WRIT 200-OBE Part 3-Informal Proposal

To: John McLean

From: Isabelle Gbekie
Date: November 12th, 2016
Subject: Proposal Assignment Part 3

The purpose of this memo is to officially propose the topic that we have chosen for our final
report and presentation. It will clearly state our topic, along with information such as:

Purpose/Problem
Feasibility
Audience
Topics to Investigate
Methods
Qualifications
Work Schedule

Purpose
The official topic of choice for this group assignment will be Can teleworking increase
productivity in the workplace?. However, I will be focusing on the vast topic of teleworking in
general.

Problem
The problem is organizations are trying to figure out methods to increase employee productivity
and motivation. The benefits of teleworking will be presented in this proposal to analyze and
identify effective ways; it can be used in the workplace. We will explain the factors that
influence effective use of this method. The benefits of teleworking are as follows:

Reducing commuting costs

Reducing time spent in traffic or on public transit
Accommodating different working styles and providing flexibility
Reducing office carbon footprint
Increasing work/life balance

This change is best suited for at home style employees.

WRIT 200-OBE Part 3-Informal Proposal

Feasibility
I do believe that there is a solution to this problem. I know this because there has been a rise in
telecommuting over the past 20 years, which could be partly due to an increased belief that
employees who work from home are just as productive there, as opposed to being in their office.
The traditional 9-5 working day of driving to an office, sitting in a cubicle for hours and hours
then forgetting all about work at the end of the day is all but non-existent.
Thanks to telecommuting and the rise of millennials in the workplace, employees are now able to
work from pretty much anywhere at any time of day, with little or no disruption or sacrifice in
productivity (Biro, 2014).
Furthermore, studies have revealed that 58 percent of Americans including both employed
and unemployed people believe those who work remotely are just as productive as those who
work in an office (TUGEND, 2014).

Audience
YouJohn McLeanare my audience now. This memo is firmly to make you aware of our
project regarding our final report/presentation. Once completed, my audience will be the general
population who have interest in knowing the ups and downs of the teleworking world. These are
the people that will be affected by my research. Most of the terms used will be as clear and
comprehensible as possible, with definitions provided directly after the term is used.

Topics to Investigate
Some of the questions that we will be addressing in our report is:

What is telework?
-The topic must be clearly defined for our audience and for our audience and for
anyone who does not have a clear understanding.

Are companies truly embracing telework as a feasible commuting option?

-This question analyzes how common it is across the globe.

What are the benefits of having a telework program?

-This question outlines the positives of teleworking.

How do telework programs aid in a company's productivity and overall

competitiveness?

WRIT 200-OBE Part 3-Informal Proposal

-This question is to evaluate the effectiveness of teleworking.

What types of jobs are suitable for teleworking?

-This question is to assess if it can be used effectively with different types of jobs,
besides office jobs.

How much does it cost to set up a teleworker?

-This question focuses on how expensive it will be for an organization to
introduce teleworking.

Who is eligible to participate in Telework programs?

-The type of employee that can properly use this option.

We chose to discourse these questions and concepts simply to inform readers about Teleworking
and grasp a better sense on whether telework is beneficial or unbeneficial. That way, they see the
many different views on the topic that research has found.

Methods
I plan on obtaining answers to questions and information from valid, well-researched, peer
reviewed websites. This way, the data will be from factual and reliable sources that have done
extensive research and experience on the matter. My list of sources are:

Qualifications
As of now, I believe that my teammates and I have the potential to carry out this project.
However, it is getting them to utilize their potential that will be the hard part. We have members
that possess skills such as:

Brain storming
Researching
Writing literacy
Editing literacy

These traits along with measures taken, should help us complete our task. If we push ourselves
and work even harder, we can accomplish all the things we have written down in our work
schedule. If we run into difficulties, we can turn to you, our instructor, for assistance.
