strata is built by merging multiple exposures


into one new image that is more than the
sum of the original, individual shots. By
superimposing single images on top of
one another, the layers of light alternately
enhance or cancel out the branches,
abstracting nature into an arbitrary, but still
interconnected, realm.
I see strata as a reflection of the philosophic
concept of rhizomes, and as a visualization
of the process of memory: memories are
accumulated over time, impacted by ongoing
experiences, and perpetually in flux.

mysterious, that we are inclined to
describe them as unreal realities.

Sometimes natural phenomena can become


so estranged and mysterious, that we are
inclined to describe them as unreal realities.
It might be the extraordinary shape of a
tree, a mountain, a shadow, a cloud or the
mirroring reflection of nature in a lake, but
it is foremost the unfamiliarity of the natural
aesthetics of reality.
The photos published here literally refer to
such an unfamiliar natural phenomenon,
a phenomenon that appears twice a year
during the end of the autumn and the
beginning of spring for the period of one
week in an area in the Swiss Alps. During
the winter season a village is permanently
covered by the shadow of a high mountain in
the west, which eliminates all direct sunlight.
A week before darkness falls, the sun
appears one more time after it has set every
evening. A mysterious phenomenon known
as Abendsonne.

as attempts to capture these temporary
phenomena and atmospheres of nature
within the still medium of photography.

Abendsonne has been on show at Julitte


Jongma Gallery in Amsterdam,
The Netherlands in the spring of 2009.

By seeking for the absence of human


intervention, by waiting for the climax of
the temporal aesthetic and by pushing the
camera to its technical limits De Ridders
photographs become both exotic reports
as autonomous artificial worlds.
The photos published here are visual
repetitions of the area where the
Abendsonne appears, at a lake, known for
its flat, almost mirror-like surface, taken
under different natural circumstances and
originally presented in different printed
scales. This juxtaposition of difference and
equality evokes questions about authenticity,
originality, reality and the representation of
reality within the medium of photography.
An ambiguous reference to the unreal reality
of the Abendsonne.

I make pictures that navigate, and trespass


upon, the boundary between the private and
the public; the hidden and the manifest; the
dark and the light. I wait for a moment that
offers a glimpse into a secret inner world.
In both my images and my prints, I court
the messy, the fragile, the raw and the
vulnerable. I hand apply silver emulsion to
Japanese gampi in order to achieve a result
that is tactile and sculptural, flawed but
lovely. Like my subjects, each print is unique
in its characteristics and imperfections.

Alec Soth (b. 1969) is a photographer born


and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He
is the recipient of several major fellowships
from the Bush, McKnight and Jerome
Foundations and was awarded the 2003
Santa Fe Prize for Photography. His work
is represented in major public and private
collections, including the San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine
Arts Houston and the Walker Art Center
in Minneapolis. Soths photographs have
been featured in numerous solo and group
exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney and
So Paulo Biennials. His first monograph,
Sleeping by the Mississippi, was published
by Steidl in 2004 to critical acclaim. Since
then Soth has published NIAGARA (2006),
Fashion Magazine (2007), Dog Days, Bogot
(2007) and The Last Days of W (2008). Soth is
represented by Gagosian Gallery in New York,
Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis, and is a
member of Magnum Photos.

I follow personal and universal memories.


Memories containing traces of innocence,
of the values I was raised upon, values on
which I look now as an adult that cant help
but feeling the tremendous affect of the
changes our world has gone though.
I test the current reality and compare it to
my youth in search of traces of similarities.
In doing this I find myself realizing I have
lost my innocence, my morals and my
connection to my origin.
I collect images and find in them traces of
the values I based my young life upon, and
are no longer.
I choose the Chocolate Polaroid because
of his reddish-brownish tones that reminds
the sepia toner, for nostalgic atmosphere.

Yaniv Waissa

Yaniv Waissa was born in Haifa, Israel


in 1978. Yaniv graduated his degree in
photography and digital media at the
Hadassah College in Jerusalem in 2004.
After college, Yaniv continued to study
photography in a post graduate program
at the Musrara School in 2007.
Yaniv Waissas works were exhibited in
few solo and group exhibitions in Israel
and abroad and also published in several
international magazines.
Yaniv Waissa works and lives in Jerusalem.
