Teacher Guidance Notes

This story should be taught first orally in the
language of instruction so that learners can interact
with the key messages in a language that they
understand well. The main objective is to use the
story to teach students important skills, values and
behaviours for life. If the langauge of instruction at
your school is not English, you should prepare the
lesson by translating the story into the learners'
mother tongue. After introducing and discussing the
story in the learners' first langauge, the chart can also
be used to teach English language and literacy. For
example, you can tell the same story in English, teach
the key words, and have the learners copy short
sentences using the words from the chalkboard.

Activities:
My name is Daniel.
I live here with my family.
We work together in our garden.
We help our mother.
My sister gathers tomatoes.
My brother chases the birds away.
We are happy.

A. In small groups, have the children draw

pictures of their favourite plants and animals.
Each learner shows his/her picture and asks
the others, "Where does a ________ grow?"
"Where does a ______ live?" and so on.
B. In pairs, ask the learners to tell each other
three things that make them happy. Ask
them to report on their friend's answers, for
example "Listening to stories makes
_______ happy."
C. Play a game of animal sounds. Demonstrate
first by asking what sounds various farm
animals (chickens, ducks, goats). Then invite
learners to come to the front of the class and
demonstrate. Let the others guess by writing
the name of the animal on the board.
