SYNOPSIS

Introduction:
The development of science and technology and ever
growing global economies has increased human capacity to
extract resources from nature. This has led to reduced resource
efficiencies resulting in growing quantum of waste ending up in
landfills as well as fast depletion of natural resources.
Some of the estimates echo this fact saying that over 100
million tons/ year of non- hazardous and 8 million tons of
hazardous wastes are generated in India. The per capita
generation of municipal solid waste is around 0.2 - 0.6 kg per day
increasing at a rate of 1 -1.3% per year.
All these waste fall under over 50 different waste categories
including municipal, hazardous, agricultural, biomedical, etc.,
further each having thousands of types of waste. If India
continues with the present practices in waste management, the
country will require more that 1,400 sq.km of land by 2047
primarily consisting of Construction and Demolition (C & D),
Plastic, other non-reusable materials.

CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION INDUSTRY WASTE MANAGEMENT

2013-2014

THESIS

In most parts of the world, construction industry consumes

huge amount of natural resources and often generates large
quantities of construction waste.
Activities like construction, renovation or demolition
of structures generate a mixture of inert and non-inert
materials which are particularly defined as construction
wastes (US EPA-1998).
Statistical data shows, construction and demolition (C&D)
debris frequently makes up 10-30% of the waste received at
many landfill sites around the world (Fishbein, 1998).
According to 11th five year
plan, construction industry is
the second largest economic
activity
after
agriculture.
Significant
portion
of
Indian
construction waste is still disposed
off in landfills.

Need:
Proper waste handling on construction sites can
economically benefit a project and the construction industry
by saving crores of rupees to the industry.
Avoiding the exploitation of natural resources.
Avoid filling up of the landfill sites.
Avoiding derelict land.

Aim:
To identify the production of waste in construction and
demolition industry.

THESIS

To propose ideas and techniques to reduce waste being

produced from the C&D industry
To establish a construction and demolition waste
transforming center to resource in the waste and
transforming them into recyclable materials.

Objective:
Addressing garbage and its problems at the very initial stage
of designing.
o Small scale : Independent houses, bungalows, cafes,
restaurants etc
o Medium scale : Institutions etc
o Large scale : Industries, high-rise housing projects etc.
Techniques to be adapted in construction to reduce the
wastage.
Handling the waste from the demolition site.
Designing a waste transforming center to handle the
construction and demolition waste and transforming them
into recycled products.

Scope:
Research on wastage produced in construction
demolition industry.
Design strategies to cut down the wastage
Innovative materials and techniques
Transforming waste into usable products
