Exercise 5: Normal Distribution (3 punts)

The agroindustrial complex Drink Team produces grapes for wine production, and it employs
1,000 workers. The management of the firm figures out that during the grape-picking season each
worker picks an average of 50 kgs. of grapes with a standard deviation of 3 kgs and an approximately
normal standard distribution.
Question 29: What percentage of workers produce less than a worker who collects a standardized
amount of 0.45?
Question 30: The firm wants to give a prize to all workers producing more than 57 kgs., and has
a budget of 1,000 euros for this. How much will each of the worker getting a prize receive?
Question 31: The less productive workers will be moved to truck loading tasks. If all workers
picking less than 43 kgs. a day are moved to these tasks, how many workers will be moved to truck
loading tasks?

Exercise 6: Unemployment and marriage (3 punts)

The distribution of sex and marriage is one of the most relevant indicators unemployment.
During 1992 the number of unemployed people, according the the Active Population Survey (EPA,
Encuesta de Poblacio Activa) was 3,047 thousands of people, from which 1,494 were women. On
the other hand, within married women the percentage of unemployed women was 27%, and between
married men the percentage of unemployed men was 41%. On the basis of information:
Question 32: Construct the table with absolute and relative frequencies of the joint distribution
of sex and marriage.
Question 33: Do you think that marriage and sex is related for unemployed people?

Let us consider two numerical variables, X and Y . We have the following data for these variables:
Mean of X = 2,
Standard deviation of X = 2,

Mean of Y = 2
Standard deviation of Y = 0.5

Covariance between X and Y = 1

Question 34: Compute the regression line where X is the explanatory variable and Y is the
dependent variable.

following time series graph:

Question 39: The farmers have obtained worse returns from their crops during the last years and
they attribute this to a progressive fall in the volume of rain during the last three quarters. If V is
the variable that describes the rain, and t = 1, ..., 17, we are given the following information:
1. The covariance between V and t is equal to SV t = 0, 63
2. The standard deviations of V and t are SV = 1.46 and St = 5 respectively.
3. The means of V and t are V = 3.88 and t = 9. respectively.
Do you think that the farmers are right? Justify numerically your answer.
