KINGSTON, R.I. - Not only do URI students think big, but this October they will give big, too. During URIs first ever Community Impact Week, students will be partnering with St. Augustines Church to give back to the community October 3-7.
More than 150 public relations students will aid local nonprofits including the Rhody Outpost and the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale during Community Impact Week.
Students will be volunteering their time and nonperishable goods to the Rhody Outpost, which provides food to students who are less fortunate. In addition, students will be donating to the warm clothing drive for the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale, which provides basic necessities to local those with lower-income. Lastly, students will be volunteering at local non-profits of their choice.
Public relations classes will also be creating a Strategic PR plan for the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale to increase the nonprofits awareness and visibility on the URI campus.
Community Impact Week is both beneficial to the PR students participating as well as the non-profits involved. Communication Studies Department Chair, Dr. Kevin McClure encourages PR students to participate during the week.
This is a great opportunity for our public relations students to share their time, talents and knowledge with worthy, local nonprofits, McClure said. According to Dr. McClure, Community Impact Week gives students a chance to give back to their community and apply information obtained in the classroom.
Senior PR student, Marli Silver is participating by donating a winter coat to the warm clothing drive for the Salvation Army.
Participating in Community Impact Week allows students as well as myself to engage in the community and help those who may be less fortunate Silver said. As a PR major, in the future, I may wind up working in non-profit PR and there is no better way to learn about local non-profits than to engage with those around me.
