Anne Frank Essay Outline

Step 1: Finish reading the play and make sure you have at least five SRE statements
written on your Collecting Evidence worksheet (yellow). If you dont have that
complete, go back and finish it before continuing with Step 2.
Step 2: Review your Collecting Evidence worksheet. Choose THREE characteristics
that make Anne an optimist and write them down, in SRE Format below:
For example:
Anne is hopeful because she is confident that they will eventually be freed from
the Nazis control so she tries to have fun and encourages others to do the same. For
example, on lines 898-904 we read that Anne says You know were going to forget
how to dancewhen we get our we wont remember a thing. (she starts to sing and
dance to herself. Mr. Frank takes her in his arms, waltzing with her).
o
Notice that in the example there is a statement, reason, and example to prove to
you that Anne is hopeful.
o
Also notice that I am citing my evidence, or providing the reader with the
information on where they can find the quote I use. YOU NEED TO CITE YOUR SOURCE
by telling me the lines or page numbers that I can find the quotes you are using.

Your turn:
Anne is ___________________________________ because ____________________
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________. For example,
____________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________

Anne is ___________________________________ because ____________________

_________________________________________________________. For example,
____________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________.
Step 3: Your SRE Formatted responses will become the body paragraphs for your essay.
Now we need to work on writing the introduction (which includes a hook and your thesis
statement) and the conclusion (which begins with a transition word/phrase, has a topic
sentence, summarizes the key points of your essay, and restates your thesis
statement).

Introduction:
o Hook: _________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________.
o Background Information (who is Anne Frank, why is she important,
which time period did she live in, what is in her diary, why is she
famous, etc.)
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
________________
o Thesis statement: The play The Diary of Anne Frank ends with
the statement In spite of everything, I still believe that
people are really good at heart. Anne may have felt this
way during her ordeal because she is __________________________,
___________________________, and _____________________________.

Conclusion
o Transition word/phrase and topic sentence:
______________________________
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________.
o Summarize key points (Annes characteristics that help us
understand why she is an
optimist) _______________________________________________________

o Restate thesis statement: ___________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________
Step 4: Now we need to elaborate (add details to clarify meaning) on your SRE
Formatted Responses, so that your audience can understand how to be more optimistic,
even if they have never read The Diary of Anne Frank. In your elaborations, you are
welcome to add personal connections or stories, share modern day examples, or simply
explain why that characteristic helps Anne become an optimistic person.
For example:
Anne is hopeful. Being hopeful helps people look forward to the future,
instead of dwelling on the past. Hope has helped me be more optimistic
during tough times because it allows me to dream of a perfect situation
and work hard to achieve it. Even though Anne is never freed from Nazi
control, she was able to enjoy her final years with happiness, instead of
focusing on all the things that went wrong. Hopefulness brings optimism
and we should all strive to be more like Anne in this way.
Your turn:
