Millions of Americans suffer from severe stress and anxiety on a daily basis. Stress is
most common in young adults. Most of the time, people who experience stress are not
aware how to deal with it or of the negative impacts that it has on their mental and
physical well-being.
Being mindful can have numerous positive impacts, including reduced stress and
greater mental health. Mindfulness brings awareness to the present moment and
relaxation by helping us understand our thoughts and feelings, rather than worrying
about the future. Being mindful has the power to eliminate negative thinking and raise
awareness when it comes to the feelings of ourselves and others around us.

The lack of mindfulness is a problem amongst to our society. People are quick to worry and
stress rather than being aware of their surroundings and taking into consideration their mental
and physical health. Mindfulness does not need to be increased in just one specific age
demographic, but in people of all ages across the board. Mindfulness not only decreases stress
but it increases the ability to learn and maintain information.

something.
Mindful practices, consisting of sitting in a comfortable position, attentive
listening to a single sound (i.e., a resonating sound instrument, such as a
bell or chime), and then using the breath as a focal point for being mindful in the present moment
are seen as central to the program with the intention of enhancing childrens self-awareness,
focused attention, self-regulation, and stress reduction. In the ME curriculum, these mindful
attention training exercises are to be practiced three times per day (3 min for each practice,
which are then extended to longer periods for the students) throughout the duration of the
program. Additionally, affirmations and visualizations are practiced in conjunction with the
mindful practices with the aim to foster optimism and positive affect. (8, para.4) Introducing
mindfulness at a young age can reduce the overall effects of stress as individuals age; people will
already have coping mechanisms to aid with any complications they may face.
History
In 1979, Jon Kabat-Zinn founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. The idea of
Mindfulness had come from the ancient Buddhist religion. People have turned to mindfulness
to seek mental and physical peace and as a way to maintain mental and
physical health despite all of the chaos that maybe going on in our

-Stress reduction
Many philosophical, spiritual, and psychological traditions emphasize
the importance of the quality of consciousness for the maintenance and
enhancement of well-being (Wilber, 2000). Despite this, it is easy to
overlook the importance of consciousness in human well-being
because almost everyone exercises its primary capacities, that is, attention and awareness.
