Course Competencies
Course Competency 1: Demonstrated a professional attitude and work ethic.
(Learner demonstrates responsibility, regular attendance, a positive attitude, confidentiality, professionalism,
positive adult/children interactions, appropriate dress and a willingness to complete assignment tasks.)
I feel like I show a strength in this competency in my practicum. I respect professional attitude and show
a strong work ethic in willing to try new things. In my practicum I dressed accordingly, showed up when
I was supposed to, kept everything professional and confident. I was willing to learn new things when the
opportunity approached.
Course Competency 2: Adhere to roles and responsibilities of an instructional assistant
(Learners follows teacher directions, assists teacher in instruction, asks for clarification, communicates
concerns with cooperating teacher and NWTC instructor, and does not participate in activities he/she is not
trained to do)
I followed this competency well, I am not afraid to ask questions when I do not understand and curious
about the different programs they had at the practicum site. Two new things I had to ask about was
something called WIN and Daily 5s.
Course Competency 4: Assist teacher in preparing for the instructional/evaluation process within the
classroom. (Learner offers ideas to cooperating teacher, follows tasks assigned, completes tasks accurately and
precisely, completes tasks without direction, and learner is open to feedback.)
I took this practicum to really take in the school environment and figure out what a para does in the
actual field. I have a lot to work on in this competency in the way of becoming comfortable in the setting
and understand the expectations in the classroom to offer ideas and complete tasks without direction. I
really look for feedback on my progress so I can learn from what the teachers have to say.
Course Competency 5: Utilize preventative management techniques when working with individual or
small groups of students. (Learner carries out discipline/intervenes firmly and without anger, applies the 5
Cs of Discipline, and applies natural and logical consequences for behavior intervention.)
I was really put to the test twice that I can recall where one student would test me with negative
behaviors. Both times the teacher did step in so I would like to become a better role model that can just
stand my ground without others jumping in to help me. I have more progress to make in this competency,
but I feel a lot of it will come with being comfortable and confident in my work setting.

Course Competency 6 : Assist in classroom maintenance. (Learner assists in maintaining the classroom,
clerical tasks, daily rituals and routines, and assists in organizing classroom or small group materials.
I am OCD when it comes to any type of environment that is not mine and will take the initiative to
organize the classroom and materials! I love to keep areas as clean as possible especially when people
need to find things fast and efficient. My progress on this competency seems to have about stayed the
same because I struggle to see messes and love sticking to routines.
Course Competency 7 : Determine ways to deal with problems that may occur in the school setting.
(Learner is able to share ways to deal with student issues; learner takes into account the best interest of
students, and learner uses ethical and moral judgment when deciding a plan of action in dealing with problems)
I did not have much of an opportunity to deal with this competency so I have a lot of progress to
accomplish yet. The Teachers dealt with 99% of the student issues.
Course Competency 8 : Develop a personal professional development plan. (Learner set and reflects on
goals, learner begins to collect artifacts for professional portfolio.)
I need to work on staying more organized to collect artifacts. I have made progress in this competency in
the terms of reflecting on my goals throughout my journals but need to work on keeping my own stuff
organized.
Course Competency 9: Apply affective behavior when interacting with children.
(Learner demonstrates empathy, respect, honesty, learner is non-judgmental and values self and others.)
From working with residents and families on a daily basis I demonstrate this competency every day. This
is something that I am able to work on every day and is party of my daily life. It is a little bit
different when working with children compared to the elderly but is something I am a true
believer of.
Course Competency 10: Implement teacher developed instructional plans.
(Learner reviews teacher instructional plans, learners gathers teaching materials prior to student arrival,
learner asks for clarification, learner informs teacher of completed tasks, learner submits student progress)
I worked on this as much as I was able to. I have a lot of progress to make yet. A lot of this will come with
becoming familiar with the classroom to know what I can prepare ahead of time and know where the
materials are, be able to comment on plans, and know the students well enough to report on them. I do
however ask for clarification when it is needed.
What do you consider to be your major strengths as a prospective instructional assistant?
I feel that I am very understanding person and will jump into any situation that I need to. I am always
giving a helping hand where I can.
In what areas would you to grow as an Instructional Assistant?
I would love to grow in comfort in the school setting and face my fears and get outside my comfort zone
to become a more open Para.
