General field information Norne

The Norne Field consists of two separate oil compartments, the Norne Main Structure (Norne
C-, D and E-Segment) and the Northeast Segment (Norne G-Segment) (Figure 1.2). The Norne
Main Structure was discovered in December 1991 and includes 97% of the oil in place.
The discovery well, 6608/10-2, proved a total hydrocarbon-bearing column of 135 m in the
rocks of Lower and Middle Jurassic age. The column consisted of a 110 m thick oil leg with an
overlying gas cap. Well 6608/10-3 confirmed the results of the discovery well.

The field is being developed with five templates at the sea bottom connected to a floating
production vessel (Figure 1.4). Development drilling started in August 1996, and the oil
production started the 6th November 1997.
In 2005 an extra template K was placed on the sea bottom 150-200 m south of B, C and D
templates. The K-template has 4 slots available; 3 for producer and 1 for injector or producer.
The first production well K-3 H is planned to be drilled during summer 2006.

Figure 1.4 The development of the Norne and Urd Field (Norne satellites Str and Svale).
In January 2006 the Norne Field is producing oil from all 12 well slots, approximately 15000
Sm/sd. 8 injectors have been drilled, and water is injected in all 8 wells. 68 mill Sm oil has
been produced since the production started, which is approximately 43 % of the oil in place or
76 % of recoverable reserves.
Gas export from the Norne Field was started in 2001 (Figure 1.5). Approximately 1 GSm of
gas is exported every year.

General field information Urd

The Urd Field consists of two structures, Str and Svale, which are located 5 and 10 km
respectively north east of the Norne ship (Norne FPSO) (Figure 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6). The Svale
and Str structures were discovered in spring 2000 and 2002 respectively.
The Norwegian authority approved the PDO for the Norne satellites Svale and Str in June
2004. The oil production from Urd Field started in November 2005.
The Svale reservoir consists of the two oil-bearing sandstone formations re and Melke, of
which re 2 sandstone of Lower Jurassic age is the main reservoir, and re 1 sandstone is a
secondary reservoir. re 1 and re 2 are heterogeneous sandstone with very variable reservoir
quality (Figure 1.7).
The Str reservoir consists of four oil-bearing sandstone formations Melke, Not, Tilje and re,
of which Not, Tilje and re are the main reservoirs (Figure 1.7).
The Melke Formation consists of shale and 3 coarsening upwards sequences of silty sandstone
which are oil-bearing. Evaluation has started in 2005 to exploit the Melke oil (Figure 1.8).
The reservoir rocks are deposited in coastal plain to delta plain environment with swamps and
channels. The upper parts of the reservoir are deposited in a marginal marine environment. The
heterogeneous character is due to changing lithology with alternating sandstones and clay
stones interbedded with coal stringers and coal rich clay (Figure 1.9).

The Urd Field is being developed with three templates at the sea bottom connected to the
Norne FPSO (Figure 1.4). Development drilling started in September 2004, and the oil
production started in November 2005.
The Str and Svale structures will be drained by using water injection as pressure support. All
the production wells will in addition have gas-lift to cope with a lower reservoir pressure and
increasing water cut. As the Urd reservoir is heterogeneous, the producer will have equipments
installed for zone-control (DIACS) to achieve a more gentle drainage of high and low
permeable reservoir zones and thereby increase the recovery factor.
To drain the Svale structure and the re-reservoir it is planned for 3 oil producer (G-1 H, G-2
H and G-4 H) and 2 water injectors (H-1 H and H-3 H) (Figure 1.10).
To drain the Str structure from the J-template it is planned for 2 oil producers (J-2 H and J-3
H) and 1 water injector (J-1 H) (Figure 1.11).
In January 2006 the Urd Field is producing oil from 3 well slots (G-1 H, G-4 H and J-2 H),
approximately 8500 Sm/sd. Two injectors have been drilled, and water is injected.
Approximately 0, 5 mill Sm oil has been produced since the production started.

