Technology Integration Form SCREENCASTING

GENERAL INFORMATION
Selected Technology/Resource Name:

Camtasia

Age/Grade Level:

10-12

(but I think its
mostly useful for
teachers)

Technology/Resource Type:

Application Software Device Website

Pricing is a little steep. Education license is $179. Not too bad. But also not terribly good. Its also not available through ASUs
MyAppsI checked, hehe.

Associated Learning Standard(s): The resource may be generally applicable, if so, simply state that. List any ISTE-S standards that
seem to naturally align with the selected resource.

Generally applicable, but focused on ensuring all students have access to learning materials. In particular, if students have to be
away from the classroom (sick, field trip, etc.), Screencasting creates a record for them. And even if they were present,
screencasted lessons can help students review.

RESOURCE DESCRIPTION
Camtasia records everything you see on a screen as a video. Audio can also be saved in the same file, or imported laterlike if
youd wanted to use better, external mic to ensure your voice is picked up. It is capable of recording very large files. Ive seen
screencasts of over an hour and a half.

INTEGRATION/IMPLEMENTATION IDEA - SCREENCASTING
How might you use this resource to promote student learning? Describe who will be doing the screencasting you or your
students, and what purpose it will serve.

Teacher: Ive had many classes in which the teacher screencasts his / her lessons. They enhance the screencast by using a stylus
and writing on the screen. This can also be accomplished by just videotaping the actual class session. Perhaps Screencasting is
easier, I dunno. Anyway, this has been helpful in some math classes when reviewing for exams. A complete record of what
happened in all the classes. Pretty cool. Additionally, in many online classes or labs (which, Math labs here at ASU, weirdly have
no instructional component and are all taught via screencast) screencasts have been used to give instructions. I have found this
approach most helpful when the screencasts are broken up into discrete chunks of no more than ten minutes. That way, I can
easily follow along for a few minutes, work on my own, then keep watching.

Students: Im struggling to come up with motivations for students using Screencasting. Seems like a stretch. A grasping to
integrate technology when its absence might be preferable. The ideas I come up with are sort of limp. Maybe they could create a
screencast of their research process, detailing which online resources they used? But then this limits what the student can show
to online sources Maybe a student could take a tour of trending issues (by, for example, perusing various social media platforms
and media outlets) and try to make a conjecture about the pulse on a certain issue. Hm. I kinda like that idea.

VALUE-ADDED EXPLANATION
Camtasia allows a record of the lesson to be created. Thats basically it. I wracked my brain for a few student centered ideas, but
came up with little.

Creating digital records of class sessions are great, but it begs the questionif youre just gonna record the lesson year after
yearwhy not just show the videos? Whats the difference?

There HAS to be. And thats why questions like those do and should make us feel uncomfortable.
