Essential Question: How has pollution projects formed over time to help prevent and destroy
pollution?
Working Thesis: Various forms of projects have been formed in order reduce and prevent trash
pollution from growing in our oceans.
Refined Thesis: Ocean pollution projects have been created and proven to prevent and stop
pollution from growing and destroying the world we live in.

The Associated, Press. "Virginia Releasing $21.5M In Storm Water Funding." AP Regional State
Report - Virginia(2014): Points of View Reference Center. Web. 3 Nov. 2016.
This article is going to be used in the research paper because it speaks on the funding
granted to Virginia along with a key pollutant in stormwater. Virginia was granted $21.5 million
to fund several storm water pollution projects. Many of these projects are aiming to eliminate
phosphorus, which is a key pollutant in stormwater. This article will not be used as much as the
other articles, but it will be used to its full potential of facts needed for the research. This article
is relevant to the research because it helps further the knowledge of pollution projects occurring.

2016.
This article is going to be used in the paper because it is another form of a project to help
prevent further pollution damage from being done. This project is targeting storm drains and the
way the water drains and contaminates that areas. The project targets this area because the county
is concerned of the amount of pollution gets swept into the drains from landfills, and then
dumped into local waterways and lakes. This article is relevant to the research because it gives
furthermore attempts taken by people all over the country trying to get pollution levels down and
completely away.

Howgego, Joshua. "It's Massive, It's Rubber And It Cleans The Sea." New Scientist
230.3080 (2016): 12. Academic Search Complete. Web. 27 Oct. 2016.
The article gives information based on The Ocean Cleanup Project. This project was
created by a 20 year old named Lourens Boot who was very active in ocean activities. The more
he was active in the ocean, the more he realized of the amount of pollution floating in the ocean.
Therefore he created this project in hopes to end the situation. They created a massive rubber
contraption in which it uses the oceans tides and waves to counter attack the debri. The debri gets
pushed into the rubber contraption that stretches across the ocean and gets sucked right into it.
This article is relevant to the research because it is another form of a project in attempt to end
pollution issues.

This source is being used as a case to alter the ideas of pollution. This company has
created a way to use pollution as a benefit to the wildlife rather than prevent it. This idea changes
the way to help stop pollution. Rather than making the efforts to clean what is already out, find
ways to stop future pollution from growing. This company made their six pack rings edible for
animals. Instead of animals getting trapped in six pack rings, they can eat them! The article is
relevant to the research because it is the very way stopping pollution in the future may hold.

"'Seabin' Designed By Australian Surfers To Clean Up Marinas, Reduce Ocean Pollution." ABC
Premium News (n.d.):Points of View Reference Center. Web. 20 Sept. 2016.
This article provides another source of ways to clean up pollution. Two surfers created a
product that filters the water in its surrounded diameter. It filters the water automatically, and the
only expected maintenance it requires is cleaning out the trash it picks up. This filter has also
been proven not to harm marine life during its filtering process due to its architectural design.
The project is an ongoing success from its start, and statistically proven that it is only getting
bigger. This article is relevant to the research because it can be tied to the other methods of
stopping pollution from growing, and decreasing its size.

"Wet Weather Cant Dampen Beach Sweeps Volunteer Spirit." SandPaper. N.p., 26 Oct. 2016.
Web. 27 Oct. 2016.
Beach sweeps are a common form now a days to get rid of trash pollution. They are held
locally and mostly annually but the Department of Natural Resources. What most people do not
understand about these beach sweeps are, is how effective and efficient they truly can be. In a
beach sweep in 2015 at fall beach the locals collected many items. After it was completed, the
helpers collected over 174,000 items total, along with over 20,000 being plastics. This article is

relevant to the research because it shows the importance, effectiveness, and relevance of your
local beach sweeps.
