Affordable Care Act to See

Drastic Rate Increases

werent surprised to find
a letter from Molina, their
health insurance provider,
two weeks ago. Molina
sends out letters to inform
customers of changes and
news on a regular basis.
What surprised the
Morgans (names changed
to protect privacy) was
the staggering increase in
their monthly premiums
starting January, 2017.
I thought there must be a
mistake, said Dana, the
first one to read the letter.
But her husband John
confirmed that it was no
mistake. The Morgans
are facing a rate increase
from $395 a month to a

staggering $782.
When asked what they

plan to do the answer
came bitterly, Well, well
be shopping for new insurance. We could
barely afford the price
before, said John.
While their rate increase
is higher than the average
22%that Utah is facing,
they might not be able to
find an affordable insurance in the Gold category
this year. But there may
be hope for them yet.
According to Josh
Earnest, the Whitehouse
Press Secretary,

options are available to

to indicate that you may
be able to purchase a
planat a comparable
benefit level that costs
less than what you paid
in 2016.
This year the Obama administration is seeking

to give additional tax
credits to young adults
who choose a Silver plan
on the Marketplace.
While the Affordable Care
Act has seen a boon of enrollments of people previously unable to purchase
health insurancepeople

with pre-existing conditions, sicknesses

young adults have been
slower than expected
in enrolling in a health
insurance plan through
the marketplace.
Even though there is
optimism coming from
the Whitehouse, some
Republican lawmakers are
declaring the Affordable

Care Act to be a failure.
Orin Hatch, R-UT, stated
that:
While the Presidents

will try to spin the numbers, families across
the country will be
forced to figure out how

to pay for such unaffordable insurance. That

Obamacare has failed to
control costs comes
as little surprise for
those who have long
warned of such results,
and does little to dispel
the notion we are seeing
the law implode at the
expense of middle class
families.

Hatch has cosponsored a

bill with fellow Republicans Fred Upton (R-MI)
and Richard Burr (R-NC)
to replace the Affordable
Care Act with an act that
would remove the Federal
Government from the
process while making
healthcare affordable for
patients.
Their planwould focus on
reigning in frivolous
lawsuits against practitioners, adding consumer
protections, and allowing
people to purchase insurance across state lines
among other things.
While the Presidential
nominee, Donald Trump,
is declaring the Affordable Care Act a total loss
the Clinton campaign is
standing firm behind the
healthcare law.
Julie Wood, a spokeswoman for Hillary Clinton, said in a statement

that:
Hillary Clinton wants
to build on the progress
weve made and fix
whats broken.
Clinton has laid out
a thorough plan for
strengthening the law
without doing away
with it entirely. She has
proposed reforms that
would bring down the
out-of-pocket costs like
copays and deductibles,
reduce prescriptionprices,
and expand Medicare to
include people as young
as 55, and several other
changes as listed on her
campaign website.
Most lawmakers havent
come to a consensus on
what the country needs to
do, but many agree that
something needs to be
done. For John and Dana
Morgan, that change cant
come soon enough.
