Project Title: Earth Science Decoded Using Stream Table Technology

Earth Science Decoded Using Stream Table Technology

In recent years, technology has become an important and influential part of student
learning. It has been shown to have a positive effect on student understanding and helps students
to make better inferences. By integrating different technology into instruction, the classroom can
move from teacher-dominated to a student-centered learning environment. The previous class
was not able to identify more than half of science terms and concepts. Students have not been
engaged in science or able to use technology to study erosion, weathering, the water cycle,
natural forces, etc. With the use of this grant and implementation of different strategies in the
classroom, such as a Stream Table, iPads, instructional interactives, a Mondopad, the flipped
class concept, and supplies, students will be able to identify, explain, predict, compare, illustrate,
and construct projects using earth science concepts and technology. This includes developing
models, analyzing and interpreting data, and forming hypotheses.
New technology allows students to have more control over their learning. It also allows
teachers to differentiate instruction more efficiently by providing a wider variety of avenues for
learning that reaches all types of learners. During the week of instruction, students will take a
pretest using Survey Monkey on their iPad. They will be provided with a rubric from RubiStar
that explains the expectations and targeted outcomes. The Mondopad will be used to display
Google Slides and the definition of key terms and pictures. The flipped class strategy is used so
class time can consist of high-level discussion and activities, so the students will hear an audio
recording of the notes as the teacher is providing examples and answering questions. Using their
iPad, the class will take notes through Google Docs.
On each day of the week, a video from the YouTube Playlist will be shown. The videos
are also provided on the classroom website to give students the opportunity to watch ahead or
again. A Google Calendar containing the weeks lesson plans will be shared to keep parents and
administrators informed on classroom instruction. The students will play Describe and Graph
Water on Earth, the Push Pin Game, Erosion, Shape It Up, and Gravity on Quizlet. Students will
have the appropriate QR codes in a personalized folder to each interactive. They will watch two
videos on Study Jams called Weathering and Erosion and Landforms and answer questions on
each. Students will construct the Stream Table and perform experiments, to then record and
analyze the data. An example that will be provided is the Sand Dune Erosion Experiment. The
class will record their data and thoughts in a Google Sheets. Google Cardboard will be used so
the students can experience a virtual reality of the different types of landforms. Plickers will be
used as a formative assessment each day to monitor students learning. Using Google Forms at
the end of the week, students will be assessed on the knowledge learned through the week.
Through this grant, technology will transform the classroom environment and procedures
for communication, teaching, and learning. The goal is to increase student learning,
understanding, and achievement, and also to motivate students to learn, encourage collaborative
learning, and help develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