1.1.5

Drainage strategy and well plans for Norne and Urd Field
The main goal is to develop the Norne and Urd Field such that the economic optimum
production profile is obtained.
The subsurface activities are intended to work towards the license ambition to achieve a oil
recovery of 62 % from the Norne main field and 112 mill Sm oil from Norne and Urd as total.
This is ambitious since it requires effort to ensure the basis, realise the identified IOR
measures, and in addition to provide another 6 mill Sm oil by new IOR measures.
In addition to the long term ambition, optimal production and reservoir management on short
term basis is needed to realise both the basis and the IOR production estimate.
The prognosis for next years oil production is 7.1 mill Sm, 4.4 mill Sm3 from Norne and 2.7
mill Sm from Urd. The uncertainty (P90/P10) is estimated to +/- 1.4 mill Sm. This is a large
span, and is caused by lack of production history from Urd and the stage between plateau and
tail production on Norne. The major uncertainties are more specific related to:

Well productivity Urd wells.

Reservoir performance, WCT and GOR development.
Well failures such as down hole scale deposits.
Drilling, completion and intervention success and progress.

The Norne Field should be regarded as a mature reservoir and plateau rates will definitely not
be achieved any more. The reservoir performance is in major parts of the field as expected.
Water cut is rising in most of the wells. Drainage from the Upper Ile reservoir has started in 3
wells, two of them performing well. The reserve estimate in base case has been increased from
88.5 to 89.2 mill Sm. This is based on investment of the K-template and the verification of

TTRD technology in 2005. However, the increase in reserves is less than the increase due to
these IOR measures due to a reduction of the estimate for reserves.
The wells drilled so far on Svale and Str confirm the assumptions made in the PDO. In
addition re1 reserves of 0.9 mill Sm, has been included since one of the producers on Svale
now has been completed with one additional DIACS zone in re1. The total Urd reserves are
thereby lifted from the PDOs 10.4 to 11.3 mill Sm3.
Today the focus is on optimising the value creation in the license PL128 by:

Safe and cost effective drainage of proven reserves

Prove new reserves at optimal timing to utilise existing infrastructure and exploring the
potential in the license
Adjust capacities in cases where this could be done cost effectively
Produce at least 4,40 mill Sm oil on the Norne Field, and 2,70 mill Sm oil on the Urd
Field in 2006.
Improve drainage strategy with low cost infill wells as multilateral/MLT and through
tubing drilled wells (TTRD and TTML).
Improved description and optimised drainage strategy to achieve recoverable reserves to
more than 112 millSm from Norne and Urd as total

The Norne Field is now developed only with horizontal producers. However, to accelerate the
build-up of well potential until plateau production was reached, some of the first producers
were drilled vertical to some deviated. All these wells have been sidetracked to horizontal
producers.
The pre-start drainage strategy was to maintain the reservoir pressure by re-injection of
produced gas into the gas cap and water injection into the water zone. However, during the first
year of production it was experienced that the Not shale is sealing over the Norne Main
Structure, and the gas injection has been changed to inject in the water zone and the lower part
of the oil zone, and in 2005 the gas injection was ended (Figure 1.6).
The horizontal oil producers in Tofte and Lower Ile Formation will be plugged and sidetracked
(MLT, TTRD, TTML) and drilled horizontal in Upper Ile Formation just below the Not
Formation shale when the water cut becomes to high (>90 %) resulting in problems to lift the
liquid.

Time lapse seismic-4D reservoir monitoring Norne and Urd

Norne has in the last years been very active using time lapse seismic in reservoir monitoring.
The base survey ST9203 was acquired in 1992, well before oil production started in 1997. The
first acquisition survey for time lapse monitoring was performed in 2001, and then repeated in
2003 and 2004. For the Urd Field ST0409 will be the base survey (Figure 2.1).

The Norne Field is a flat horst structure and a change in fluid contacts during production has to
be monitored by the difference in seismic signals from the reservoir zone from year to year. In
this context it is very important for repeatability that the seismic lines are acquired at the same
geographical position each time and the seismic acquisition parameters are identical to the
previous surveys. For the 4D surveys on the Norne Field, WesternGeco Q-marine active
streamer steering have been used, allowing accurate positioning of streamers for reliable repeat
surveys.

Results from the 4D seismic have been important in detecting fluid movement for reservoir
management and production. In the targeting remaining oil process (TRO) use of 4D seismic
data is an important tool (Figure 2.2).
A new 4D seismic survey covering the Norne and Urd Field will be acquired during summer
2006 to an estimated cost of 70 MNOK (56 MNOK Norne and 14 MNOK Urd).

