Davis, Glenn. "Why Is Reading Important?" Learn To Read. N.p., Dec. 2014. Web. 02 Dec.
2016. The author of this source has many good points that are valid. Mr. Davis mentions
that reading is important to get a good job and teaches people how to interact with one
another. Additionally, he mentions that video games and TV are entertainment. Then he
proceeds to explain the difference between entertainment and reading by using root
words. The author also goes on to mention that the three main reasons that people learn to
read are: read the bible, read the newspaper, and help teach their children. Mr. Davis
mentions that without the ability to read, people will have no routes to advance
themselves or their children. I think this source is quality because it is not scholarly but an
average person knows the importance of reading.
Donoghue, Denis. The Practice of Reading. New Haven: Yale UP, 1998. Print. The author of this
piece demonstrates the proper ways to read and test your ability to read. There is one
section which I think relates quite well to why reading is not as prominent as it once was.
There are three types of reading: intensive, extensive and pleasure reading. Many people
have been reading wrong and the author tries to explain the correct ways to read but also
make sure brain stimulation is increased. With increased intensity in reading, the reader
will be challenged but also learning and thinking immediately after they read. Mr.
Donoghue also mentions something about writing papers about the findings after a piece

has been read. I think this is a credible source because it comes from one of the most
touted universities in the nation.
Garnett, Wilma Leslie. Why Read? The Elementary English Review, vol. 19, no. 4, 1942, pp.
122146. www.jstor.org/stable/41383352. In this article, the author immediately states the
benefits of reading and how it stimulates the mind and people often formulate brilliant
ideas. Also, people can have a way of connecting their thoughts and can relate it to real
situations. Ms. Garnett gives two major points about reading which are: Schools should
provide material that stimulates the brain and the reader should reflect upon what they
have read to make connections. The author also makes a statement about how students
who were reading and reflecting often performed better in school. Additionally, the author
wants the teachers to give the students the best chance to succeed after school.
How Books Can Change Your Mind. Perf. Lisa Bu. How Books Can Change Your Mind. TED
Talks, 31 May 2013. Web. 30 Nov. 2016. Lisa Bu is a Chinese immigrant who moved to
the United States in 1995. She tells the viewer about how she struggled finding what she
wanted to do with her life. In China, she had two options, an athlete or an engineer. She
wanted to sign in the Chinese opera but that did not work out. When she moved to the
United States, she struggled making friends so she started reading books. She read all
types of genres and began expanding her vocabulary and knowledge. Eventually it led her
to find her way in life to become successful. I think this is reliable because TED talks has
high quality programs. This source fits well with my human experience because books are
overlooks and undervalued today.
Oakley, Mark. Practicum. Mark Oakley, 20 Sept. 2016. Web. 1 Dec. 2016. From my practicum
field notes I can conclude that every time I went to the tenth floor that the study room was

never completely full and I think about two out of nine times that there was no one inside
the rare book collection room. This says something about how people do not appreciate
the availability of such rich history. I also think in part because many people do not enjoy
reading which in that case many people would not even go to the library. Additionally, I
think this source is quality because I saw the number of people or a lack of number of
people that were looking at rare books.
