Performance Task Assessment

EDI 337 Fall 2015

Unit: Similarity
Grade: 7
Purpose:
This performance task assessment is a formative/summative assessment
that will provide the student and teacher with information about the students
ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate the topic of similarity. This
formative/summative assessment follows the unit, Similarity, and is followed by
the unit, Statistical Investigations. This is a five-day assessment. MondayThursday are formative and prepare the students for the summative assessment
on Friday.

Standards/Benchmarks:
7.G.A.1 Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including
computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a
scale drawing at a different scale.
7.G.B.6 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume
and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles,
quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

Learning Targets
I can investigate my surroundings and
create a scale model of them.

Overall Directions
Your mastery of similarity will be assessed through demonstrating that you
have gained the ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate similarity through
the Im an Architect! performance task assessment. The final product will be a
scale model and building process write-up. You will work with a team of 5
people. You will begin by investigating the school and collecting measurement
data. You will use the data youve collected to plan a design for a scale model
of the school and a proposal for new additions. Next, your team will create and
present your proposal. You will critique others proposals and have yours
critiqued. You will use the feedback from others to revise your plan. Finally, you
will work with your team to build a scale model of the school with your proposed
additions.
Each worksheet you need for the week is in this packet. Be sure to write
your name, number, and todays date on each worksheet. You have worked
hard throughout this unit and you are all great mathematicians. By the end of
this week, you will be able to say Im an architect!.

Measurement Data

In this unit, we have learned about similarity and scaling. Your teams job
is to spend 45 minutes collecting any measurements of the school building that
you believe will help you in creating a scale drawing of the school. As you are
collecting your data, record what was measured and what the measure is.

Day 2: Plan Your Proposal

(1 Hour)
Todays Directions
Today we will begin with each group sharing the data that they found to
be important from Day 1. The more data we gather, the more accurate our
final scale model will be. After the data share, you will work with your team to
begin planning how you are going to build a scale model of the school building.
Then, you will create a prototype and draft an official proposal, which will be
critiqued by the other teams on Day 3.

Planning

Using what you have learned about similarity, your team will work together
to use the data you collected, and the data you received from others in the
data share, to plan how you are going to build a scale model of the school
building. In your building, you will include at least two additions (be creative!) to
the building. In the space below, record your plan.

Official Proposal

In the space provided below, create a prototype scale drawing of the

school building, including the additions. On the back of this worksheet, draft an
official proposal stating:
1. Where you want to add the additions.
2. How you know the additions will work in this area.
3. The dimensions of the additions.
Tomorrow, each team will share their prototype and their proposal with
the class, and the other teams will critique their proposal.

Day 3: Sharing Proposals and Critiques

(1 Hour)
Todays Directions
Today, each team will share their official proposal that was drafted on
Day 2. Then, each team will critique all of the proposals to provide their peers
with useful feedback to improve their prototype.

In the table below, write your critique of each teams proposal. Be sure to
identify the following: any questions that you may have about their plan, any
suggestions you may have, any flaws you might notice, or anything else you
wish to address. Once you are finished, cut out each section of the grid and
give your feedback to each team.

Day 4: Revise!
(1 Hour)
Todays Directions
Today, you will be using the feedback you received from the other teams
to make any changes or improvements to your prototype. This is the last
chance you have to make changes! On the Final Plan worksheet, write your
final plan that will be used tomorrow when you build your scale model of the
school building, including additions.

Day 5: Im an Architect!
(1 Hours)
Todays Directions
Today you will combine everything you have been doing over the past
four days to create a scale model of the school building, including at least two
additions your group added. As your team is building, select one team member
to record the building process. This will be turned in with your scale model for
grading.
The scale model and building process write-up you turn in will be graded
on how well your building process followed your plan, degree to which your
building was to scale, and signs of revisions made using peer feedback. Along
with your scale model, please turn in this completed packet. Good luck!
