward,
all played some significant minutes throughout last year and are experienced, fundamentally
sound and should figure in key roles for McBain this season if we are to be successful. Another key
returnee is junior Charity Ingleright, a 5-8 point guard, with two years of varsity experience already;
