INTRODUCTION
You are the human resource director at City Cash Bank. You are visiting the local
university to recruit accounting students for entry level accounting positions at City
Cash Bank. You will give a presentation on business ethics; law; products and
services that bank provides; and the requirements for being hired and advancing
with the bank. You will be placed on a team of four students to research the
material needed for your presentation and you will present your finding to the class
using presentation software. Your group should contact a business partner at a local
bank or financial institution to help with this project.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
Are finance majors interested in careers in the banking field and are they
knowledgeable about banking products/services and the opportunities for career
advancement in this field?
INTEGRATION OF ACADEMICS, TECHNOLOGY, ENTREPRENEURSHIP
To complete this project, students will utilize oral, written, and multimedia
communications that target academic, technical, and professional/entrepreneurship
sills. They will:
Work collaboratively in teams
Use Microsoft Office to complete assignments
Present finding to class by using computer, data projector, and multimedia
software

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT IN PLANNING PROCESS


Each team develops a contract for how it will operate during this project,
including how to handle conflict and consequences for team members that
dont participate.
Each team develops a written project plan to be used as a guide for
completing tasks within the project.
TASK(S)
1. Develop the student contract and written project plan for completing this PLB
(1 day)
2. The group should contact a local business partner to help with this PBL. Tell
the business partner that you will be contacting them in person, by phone, or
by e-mail for assistance in completing your project. Invite your business
partner to the classroom to watch/evaluate your final presentation. (1 day)
3. Discuss licensure and certification available to finance professionals. The
group should identify the job in finance that they are most interested in. They
should choose an online source to research licensures and certifications
commonly held by individuals in that particular profession. The group should
type the finding and place them in the City Cash Bank notebook. (1 day)
4. Discuss opportunities for building professional relationships in finance. The
group should contact a business professional at a financial institution to act
as their business partner with this PBL. They can visit with the business
partner in person or can communicate by phone or e-mail. (1 day) This may
or may not be the same partner as in task 2.
5. Use time-management skills. Go to www.mbalearningcenterwv.org and
complete the LAP, About time! Print the LAP and place in City Cash Bank
notebook. (3 days)
6. Explain the concept of accounting (purposes, uses of data, cash accounting
method, accrual accounting, cost accounting). Go to
www.mbalearningcenterwv.org and complete the LAP, Show me the money.
Print the LAP and place in City Cash Bank notebook. (3 days)
7. Discuss the role of ethics in accounting. The team should research ethical
standards and laws for the accounting profession and then develop its
recommendations and policies for City Cash Bank. Contact your business
partner for their input. Write a three paragraph summary and place it in the
City Cash Bank notebook. (1 day)
8. Explain the role of finance in business. Go to www.mbalearningcenterwv.org
and complete the LAP, Money matters. Print the LAP and place in City Cash
Bank notebook. (3 days)
9. Discuss the role of ethics in finance. Design a section in the policy manual for
City Cash Bank entitled Ethical Standards. Use Microsoft Word or Publisher
to design this section. Place in the City Cash Bank notebook. (2 days)

10.Discuss the nature of financial institutions. The group should design a poster
titled Types of Financial Institutions. The poster should identify types of
financial institutions, and should describe their general purpose. (2 days)
11.Discuss legal considerations in the finance industry. The group should make a
three minute video that shows the impact of laws on City Cash Bank and its
customers. The group should play the video during their final presentation to
the class. (2 days)
12.Explain types of financial markets (e.g., money market, capital market,
insurance market, commodities market, etc.) City Cash Bank wants to
explain financial markets to a group of students. You are to conduct an
Internet search to become familiar with different types of financial markets.
Make a short PowerPoint presentation to show to the group. Present this
PowerPoint to the class during your final presentation. (2 days)
13.Discuss career opportunities in the finance industry. Go to
www.mbalearningcenterwv.org and complete the LAP, Careers in the money.
Print the LAP and place in City Cash Bank notebook. (3 days)
14.Write business letters. Write a business letter to send to your business
partner that helped with this PBL. Thank them for their time and with three
examples of how they helped with this project. Place a copy of the letter in
your City Cash Bank notebook. (1 day)
15.Describe types of retail/business banking products and services. The group
should use the Internet to research banking products and services offered by
local banks in the West Virginia area. They should also contact their business
partner for information. The group should design a brochure using Microsoft
Publisher to describe the products. Place a copy of the brochure in the City
Cash Bank notebook and pass out the brochures to the class during the final
presentation. (3 days)
16. Describe the nature of retail/business banking processes. Invite your
business partner to your classroom to be a guest speaker. (1 day)
17.Present you final presentation to the class. Topic: Career opportunities in
banking and the products and services they provide. (1 day)
*Note: The group must complete sections 1 & 2 Read This and section 3 Do
This in all LAP activities. Print all work in section 3 and place in your
Marketing Principles notebook.

The evaluation of this PBL will be by grading the written project plan, student
activities, and by rubrics.
TIMELINE
The class periods are in 55 minutes in length. This PBL will take a total of 31 class
periods.
CONCLUSION
Using knowledge gained from Internet research and classroom assignments,
students will better understand the products/services that banks provide and
opportunities for career advancement in this field. By presenting their findings to
the class by using presentation software, the students will demonstrate that they
have mastered the content established in this PBL.