Modeling Norne and Urd Field 2006

3.1

Geological modeling Norne and Urd Field

The seismic survey ST0409 covering the Norne and Urd Field (146 km ) is being reprocessed
for imaging. To enhance the data quality the reprocessing is performed both with pre-stack
time and depth migration.
These seismic data will in 2006 be interpreted with emphasis on improving fault definitions
and intra reservoir interpretation on the Norne and Urd Field.
The new depth maps and the reservoir zonation will be used in an updated geological
modeling.

3.2

Reservoir simulation model Norne and Urd Field

An updated simulation model both for Norne and Urd Field will be made based on the
geological models built in 2006.

The simulation grid will be based on updated fault polygons and new structural and isochore
maps, produced in 2006. RMS will be used for generating the grid and populating the grid with
petrophysical properties.
Porosity, permeability and net-to-gross will be imported from the geological model. Vertical
barriers will be implemented as MULTZ-maps imported from the geological model. The maps
are generated both from well- and pressure data. The transmissibility values of the MULTZmaps will be adjusted as part of the history matching process.

Well work over plan 2006

The well work over plan is a summary of activities that are likely to be performed in 2006
within the approved budget in order to maintain well production potential. It is likely that
further activities will have to be carried out in order to maintain well potential. The amount and
cost of these activities is however uncertain.
The activities which are listed in the table below have an estimated cost within the approve
budget of 44 mill NOK for Norne. The individual activities will be subject to cost/benefit
analysis for each operation.

Norne and Urd Field production plan 2006

5.1

Production volumes Norne and Urd Field

The prognosis for 2006 oil production is 7.1 mill Sm, 4.4 mill Sm from Norne and 2.7 mill
Sm from Urd (Table 5.1 and Figure 5.1).
The uncertainty (P90/P10) is estimated to +/- 1.4 mill Sm. This is a large span, and is caused
by lack of production history from Urd and the stage between plateau and tail production on
Norne. The major uncertainties are more specific related to:

Well productivity Urd wells.

Reservoir performance, WCT and GOR development.
Well failures such as down hole scale deposits.
Drilling, completion and intervention success and progress

The gas handling capacity is 7.0 mill Sm/d.
The gas injection was stopped on the Norne Field in 2005. All the produced gas is exported.
However, some gas is consumed on the Norne ship as fuel (0.3 mill Sm/d).
The gas export rate to sgard Transport for 2006 is presented in the table 5.2.

Improved recovery (IOR) activities 2006

Significant results have been achieved in 2005 related to being able to use new technology for
drilling and completing new wells for lower cost and better drainage. DIACS have been
implemented on the Urd producers and a successful TTRD operation on Norne has been
completed. The multilateral well has not been able to finalise, however, this was caused by rig
related problems.
The Norne Field has an increase in oil reserves by 2.0 mill Sm related to maturing of IORvolumes from 2005 to 2006. However, based on production history, a reduction of 1.3 mill Sm
has to be included, and the basis RNB 2005 (88.50 mill Sm) has increased to 89.24 mill Sm
(RNB 2006) (Table 6.1).
The Urd Field has an increase in oil reserves by 0.9 mill Sm related to maturing of IORvolumes from 2005 to 2006. The basis RNB 2005 (10.41 mill Sm) has increased to 11.32 mill
Sm (RNB 2006) (Table 6.2)

Develop a system being able to drill TTRD with the mother bore still producing (TTML).
Achieve and even better results from the 4D seismic.
Melke development.

Activities will be performed on the Norne Field during 2006 to achieve a reserve growth to
resource classes 0-3 of 0.6 mill Sm oil, and resource growth to classes 4-5 is expected to 0.4
mill Sm (Figure 6.1).
For the Urd Field there is not expected any reserve growth (0-3) or resource development (4-5)
during 2006.

Updated long term production profiles and recoverable reserves

The updated long-term production profiles for Norne and Urd Field are presented in the Table
6.1 -6.4. The oil profile is based on simulation results combined with production experience
from the last year.
The ultimate oil recovery from the Norne Field until 2016 is estimated to 89.24 mill Sm, and
for the Urd Field 11.32 mill Sm. The oil production profile is also shown in the table 6.2 with
the estimated P90 and P10 profiles. The gas export profile for Norne Field is based on estimate
of optimal gas export rate.
