Prime Minister Narender Modi has won the online reader's poll for TIME Person of

the Year for a second time, beating U.S. President Barack Obama and U.S. Presid
ent-elect Donald Trump, to be voted the most influential figure in 2016.
The question put to voters is whether the contenders deserve to be called the mo
st influential person in the world, for better or worse, in 2016.
The TIME Person of the Year is decided by the magazine's editors and will be ann
ounced on 7 December, but the online poll is a reflection of global public opini
on.
Modi also won the online reader's poll for TIME Person of the Year in 2014, secu
ring more than 16 percent of the almost five million votes cast. But the TIME Pe
rson of the Year went to the Ebola Fighters in 2014, and German Chancellor Angel
a Merkel in 2015.
Modi, who won with 18 percent of the vote in the 2016 poll, trounced Obama, Trum
p and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who all received seven percent of the "y
es" vote, and Russian President, Vladimir Putin, who received six percent of the
votes.
