Background. Pediatric
liver diseases is a special terminology, caused by some etiologies such as infection, toxic, metabolic and
genetic, and also can be divided into intra or extrahepatic. The prevalence
of the
diseases varies by geographical, race and age.
Objective.To investigate the most prevalence pediatric liver disease.
Methods.
A retrospective study was performed by reviewing mediacal records of patients with liver disease
hospitalized
at Department of Child Health Dr. Soetomo
from Januari 1999 to December 2004. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistic.

Results.There were 243 (1,07‰) cases of pediatric liver disease from 22,652 pediatric inpatient of
Dr. Soetomo Hospital
Surabaya. The most prevalent cases were neonatal cholestasis 106 (43,6%), acute hepatitis 55(22,6%),
portal hypertension 31(12,8%), liver malignancy 15(6,2) and acute liver failure 4(1,5%).Cytomegalovirus
(CMV) neonatal hepatitis were proven in 11(10,4%) of neonatal cholestasis, 28 (26,4%), neonatal
hepatitis, 11(10,4%) biliary atresia, 8(7,5%) choledocal cyst, and in 48(45,3%) patients the diagnosis was
still neonatal cholestasis
because of technical problem.Only 4(36,4%) of 11 biliari atresia were treated surgically, while the others
7(63,6%) were not treated, because of biliary cirrhosis, late of of referred and financial problem. From 55
patients of acute hepatitis 23 were hepatitis A (HAV) and 6 B (HBV), the others (26) were not diagnosed
serologically yet. The diagnosis of liver malignancies were based on percutaneous needle liver biopsy.All
of these malignancy patients refused to have cytostatic treatment because of poor prognosis.
Conclusions. Neonatal cholestasis still the most prevalence pediatric liver disease. Not all of these patients
were managed properly,because late of referred and financial problem.
