1) Identify the 5 stages of language acquisition, key factors (3-4) about each stage,
and at least one effective strategy that can be used with ELL students from that
stage
a. Pre-Production
i. Some key factors of this stage include non-verbal responses, few
oral skills, and pointing nodding and drawing. One effective
strategy that can be used in this stage is for the teacher to use is
visual aids and graphs.
b. Early Pre-Production
i. Some key factors of this stage include limited comprehension, 1-2
word responses and better listening skills. One effective strategy
that can be used in this stage is journal writing and role play.
c. Speech Emergence
i. Some key factors of this stage include simple sentences, good
comprehension, and grammar errors. One effective strategy that
can be used in this stage
d. Intermediate Fluency
i. Some key factors of this stage include great comprehensions with
few grammatical errors. One effective strategy that can be used in
this stage is using paraphrasing and journal writing.
e. Advanced Fluency
i. Some key factors of this stage include varied grammatical
structures, strong vocabulary and developed sentences and
responses. At this stage the student should be completing tasks at
grade level and the teacher should just use extra support when
needed.
2) Identify the 4 methods of co-teaching, a brief description of each method, and an
example of how each method of co-teaching can be used effectively for classrooms with
ELL students
a. Complementary Co-teaching is when there are two teachers equally involved in
teaching a lesson. Co-teaching can be used effectively in the classroom when there is a
students struggle or group work, the teachers can go around and help certain groups while
the other teacher is teaching in font of the room.
b. Parallel teaching, in this type of classroom the teacher and the student both
divide the classroom in half and teach and learn the same amount. The is useful in the
classroom when the teacher wants the students to used their creativity and explore rather
then the teacher saying a,b, and c and the students just copying notes.

c. Support teaching is when one teacher takes the lead in the lesson and the other
teachers follow their lead. This is effective when one teacher can walk around and help
struggling students one-on-one.
d. Team teaching involves a pair or multiple teachers all sharing the same amount
of work, all the teachers are engaged in this lesson and each teach a certain area of the
topic. Team teaching is useful in situations where there is a lot of information for a
specific lesson each teacher can teach the area they are most comfortable with and know
the most about.
