Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate:

Maggie Richardson

Grade and Topic:

3rd grade Mathematics

Mentor Teacher:

Dr. Knowles

Date:

12/4/16

Length of Lesson:
School:

30 minutes

The University Of Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

The students will solve an equation with 100% accuracy, using an array.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
The student will demonstrate their understanding of solving equations using an array, by creating a screencast of
themselves developing an array on MS Word to solve an equation and check their answer that was given to
them by the teacher.
The students should be able to complete this task with 100% accuracy.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.A.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in
situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and
equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.1
MATERIALS:
Worksheet/Checklist

Access to the internet

MS Word

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of each part of an algebraic equation by providing visual representations
and written reflections on the meaning of each part of the equation.

Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.

This lesson is a continuation of TN Mathematics Standard CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.3.

We will refer to the screencast created within this lesson as we continue to explore the multiplication tables and equations.

I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready for
enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction:
1. TTW introduce the lesson by reviewing with the students what arrays are.
2. TTW explain that she wants her students to solve an equation using an array.
3. TTW explain that she wants them to use a screencast to record themselves solving
an equation, using an array they have built on MS Word.

4. TTW give examples of screencasts the students have already seen before and

show them where to go to download it.

5. TTW demonstrate how to build an array using MS Word for the students.

Procedures:
1. After the introduction TTW had out the worksheet/checklist.
2. TSW each move to their own computer.
3. Using the worksheet/checklist as a guide TSW access the link given on the

checklist to download screen-o-matic.

4. TSW open MS Word
5. TSW will use screen-o-matic to record themselves building an array on MS Word
to solve the equation their teacher has given them.
6. TSW include the equation, the steps they took to solve it within the word
document with their array, and include this part within the screen-o-matic.
7. TSW will identify and describe the steps they took to solve the equation on the
worksheet/checklist as well.
8. TSW save the screencast as ProblemSolvingWithArrays on their computer and
upload it to the dropbox.
.

Closure:
1. For closure the students will write an exit ticket about what they liked or did not
like about the lesson.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
Formative assessment in this lesson plan would be analyzing the completion of the students screencast. How
thought out was it, did they solve the equation correctly, and did they follow the checklist.
The assessment is not only about their completion of the task correctly, but it also about their comprehension of
using an array to solve an equation.
MODIFICATIONS:
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those
ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course.
