Lesson Title & Big Idea*: Life is bigger than ourselves; we must be aware of our surroundings and
the bigger picture such as nature and how we affect it and it affects us.
Lesson Overview/Summary*: In this lesson students will integrate visual arts, as it will be the
main part of the project. To begin, I want students to observe what they see in the night sky and
make sketches of what they see at least two times before we begin this project. This is something
that could easily be done over the weekend and a family activity. I want students to recognize
that the moon is not always the same shape and to recognize patterns in where the sun usually
sets and rises. Another concept I would like my students to start to become familiar with is that
the sun is a star and that even though it isnt visible at night, there are lots of other stars visible
at night. The art project that the students will be doing is first creating the different sizes of the
moon and also showing how the moon travels across the sky during the night.
Key Concepts (3-4): What you want the students to know.*
1. Visual Art: I want the students to know how to draw the
moon in different forms and paint successfully.
2. Literacy: I want the students to be able to make predictions
about the book, Happy Birthday, Moon, and be able to talk
about what is real in the book versus what is not realistic.
3. Science: I want the students to be able to notice the moon,
sun, and stars and be able to describe them and notice any
patterns.
