Bandung 20 Agustus 2015

As the largest archipelago country in the equator, Indonesia

encounters challenges in its electricity development.

In the main grid system, the expansion of load challenge by the
issue of power supply quality and reliability
The utilization of indigenous renewable energy such as wind and
solar power are limited by their intermittency and fluctuation.
The development of smartgrid technology provides opportunity
to improve the Indonesian electricity
BPPT conducts researches on smartgrid applications for both
microgrid application in the main grid in Java, and with storage
system to increase renewable energy penetration in a small grid.
A particular project exploring Wind Power Hybrid Project of BPPT
and UNDP attempts wide-spread the technology application for
both grid connected and isolated island electrification.

Indonesia faces rapidly increasing electricity demand. Annual

electricity sales growth forecasted at rate of 7%, from 2015 to
2024.
The Government of Indonesia 2025 target is to achieve a
national electrification ratio of 95 percent and to increase the
renewable energy in the primary energy mix to 23%.
In particular the government has set 2025 targets to increase
the countrys total installed wind capacity to 970 MW and
national solar capacity to 800 - 1,000 MW.
Two potential areas for renewable energy growth exist in
wind energy and rooftop solar PV systems, but still need
government regulations to deploy.

Microgrids are modern, small-scale versions of the

centralized electricity system.
Smart microgrids are an ideal way to integrate renewable
resources on the community level and allow for customer
participation in the electricity enterprise
The transformation from centralized to distributed energy
resources brings new challenges for metering, pricing,
communication, and distribution.
We strive to optimize the combination of power networks
and communication networks (so called smart microgrids)
by self-organizing algorithms and mechanisms.
Smart Microgrid applications with PV 500 kWp and battery
500 kWh has been installed in Sumba, East Nusatenggara.

Changing landscape of the electric utility grid:

It helps to integrate intermittent sources of generation
into the electric power grid
Short term load control for a large number of end-use
devices through demand response makes it possible to get
quick load relief to match fluctuations in generation.

Indigenous renewable energy such as wind and solar

power provide significant potential for elecrticification.

Smartgrid technology enables grid connection of
intermittent and fluctuated renewable energy
The feature of smartgrid in bidirectional
communication, automation, and capability both in
outage recovery and integrating renewable energy are
explored to gain maximum benefit in providing
electricity with higher quality and reliability, as well as
stable and continues power supply.
Further works in smatgrid development is required to
address specific local grid issues.
