Greek Civilization

Greek Civilization
Ancient Greek civilization left us its culture, way of living and thinking and its
political views. They were de first people to try and explain what happens scientifically.
The Phoenicians developed a new way of writing which resulted in the alphabet; each
letter represented a phoneme which made it easier for people to write as there were only
twenty-four signs.
As a consequence, the people of society could be involved with the laws and
systems of their city.
Democracy means that the people of the city have a say in how it is run. The
Athenians participated in the government through an Assembly of citizens. In this
Assembly, the citizens could vote for or against the ideas that were proposed by the
government.
Greece was the first country in Europe in which Assemblies of citizens and
Councils of the Elders were stabilised as a legislating body.
Due to the geographical environment of Greece, with its rocky soil and steep
mountains, a lack of communication developed. This created a new concept in History
called a polis or state-city. A polis is an independent city with its own law, army,
economy and way of life.
Social structure in Greece was connected with the idea of citizenship. Citizen is a free
person who has rights and obligations; they have rights to live within the city but they
have to also contribute something back into society.
