Choice of Content Presentation

This check for understanding will be
a homework assignment for
students after lesson 2, when
students should have a solid
understanding of verbal and
nonverbal communication.
Tiering
I will administer an exit card to the
whole class at the end of lesson 2.
Using the results of the exit card, I
will group students into tiered
groups for their small group
discussions of Raymond Carvers
Cathedral.
Group 1 will be comprised of
students who are having trouble
understanding the concepts of
verbal and nonverbal
communication. I will spend the
most time with these students
because they need the most
support in reaching the KUDs

related to verbal and nonverbal

communication.
Group 2 will include students who
seem to understand verbal and
nonverbal language in everyday
life, but have trouble identifying
and analyzing it in literature.
Group 3 will include students who
show competence in analyzing
verbal and nonverbal language in
literature and in everyday life, but
struggle with the disunion that can
occur between intention and
reception of communication.
Group 4 will be composed of
students who demonstrate a firm
understanding of all communication
concepts and need to be
challenged by thinking about the
craft of writing, especially how it
relates to communication. After
small group discussions all groups
will share out the big ideas and one
big question from their
discussions that we can start our
whole group discussion with.
RAFT
For the last half of the unit,
students will be working on their
summative assessment. For this
assessment, students will select a
role (actor, director, or
screenwriter), work in a format
(acting, directors notes,
screenplay), gear it towards an
audience, and maintain the topic of
Raymond Carvers Cathedral.
