1. User stops or suspends application. This can be automated using the TSM PRESNAPSHOT option.
2. User executes FlashCopy Manager command to perform a snapshot of volumes containing the application files.
3. User restarts or resumes application. This can be automated using the TSM POSTSNAPSHOT option.
4. Snapshot is optionally sent to TSM by FCM
VSS snapshots are mapped to production/offload host only when needed , they are no longer
mapped by default
New option in FCM 3.2, which works for clustered and non-clustered systems
Avoids consuming limited host system resources to maintain a large number of snapshots
In VMware/ESX environments SCSI device limits are not exhausted

Other Enhancements
Snapshot backups of the volumes to be stored on the TSM Server in TSM - image format
Improved Exchange 2010 Data Base Availability Group (DAG) Support
- Backup to Common DAG Node
Back up DAG databases to a common location
Manage DAG backups using a common policy
Restore DAG backups to any active DAG member
- Single Instance Backup
Coordinate backups between DAG members so that only one copy is backed up per backup cycle

Similar capabilities at the DR site to what FCM has today at the primary site
Extends FCM to allow FlashCopy / Snapshot management in the DR site
Offload workload from production disk subsystem
Supports DB2 , Oracle, SAP (DB2 or Oracle), Custom Applications/File Systems
Supported Disk Subsystems: XIV, SVC and Storwize V7000
Supported Operating Systems: AIX, Linux, Solaris and HP-UX
Leveraging XIVs Remote Mirror in synchronous or asynchronous mode
Leveraging SVC/V7000 Metro (synchronous) or Global Mirror (asynchronous)
Backup Flow:
1. FCM at the Production site sets the Database in backup mode
2. FCM triggers snapshot at the DR Site
3. Optional Backup into TSM takes place at the DR site
10
Use Cases for application consistent copies from target of the remote mirror
relationships on SVC, Storwize V7000 and XIV
Use snapshot at DR site as Backup for Data Protection
Consolidated Data Protection at the DR site
Restored to a takeover host at the DR site after a take over of the production
server, e.g. in case of disaster or maintenance taks
Mounted to an optional backup server at the DR site and sent to a TSM Server
Used for cloning of the database instance at DR site
Consolidate multiple backups (single or multiple primary sites) to the DR site
11
Unix-based FCM support for IBM N Series / NetAPP Disk Sub Systems
FCM on UNIX now supports: SVC, V7000, DS8000, DS6000, XIV and N Series
Supports VMware, Oracle, DB2, SAP, Custom Applications, Unix/Linux file systems
FCM Support for IBM N series / NetApp devices as their primary storage for supported
applications and databases (especially VMWare)
Support for Data Protection and Cloning
Volumes can be Fibre Channel or iSCSI attached

FCM 3.1
Manages VMs one at a time, customers cannot attach/detach multiple VMs concurrently
FCM 3.2:
Allows concurrent attach of multiple VMs from the same backup
Supports granular detach operations which allow to detach VMs at the VM level so that
other attached VMs within the same backup are not affected
Allows concurrent operations while VMs of a backup are attached, e.g. restore and tape
backup
Maintains meta information of attached VMDKs in its internal repository, which will allow
additional attach operations for the same backup and concurrent operations
Provides a new view in the GUI that displays all attached VMs and gives the possibility to
detach virtual disks on VM level granularity

- Backs up non TSM for disks while TSM for agents back up disks specific to them
Allows individual disks to be restored to an existing VM
- Existing VM must be powered off
- Disks not specified remain unchanged on existing VM
- Can specify that just the VM configuration information be restored

Recovery
36
Looking at various options that could involve integration of product features from
TSM for VE for common disaster recovery across all VMs
TSM for Mail/Databases/Custom Applications for application awareness and operational recovery
37
Supported for Windows VM (VSS Writer is being called) for MS SQL Server and MS Exchange
TSM B/A Client (datamover) triggers log truncation at VMware snapshot time
Injection via Web Services API at runtime
Allows for consistent Application/Database support in Windows VMs
No TSM for . product required inside the VM
Limited functions for Point in Time restores, restores only possible to the time when the snapshot
occurred, no log roll forward
No log handling in this scenario
-> Running TSM for inside the VMs is still functionally superior, therefore still recommended
38
Starting with VMware 4.0, VMware introduce the concept of a vApp container, which
is a group of virtual machines that are managed as a single object
vApp simplifies the management of complex multi-tiered application running on
multiple virtual machines
Another container in the vApp hierarchy is the Resource Pool which provides a
mechanism to partition available CPU and memory resource of ESXi host and
Clusters
TSM for VE 6.3 can backup virtual machines contained in vApps, Resource Pools,
Clusters and VM Folders but on restore we fail to return these virtual machine back to
their original locations, this is due to our failure to save the necessary data
