Dear Ms. Capp:
This letter is in response to your letter dated June 20, 2016, cosigned by Mr.
Michael Baldwin, State Co-Chair of the Everglades Coalition. In your letter you request
that the US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and the South Florida Water Management
District (SFWMD) immediately begin planning for additional projects to provide storage,
treatment, and conveyance of Lake Okeechobee water south to Everglades National
.
As you stated the Corps and the SFWMD are starting two new studies this year,
one northeast and one southwest of Lake Okeechobee, which may identify
opportunities for projects that would provide additional storage capacity for water from
Lake Okeechobee. An additional study south of the lake is planned to start in 2021.
The Army is prepared to work with the State of Florida to advance the schedule for the
study south of Lake Okeechobee.
An identical letter is being sent to Mr. Baldwin. Thank you for your continued
interest in the Army Civil Works program.
