SYNOPSIS
This course is intended for learners with no prior knowledge of the Kadazandusun Language. In this
level, learners will acquire some basic vocabulary of KD. They will learn to communicate in KD based on
some communicative topics introduced in the weekly scheme of work. The four language skills, reading,
writing, speaking and listening are incorporated in the course. Salient aspects of the KD grammar, in
particular voice system and focus marking will also be introduced. Various activities are provided to
introduce new vocabulary and phrases used in daily encounters. Apart from that, cultural aspects of KD
will be included in the teaching and learning materials in order to raise the learners awareness on the
language and culture of the KD people.
OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion of the course learners will:
a) be exposed to at least 1000 words of KD vocabulary
b) learn the basic tenets of KD grammar namely voice system and focus marking
c) be able to comprehend short texts and conversation
d) be able to produce formulaic phrases and utterances in familiar daily communicative contexts
e) write a 50 to 80 words essay
f) get to know some aspects of KD culture and society dynamics, as one of the minority ethnic
community in Malaysia.

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE ASSESSMENTS


Quiz/Assignment (25%) conducted in the classroom
Quiz Online (15%)
It will be conducted in week 5 and will cover lessons learned from weeks 1-4. For this purpose,
students are required to register to UD00102 at http://smart2.ums.edu.my/.
Assignment (writing) take home (10%). Question will be given in week 10. Students will be
asked to write a 50 to 80 word composition based on one of the topics covered in the
classroom till week 9. This assignment is due in week 11. Marking scheme will be attached to
the question sheet.
Mid Semester Test (20%)- 1.5 hours
Mid semester test will be conducted in week 10. Questions will cover lessons learned from
weeks 1 until 7. The first section of the test comprises reading comprehension, in which there
will be one (1) text followed by 10 comprehension questions. In the second section, there will
be 20 multiple-choice (MCQ) and other types of grammar questions, while the last section will
comprise a writing test.
Oral Test (25%)- 2 tests and will be conducted on weeks 13 & 14
Individual 10% (students answer questions based on pictures or situations given by the
instructor).
Pair work or group of 3 people 15% (forming an impromptu dialogue based on a topic that
the pair of students will get on the test day itself).
Final Exam (30%)- 2 hours
The final exam is conducted formally during the exam week. There are three sections that are
similar to the mid semester test. In the first section, students are to answer 20 comprehension
questions based on two texts. In the second section, there will be 30 MCQ and other types of
grammar questions. And in the final section students will be required to do two types of writing:
translating sentences from KD to Malay or English, and writing a short composition (50-80
words).
Reminder: Please DO all the evaluations. Failure to do so will cause you to FAIL this course.
