My nephew is 6 years old and has autism.

So reading is a challenge to begin with but he is a

very determined little boy. His favorite book he has been working hard at with me, in
school, and at home is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Below is the reading he did to me which is
more than a minute, he didnt want to stop at a minute so I let him go a little longer. I had
to make sure there was no technology or timers around him because he is easily distracted.
We sat at a table in his room where there would be the least amount of distraction.

A told B and B told C, Ill meet you at the top of the coconut tree. Whee! said D to E F
G, Ill beat you to the top of the coconut tree. Chicka chicka boom boom! Will there be
enough room? Here comes H up the coconut tree, and I and J and tag-along K, all on their
way up the coconut tree. Chicka chicka boom boom! Will there be enough room? Look whos
coming! L M N O P! And Q R S! And T U V! Still more W! And X Y Z! The whole alphabet
up the Oh, no! Chicka chicka BOOM! BOOM! Skit Skat skoodle doot. Flip flop flee.
Everybody running to the coconut tree.

The highlighted words are the words he just couldnt grasp throughout the reading. He
would do is best to sound out each highlighted word and if he didnt get them I would say
the word and have him repeat it and keep reading. By the third time we read the book a lot
of the highlighted words were still a struggle but he was sounding them out and getting
them by himself.
