Cadaver Visit

When we went to the laboratory for the cadaver visit, I felt the excitement to get
to see the human parts from the dead bodies themselves because throughout my
anatomy and physiology class, we only get to study with pictures and figures, not the
real organs; until we arrived in the designated laboratory, I started to think of the lives of
the dead bodies we are going to study. I know that it is all for scientific purposes but I
cant help but from time to time think about those dead persons in front of me. The visit
supplied me with a lot of scientific lessons as we tried to identify the parts of the heart,
but it also gave me valuable life lessons.
During the visit, the class started to identify those internal organs, the digestive
system, respiratory system and even the skull. This is very advantageous especially for
the students who study health-allied programs so they will be able to see first-hand the
different organs and learn how they function. The laboratory assistants also taught us
how to handle the cadavers properly and reminded us that it is very important to pay
respect to these cadavers as they are once like us before. The visit greatly inspired me
to continue learning about the human body and to keep on improving so after 2 years, I
can be a great pharmacist that can dispense and compound proper medications to
different patient needs and hopefully continue my studies and pursue medicine. I also
learned during the visit, the crucial job of doctors, especially surgeons. I came to this
realization because if I am having quite a hard time only in identifying human body parts
from dead persons, what more if a surgeon is trying to cure a certain body part of a
breathing and alive person. My admiration to these doctors increased even more
because of this visit.
Throughout the visit, I think about the lives of these dead bodies remembering
that they are once also like us, they can eat, sleep, talk, learn and perform other basic
human activities. I also thought of their families and loved ones and cant help to wonder
if they are aware that their loved one is currently being studied my health students. Also,
I imagined myself in their places and thought to myself that if I am watching my body
being studied by students, I will be proud to say that even in my death, I contribute to
the development of medical practice and continual research. We also learned the
possible cause of death of those cadavers by means of evidences that until now is
visible, examples are hemorrhages. We also visited the anatomy museum which
contains real body parts to be viewed and studied by the students. We also saw bodies
with the different disorders that can lead to death (e.g. Babies with hydrocephalus,
conjoined twins etc.). Studying cadavers is very helpful for me personally as I was able
to visualize the processes that occurs inside our body. As always, I was fascinated on
how life works scientifically and learned to value the importance of life like how we could
be breathing one day, and could be dead in an instance. Overall, this experience will be
something that I will remember and will consider as a milestone as I continue to learn
and Improve in my chosen field, Pharmacy.
