Rationale/Reflection

NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 6. BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL Candidates prepared in early childhood
degree programs a) identify and conduct themselves as members of the early
childhood profession. They b) know and use ethical guidelines and other
professional standards related to early childhood practice. They c) are continuous,
collaborative learners who demonstrate knowledgeable, reflective and critical
perspectives on their work, making informed decisions that d) integrate knowledge
from a variety of sources. They are e) informed advocates for sound educational
practices and policies (NAEYC, 2010).

Brief Description of Evidence:

As part of my ECED 230 The Exceptional Child course during the Fall 2016
semester, I worked collaboratively with my peers to create a scenario and
participate in a case conference committee. Through the process of developing the
scenario I contributed data to create a profile of the child to highlight his unique
characteristics, academic levels of performance, and behavioral challenges. I
conducted research on legal and ethical guidelines to add content for the case
conference. Additionally, I created artifacts to support the case conference.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through the process of preparing for the case conference I learned how
to search for and use appropriate resources to gain knowledge and insight
into the case conference committee process. I gained knowledge about
Indianas Special Education Law, Article 7, and how children with
exceptionalities qualify for services. One of the most important things I
learned was how a teacher can implement interventive strategies to help
support learning and behavior guidance for every learner in the classroom.
Additionally, I now understand how concepts from Ericksons Theory of
Psychosocial Development can aid in creating supportive strategies to foster
social/emotional development in a child.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the

NAEYC Standard:
This artifact demonstrates my competency in the above standard, because I
applied ethical and professional standards while participating in the case conference
committee. I worked collaboratively with my peers to help develop the scenario,

applying knowledge gained from appropriate resources. I understand the

importance of continually building on the knowledge I gained so I will be better
equipped to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of children with an
array of challenges. I further proved my competency by demonstrating my ability
to listen attentively to the parents concerns, and communicate as an informed
advocate for best practices in education.
