Study Guide for 2nd nine weeks QPA 2014-2015

Name:_________________________
EE1. Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions
with rational coefficients. Remember that you can only add and subtract like terms (variables
raised to the same power).

4(2a 3) 2(-3a 2.1)

Rewrite the problem using the additive inverse
4(2a + -3) + -2(-3a + -2.1)
Distribute the number with sign to all numbers in the
parenthesis.
42a + 4(-3) + -2 (-3a) + -2(-2.1)
Now multiply. Apply integer rules:
8a + (-12) +
6a + 4.2
Use commutative and associative properties to
combine the like terms
[8a + 6a] + [-12 + 4.2]
Add or subtract
14a + (-7.8)
Simplify the signs
14a 7.8
Simplified expression
1. 4x + 2 3x + 5 2(x +5)
+ 4y 9

2. 4x 3 + 2x + 3(x + 2)

4. 3(2x 5) + 6(3x 1)

5.

3
5 (15k 20)

3. -3(x + 2) 3

6.

2.7m

+ 0.4m + 2.5x + 1.67x

Factor; find the greatest common factor first. For our example it is 8. Put the GCF
outside the parenthesis. Divide all terms by the GCF. Put the quotient inside the
parenthesis. 16a2 24 factored becomes 8(2a2 3).
7.

( 15a2 + 25 5b)

8.

(20a 16)

9. (12a 144)

EE2: Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light on the
problem and how the quantities in it are related.

10. A rectangle has a width of 2x + 6 and a length of 7x 4. Write an expression for

finding the perimeter. Simplify the expression . To find the perimeter add all the sides
or 2(length + width).
11. Bob and Alex exercise at the same gym. The expression 15x 12 represents the
amount of time that Bob spent exercising last week. The expression 13x -15 represents
the amount of time that Alex exercised. Write an expression and simplify the total
amount of time that both boys exercised. (Combine like terms.)
EE3: Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational
numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically.

12. Kevin spent

of his $100 birthday gift on shoes. How much did he spend on

shoes? How much did he NOT spend on shoes?

13.

If d is the number of dimes that Libby has, what does .10d represent?

14. The length of a rectangle is 10 more than its width, w. Write an expression that
represents the perimeter of the rectangle.
15. Simplify this expression using order of operations. Then simplify using distributive
property. Explain how they are different. Which was easier for you and why? 3(20 + 3)
16. Tim worked in the concession stand at school and only sold hamburgers. His
teammate Patrick sold 4 hotdogs, 3 hamburgers, and 2 drinks. The hamburgers were
$3.00 each, the hotdogs were $2.00 each, and the drinks were $1.00 each. If the two
boys combined sold $37.00, how many hamburgers did Tim sell?
EE4: Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple
equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.

17. An inchworm is crawling up a tree. It begins 18 inches above the ground and climbs
up 3 inches every minute. Let t represent the number of minutes since the worm began
climbing. Timothy wants to know when the inchworm will be more than 60 inches above
the ground. Write and solve an inequality to model this situation
18. At the fair 25 food tickets cost $31.25. What is the cost of each ticket? Write an
equation and solve it.
19.
On Friday, Ben checked out 30 videos from the library. This is 8 more than twice
the number of videos he checked out last week. How many videos did Ben check out
last week?
20. A newborn baby is 20 inches tall. If the baby grows 2.5 inches a year, how many
years will it take for the baby to reach a height of 40 inches?
Solve and graph the equation on a number line.
21. 6 x -15
22. 24 > -3x + 6

23. 5x + 4 19

24. Ann earns 1.5 times her normal hourly pay for each hour that she works over 40
hours in a week? Last week Ann worked 51 hours and earned $378.55. What is her
normal hourly pay?
25. Bill needs at least $210 to buy a new cell phone. He already saved $60 and is
saving $20 per week. Write and solve an inequality that represents how long it takes
him to save enough money to purchase the phone.
26. A plumber charges $40 plus $20 an hour to repair a broken pipe. Mr. Smith only
budgeted $265 for the plumber. Write and solve an inequality that represents the
number of hours the plumber can work on Mr. Smiths broken pipes.
27. A 3 border is put around an 8 x 10 picture. Draw it out and decide what size
picture frame you need.

28. What integer would represent 240 above sea level?

240 below sea level?
What expression would represent descending at a rate of 15 feet per minute?
Ascending 15 feet per minute?
Solve.
29. 27.5 = 5x 2.5
= -12

30.

2(x 6) + 3 = -1

31. -3(x 6) 6

RP1: Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas, and other quantities measured in like
or different units.

32. Elaine is making a fruit mix. Elaines recipe calls for 6 parts dried pineapple to 4
parts dried mango. If Elaine needs 30 cups of fruit mix, how many cups of dried
pineapple will she need?

33. Donna is making pillows for her bedroom. She bought 7 2

yards of material for

Answers
1) x - 3
2)

9x + 3

3) -3x + 4y - 18
4) 24x 21
5) 9k 12

13) How much money Libby has

or the value in dollars
14) 4w + 20
15) 3(20 + 3) = 3 23 = 69 using
order of operations because we must
work what is inside the parenthesis
first.

10) 18x + 4

3(20 + 3) = 3 20 + 3 3 = 60
+ 9 using distributive property
because 3 must be multiplied by
each term inside the parenthesis.
For this problem I found distributive
property quicker but it would
depend on the problem.

11) 28x 27

16) Tim sold 6 hamburgers

12) $40; $60

17) 18 + 3t > 60; t > 14

7) 5(3a2 + 5 b)
8) 4(5a - 4)
9) 12(a -12)

18)
