Pre- Observation:
There is only one instructor for the whole facility that does any amount of
planning and then there is her staff that follows her directions on what she wants
done.
Data:
My cooperating Instructor shared her planning techniques with me. When she first
started she only taught basketball classes for younger children. Eventually when
the programs expanded and she was promoted to director she made more classes
such as all sports, tennis lessons, hoopquest, dodgeball, basketball skills and
drills, soccer league, Friday night fun nights, lacrosse lessons, volleyball league,
etc. My director was a basketball player in college, and she used her knowledge of
being taught for so many years herself and applied it to teaching the children
fundamentals of basketball. Using this and from research online and from
professionals she applied it to soccer as well. Eventually the two classes merged
into one and formed All Sports. This class included both soccer and basketball,
and also included hockey, baseball, kickball, football, capture the flag, and gaga.
My cooperating Instructor doesnt use a purchased or set curriculum as she makes
up most of the classes as they go trying new things and improving upon old
things. This child care center is not the average child care that most people work
at. This building is a gym and our child care is for the children of the parents that
are working out using the facility. Classes were implemented to help increase
revenue by charging members for the classes listed above. For almost two years
now we have been doing All Sports and most of the things have changed are small
things to make class move smoother and easier for both the instructors and the
children participating. My cooperating Instructor doesnt attend a common
planning meeting or a grade level planning meeting because our age groups
include ages 4-12 and she is the only one who works as a director. She has no one
else to have a meeting with that would that would help plan for instruction.
Having another person to have a meeting with would help lessen the work load.

However the personality of my cooperating instructor would not work well with
others telling her how to do her job. My cooperating Instructor plans monthly. She
will come up with plans for both the children and the adults of the club. These
activities may include an instructional lacrosse class or a basketball league for
adults to play in. These classes usually last from one month to two months
depending on the size of the class and how often people sign up for it.
The
children arent involved in the planning process. This tells me that the children
will be less motivated to participate in the activity that they are currently doing. If
they were to involve the children by possibly giving them options then they would
feel some power and enjoy that they may have helped make a decision for their
peers. My cooperating teacher doesnt have to have her plans approved by anyone
because she is required and expected to come up with the plans and have them out
there for sign up for the members to sign their children or themselves up for. The
closest thing to a director or principal for my cooperating teacher would be the
general manager. However he does not know about children as well as my
cooperating instructor. The only thing she has to go for from him is approval to
buy things for the children such as a new portable basketball hoop or footballs.
VII.

Analysis:
Due to there being only one instructor it is easy to see why that somethings dont
workout. Its because there is only one person who makes decisions and that
person doesnt get any other input that would make those ideas better.

VIII.

Recommendations:
There best idea would be to hire someone else who also knows how to plan and
make good decisions that would be best for the children, parents, and staff. This
would solve the problem about biased ideas being implemented in the program.

IX.

Post Observation:
While the instructor is good she needs someone else who is on her level that can
tell her whether or not ideas that put out there are good are not from a
professionals perspective.
