Application Letter.

Hello my name is Trevor Hayes and I am applying for Systems Engineer Sr

position. I am close to completing my bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering
from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. This position interested me because I would
like to go into a field in which problem solving and working alongside other
engineers to improve and develop complex mechanical systems. The use of
planning accompanied with programmable software to reach an end result, has
always interested me.
Throughout the last two years, I have been accepted to multiple internships
which gave me a brief glimpse into different types of industrial processes. My first
internship, Scepter Manufacturing, produces plastic fuel cans for recreational use.
My responsibility over my summer internship at Scepter was to help the Process
Engineer, Bryan Estep design a new layout for the flow of product via conveyor

system. At Scepter this process is mass production, on average a fuel canister was
being produced every 5 seconds. This responsibility in designing a system with
product flow in mind and how to design a layout that improves efficiency. To improve
efficiency first one must know how efficient the current design/ layout is. Mr. Estep
had my do time studies and draw a spaghetti chart. This then shows the weak
spots in the layout I which needs to be then placed on a list for things to fix in the
next design. The next internship I had was for Ferra Aerospace. Ferra has an
assembly process, where more craftsmanship is required. My responsibility was to
develop floor layouts for a new building they built. A little different approach had to
be taken to this responsibility because of the different style of work being done on
the product. The main difference was the product would only move from receiving to
assembly to quality to shipping, assembly was all done in one station.
Although I have had two different internships which gave me experience in
two styles of production processes, one important aspect/ skill has become more
and more clear, employee/ floor worker and engineer communication. The majority
of the projects I have worked on it is making changes to production floor or process,
which is then in turn changing the way an employee completes his/ her job. I have
found it is important to talk to the employee on the existing process/ layout, what
they like about it and what they would change. This discussion might bring to light
new problems, that a person that hasnt been working in this area, might not have
discovered. Also presenting possible new ideas for change of the process to the
employee might uncover design flaws, further helping design future plans. Although
these suggestions given from the employee must be further looked into because not
all ideas should bring drastic changes to the plan. Although an engineer is tasked
with improving the flow of a work space, the true expert of the process is the
person in that position every day. An engineer needs to know this to truly make a
workplace more efficient for the company and the man/ woman that works in that
process.
Through these internships I have used different software to reach a desired
result in my responsibilities. The software I mainly used at Scepter was AutoCAD, 2D
sketching software. I used this software to design new layouts for a section of
conveyors to be instant. I also used Excel to develop an algorithm to estimate the
amount of direct labors needed work the production lines dependent of the number
of machines running in a particular shift. This algorithm was based on time studies
that was performed on the direct labor employees were preforming on the product
flow (how long it took to do each task). At Ferra, I used AutoCAD again for
developing floor plans for the new building. I also used to excel to develop a realtime Quick Action inventory sheet that connected the employees directly to the
Inventory coordinator. This helped the coordinator see when curtain parts where
running low before the part bin was empty. This in turn helped decrease shut down
time because of a missing part.
Through some experience within industry I have found that I want to work in
come kind of developing/ continuous improvement engineering position. I have
developed in love for working alongside other engineers and employees to further
improve the process which are peoples lives.
