Reflection Letter
Dear Professor Longhurst, I have had a great time being a part of your class and studying
under your instruction. I have been able to better my writing skills and become more proficient
than from years passed, which has helped me become a more effective communicator and a more
in tune user of rhetoric to explain my viewpoint. Throughout this semester I have learned the
following strategies: in depth research, how to develop a profile, how to better understand causal
arguments and how to give an evaluation argument, as well as how to put all of these together to
have a complete portfolio on a specific idea or process. All of these strategies have taught
myself new techniques that will be very applicable in the future.
Throughout the semester all writing strategies have been put to use. We learned how to
do in depth research and use credible sites that have legitimate background knowledge and
credibility. We have learned to find specific situations and experiences in a person in order to
find the right answers for making a profile. As well as asking the right questions to obtain
correct information. These strategies have also taught me to stay contextual and only use
factual/credible evidence when displaying a causal argument and giving a evaluation argument
that way the reader can see the facts for themselves and hopefully make good judgement on their
opinion towards the issue.
Each one of these strategies was a specific assignment to our groups this semester which
we have put all together to make a complete project with a proposed solution. This signature

assignment has honed in the skills of each group member on what it takes to really understand
an issue or problem that is going on in society today and what we can do in order to help out
with that specific problem. When all of the strategies are combined into one, it makes for a
strong, credible, informative project that can be used to inform people for the better. Which I
think the life lesson is here: that in future work places one will need to be able to be collaborative
with a group, like we have done in this class, and if you want something to be done about a hot
topic or important issue, than one needs to go through these steps in order to have legitimate
credibility that will earn the trust of others, which then could potentially lead to a movement.
In this English class, we have not only learned things that are real life applicable, but also
how applicable these strategies can be used in other subjects of school. Writing is a very
complex, beautiful, expressing, and elaborate way to convey a message to others that one could
potentially not reach. Writing, like all general ed courses, has a very important role in todays
society and peoples everyday lives.
