Job Summary:
First Nations Technical Institute (FNTI) is the largest and one of the longest running Indigenous owned and
operated institute of advanced learning in Ontario. The Dean, Teaching Excellence & Learning will be a
member of the academic management team and will focus on ensuring FNTI remains a learner focussed and
centred, Indigenous, advanced education institution. The Dean, Teaching Excellence & Learning, is
responsible for developing and implementing strategic directions and vision for their department. This position
will report to the Vice President, Academic (VPA).
Duties:
Under the direction of the Vice President, Academic (VPA), the key responsibilities of the Dean, Teaching
Excellence & Learning will include, but are not limited to the following:
Ensure the current and future training and educational needs of learners are met by providing ongoing
review of courses and programs;
Collaborate on innovative strategies to increase FNTIs recognition of excellence;
Manage communication with community partners to identify new collaborative opportunities and
feedback regarding improvements to existing delivery model;
Determine the need for modification of existing courses/programs and the introduction of new
courses/programs to reflect new technologies, economic and market influences, external partnership
requirements and changing employment opportunities;
Keep abreast of changes to regulations and guidelines that affect course/program offerings and advise
the VPA of any implications of these changes;
Recommend curriculum, revisions and additions and approve course outlines;
As part of the academic management team, provide academic and administrative leadership for faculty
and staff involved in the development and delivery of all courses and programs offered by the college;
Oversee the completion of annual comprehensive program reviews;
Lead internal audit practice as it pertains to quality improvement;
Develop key performance indicators and implement strategies to ensure their improvement;
Ensure that FNTI meets accreditation requirements;
Ensures comprehensive program reviews occur on a timely basis and facilitates decision-making
regarding program changes;
Coordinate and prepare program scheduling with the Director, Learner Success & Service Delivery;
Participates in the research, development and implementation of high quality new and existing
programs and programming;
Leads the internal review/program approval process for all proposed new certificate, diploma and
degree programs;
Contribute to the academic well-being of the school through effective planning, administration of the
schools academic programs;
Contribute to marketing efforts required to build and sustain the school programs;
Oversees and guides articulation and transfers agreements as well as the academic pathways
development process;
Promote effective us of technology in program delivery;
Develop pathways and ladder programming that lead to learning success;
Assist in development of the provision of transition programming;
Participate in the development of articulation agreements or partnerships with other educational
institutions;
Ensure college retention and graduation is incorporated into planning;
Maintain a high level of staff and faculty performance through effective training, developing and
evaluating;
Responsible for supporting faculty appointments;
Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate academic and related activities of FNTI faculty;
Develop a strategy to attract and retain highly qualified faculty
Qualifications:
Relevant university degree from an accredited post-secondary institution with a minimum of 4 years
experience in working in a post-secondary environment is preferred;
Must understand the importance of creating accessible, relevant and empowering programming for
Indigenous learners that is founded in Indigenous knowledge;
Experience teaching in a post-secondary environment an asset;
Must have a thorough understanding of indigenous post-secondary issues and opportunities;
Must be able to demonstrate an understanding and commitment to teaching excellence and quality
education in an indigenous college;
Must have an in-depth knowledge of Ontario Post-Secondary education and quality assurance policies,
frameworks and standards;
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Ministerial Consent and Consent Renewal application
and alignment with the Post-Secondary Education Quality Assessment Board (PEQAB) standards and
benchmarks, or similar related experience;
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the application of the Ministry of Advanced Education and
Skills Development (MAESD), Ontario Qualifications Framework;
Must be able to demonstrate and articulate the importance of education as a reconciliation tool;
Outstanding interpersonal communication, public speaking and presentation skills;
Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills;
Experience and proficiency with MS Office Suites;
Valid Ontario class G drivers license; ability and willingness to travel
